Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat transcript: 5.25.2010

    Tuesday, May 25, 2010
    Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Ed Bouchette: Good afternoon. Let's begin

Chuck_Lorre_2.5men: Ed: will Patrick Bailey make the team?

Ed Bouchette: He will have a tougher time this year because of the two OLBs they drafted, the return of Larry Foote and the ILB they drafted. The numbers start adding up and squeezing guys.

screenwriter: Ed, Are there any discussions among NFL owners today about the CBA?

Ed Bouchette: The owners are in Dallas, including Art Rooney, and I am in Pittsburgh. I'm sure they had some discussions on the side but this is a one-day NFL meeting and not the place for CBA talks to go on.

Chuck_Lorre_2.5men: Ed: NFL drug policy is random. can a player be tested mulitple times during the season or there's a maximum number. ACLU...not withstanding?

Ed Bouchette: The drug policy, as opposed to the performance-enhancing policy, differs. You are not tested randomly unless you get into the "system" by giving a positive test during physicals

Amos_P_Swanson: Tomlin sounded a little peeved when asked about Troy missing from OTA's last week. What do you think? ... And have you heard how that knee is doing?

Ed Bouchette: His injured knee was fine at minicamp, when he practiced with his teammates. Polamalu missed OTAs in 2008, too, so he could train in SoCal. He made the Pro Bowl and his team won the Super Bowl that season.

screenwriter: Ed, How serious will northern cities push for Super Bowls in their town after NJ/NY gets theirs? Will the Rooneys push for a Bowl in the 'Burgh?

Ed Bouchette: I made the case for Pittsburgh in PG Plus today. I think many will push, including Washington and New England.

McCarty: Imagine if you will, the Pirates become buyers in July or in the offseason for a SS. What is the best case scenario (by either trade or FA signing)?

Ed Bouchette: Sir, are you related to the Bucs' second baseman because you wondered into the wrong area again.

Polamalu43: Ed, any changes to the first team offense or defense this week?

Ed Bouchette: None. Aaron Smith and James Harrison were missing, though.

flatland-steeler: can you give us your take on a scale of 1-10 how close the Steelers came trading Ben ?( and as a follow up R those allowed here?) Has the decision been made to keep Ben no matter what barring another sex-related episode ?

Ed Bouchette: There was never any serious trade talk, despite what you might hear elsewhere. yes, their intent is to keep him.

DiamondSteel: Why is it so hard for Goodell to say yes or no on Ben practicing. Doesn't seem like it should take this long for an answer.

Ed Bouchette: Maybe they're still analyzing his evaluation, or maybe they just want him to stew a bit.

flatland-steeler: Do you ever think about making these chat "video" enabled ?

Ed Bouchette: Would I then have to wear a shirt?

DCSTEEL: Any rookies standing out during OTA drills?

Ed Bouchette: I like the looks of Jonathan Dwyer, but remember, no one touches him. He has a burst and cut and enthusiasm.

Chooch79: Did the American Needle decision yesterday change your opinion on a new CBA being struck?

Ed Bouchette: No, and if you read any of the quotes by NFL super attorney Jeff Pash you'll understand why. They are in this for the long haul.

dawson63: Ed what are the chances Dermontti Dawson and Donnie Shell for the HOF?

Ed Bouchette: Dawson has an excellent chance. I think Shell's time has passed.

Chooch79: Do you envision that Tomlin will have a much more difficult training camp versus last year's walk in the park?

Ed Bouchette: I have news for you. Most teams' training camps are not nearly as tough as they used to be. The players get there in shape and have all these spring practices under their belts. And if Tomlin's camp was so soft last summer, i would follow the same path because the Steelers got off to a 6-2 start.

Dave V. from Swissvale: Do you ever think we'll see the day when a woman (kicker perhaps) makes an NFL roster?

Ed Bouchette: No. I think you'll see a woman throw underhand in MLB before that.

Steelershoss: What are the reason's that Logan doesn;t get a fair chance on this team? He reminds of a darren sproles

Ed Bouchette: I think Stefan Logan might get a chance to show what he can do at RB in the preseason.

Dave: ESPN reported last night that Goodell will give an "update" on the Roethlisberger situation. Can you venture a guess what that "update" might be?

Ed Bouchette: No. Maybe he'll outline a timetable for his return.

Chooch79: If I leave my wallet at Heinz field, what is the proper protocol to get it back?

Ed Bouchette: Get a man purse.

Jon: Ed, is trying to break into Heinz field one of the more idiotic things someone could do?

Ed Bouchette: When we were kids, we'd try to sneak in DURING games, not in the middle of May unless it was baseball.

The Ghost of John Jenkins: Any possibility Gay wins the job from Mcfadden in camp or preseason? I'm convinced last year was an abberation

Ed Bouchette: For Gay or McFadden? Gay is running with the second team on the right side, behind Ike Taylor. Keenan Lewis is running with the second team on the left side, behind McFadden.

diesel99: Does Keisel look healed from last years late season injury?

    Ed Bouchette: Yes.

Chuck: What ever happened to A.Q. Shipley? I was thinking he spent some time on the practice squad? Is he out of football?

Ed Bouchette: He signed with the Eagles after the season.

Mike Fury: Coach Tomlin recently said he intends to remove Jeff Reed from kick-off duties. DO you think the Steelers cut Dan Sepulveda and keep punter Adam Graeselle who can also kick-off? They can't keep 3 kickers right??

Ed Bouchette: Maybe I missed that big news, but that's the first time I've heard it. Having said that, Graeselle is getting a lot of kickoff duty this spring.

Ed Bouchette: Thanks, all. See you next week.

In my mind, Sep is gold in the bank, worth a few points a game based on field position. Yes, we can do better than Reed's best last year on kickoffs. But get rid of Sep? It would be hard for me to feel good about that ...

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

That's just some idiot spouting off. If Ed hasn't heard it then there's nothing to it. The Steelers aren't going to cut Sepulveda.

    I liked this part though:
