    Raiders file grievance against Russell

that pile of dung should be arrested and charged with theft !!!

The Oakland Raiders have filed a grievance seeking nearly $10 million back from recently released quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Yahoo! Sports first reported the story Thursday, saying the Raiders are seeking $9.55 million from Russell in what was paid as salary advances for the 2010-12 seasons. The team later confirmed the report.

``We have filed a grievance against JaMarcus Russell and that's all we're going to say at this time,'' Raiders general counsel Jeff Birren said in a statement.

Russell was released earlier this month after three disappointing seasons with the team. He had been paid about $36.4 million through last season and was still owed $3 million at the time of his release.

Russell's agent, Eric Metz, did not immediately return an e-mail seeking a comment. He earlier told Yahoo that: ``The money in question was fully guaranteed. That is why JaMarcus was forced to hold out and miss all of training camp as a rookie. The Raiders know that and this is our only comment.''

After being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, Russell's career in Oakland got off to a rocky start. He did not sign a contract until after the first regular season game of his rookie year in 2007 as the two sides haggled over the language of guaranteed money, among other issues.

He started just one game as a rookie before showing some signs of progress in his second season. He regressed last year as he was fined for being overweight and criticized by the coaching staff for his work ethic.

He ultimately lost his starting job midway through last season as his passer rating of 50.0 was the lowest in the NFL since 1998. Owner Al Davis finally decided to cut ties three weeks ago with the player he once believed would be his franchise quarterback.

Russell won only seven of his 25 starts in his career with Oakland. He completed just 52.1 percent of his passes in his career with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

Russell has not yet signed with another team.

There is nothing more satisfying than reading about the idiocy of the Raiders... unless its the idiocy of the Browns or Bungles.

This guy has to be one of the biggest busts in the history of the NFL when you combine the money he got, the mess he turned that team into, the mess he made his rookie year holding out and all that gabage combined.

Its one thing to try hard but fail, like leaf did, but this guy, he just took the money and ate burgers for years and did nothing to be a winning qb. This guy didn't even try.

JR can kiss my ***! I hope Al gets some of his money back, but, he has no one to blame but himself. There were many red flags attached to Russell before he was drafted... but, Al only saw the huge arm... too bad he didn't realize it came with a huge, flabby body.

I'm happy the JR experiment is over... and I hope this is the catalyst for a rookie pay scale.

you know, that's a great point, this could be the #1 reason we get a rookie pay scale, no owner wants to be burned like that ever again.

Wait a second... are you saying that Al Davis may have done something GOOD for the league in the last 30 years?

Was it Brown that caught the Neil O'donnel interceptions in the Super Bowl ? Davis threw a ton of money at him too when he signed him as a Raider and the thing is, he was just an average corner that Neil threw right to.
I wonder if davis signed him for being a corner or for not allowing the Steelers to win another Super Bowl ?

Re: Raiders file grievance against Russell

Lets say that no rookie salary cap is put in place in the next CBA. I have a question about the draft and a what if scenario.

It's clear that having one of the first ten picks in any draft is going to cost the team some scratch to sign the player they pick. The first pick this year was guaranteed 50 mil (I think), the second something like 36mil, etc.

Because of the contract that is required to sign these players it is becoming or has become a rather poor draft position and it's almost impossible to trade the pick to someone. So, here's my question:

What happens if the team with the first pick simply doesn't make a selection during their time on the clock? The team at 1.2 goes on the clock and makes a selection, then 1.3 does the same, etc until the team at 1.11 makes their selection (which is the tenth overall). Can the team at 1.1 then run to the podium and put a selection in? Or, if they pass do they not get to make a pick in the first round?

These early picks can become financial nightmares, Russell, Leinhart (to a degree), et al. If you can pass and then select when you feel like it, you would be drafting 1.11 talent or later and wouldn't have to commit so much cash to a rookie.
