Everybody Else is Doing it...just not as well as Chadman..

This time around, Chadman is going to try to put together a mock that factors in trades, needs, the current roster & reported players of interest for the Steelers. Let's see how we go..

Current Roster-

QB- Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch & Dennis Dixon.
Need- Zero. Let's face it, these 3 will be the 3 going into the next season. Unless Leftwich is released, or Ben is in real trouble.

RB- Mendenhall, Moore, Redman, Vincent, Summers, Davis.
Need- A #2 RB is needed, maybe a FB. Redman, Vincent & Davis are unlikely to make it out of camp. Summers is on the bubble.

WR- Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Randle El, Battle, Sweed, Grisham, Chery
Need- Zero...unless the Steelers want a future #1 for Ward. Instead of adding WR's, the Steelers will need to remove some..Grisham, Chery & Sweed look like cuts at this point.

TE- Miller, Speath, Johnson, McHugh, Bright
Need- Zero. Miller, Speath & Johnson will be the 3 TE's going into next season. Johnson might take away the need for a FB.

OL- Starks, Kemoeatu, Hartwig, Essex, Colon, Hills, Foster, Legursky, Urbik, Scott
Need- Upgrades. Plenty of bodies, just not many good ones. OT? Perhaps. OG & OC are more pressing needs. How good is Urbik??????? Could be the wildcard in regards to draft need.

DL- Hampton, Smith, Keisel, Hood, Harris, Hoke, McLendon, Eason, Kirschke
Need- Future starters. Hampton & Hoke are old. Smith is old. Youth is required for depth right away. Kirschke &/or Eason could be gone after camp. McLendon is a long shot.

LB- Harrison, Woodley, Timmons, Farrior, Foote, Fox, Bailey, Doggett, Williams, Frazier
Need- Depth/Youth. Harrison & Farrior are getting older- Farrior could be in his last year. Foote is likely to replace Farrior, but he'll be 30. Fox has never proven to be a starter. Little to no depth at OLB. How long will Harrison be dominant for?

CB- Taylor, Gay, Burnett, Lewis, Madison
Need- Definate. How good are Gay, Burnett & Lewis? Can the Steelers afford to give them time to find out? Look for a starter type CB to be added, possibly early.

Safety- Polamalu, Clark, Allen, Mundy
Need- Re-signing Clark takes away a desperate need. Certainly could look to add a Safety in this draft.

MIKE IUPATI OG IDAHO 6'5" 331LBS 5.24 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1I9VDf1 ... re=related

Ok, so a bunch of you don't like him here, but he is a good fit. Adds an improvement to the skill set to possibly the weakest point on the team, could compete to start right away, improves the run blocking on a team that has already said it wants to run better. Not a sexy pick, but a good, smart one.

Pass blocking: Good initial quickness off the snap. Provides a significant jolt to the defender with his punch. Too high in his pass protection but has the strong hands to latch on to the defender and ride him throughout the play. Good balance and lateral agility to slide with the defender and remain square. Can get himself in trouble with leverage by playing too high. Long arms and great lower strength to lock out. Rarely takes a step back even against a powerful bull rush, but this could be an area of concern against NFL defensive linemen, especially when Iupati fails to move his feet. Has developed into a savvy blocker. Looks to help out his teammates when not covered. Wants to hit someone.

Run Blocking: Can dominate as a run blocker due to his mass and rare upper-body strength. Provides an explosive initial pop that often knocks the defender back. Has to do a better job of latching on, as he'll knock his opponent back only to see him regroup and get back into the play. Very good drive blocker when he plays with leverage and keeps his hands inside. Can physically remove the defender from the hole. Looks to eliminate more than one defender on the play and will release to the second level. Good effort downfield.

Pulling/trapping: Surprisingly agile in getting out and blocking at the second level. Good body control and straight-line speed for a player of his size. Can re-adjust in space to hit the linebacker. Fails to lock onto the defender, at times, preferring to violently shove his target to the ground and look for others.

Initial Quickness: Good initial quickness off the snap in pass protection. Even on the rare occasions when beaten off the snap, his long arms and wide-body make it difficult for defenders (including blitzing linebackers) to sneak through his gap. When beaten by quicker defensive tackles in the running game, has the agility and long arms to catch them as they slide by, typically knocking them down and pancaking them.

Downfield: Intimidating presence on the move. Good athleticism and balance for a man his size and can redirect to make the effective block when he gets close. Will misjudge angles at times, and miss his intended target. When he does so, rather than turn to stand helplessly around the pile, he moves on to the next target. Good effort to block downfield.

Intangibles: Made significant progress over the past two seasons and appears to be just scratching the surface of his potential. Size and athleticism combination enough that some will view him as a better offensive tackle or even defensive tackle prospect. Born in American Samoa and moved to the United States at 14. Began learning English (and football) at that time. Has only played football since high school. Signed with Idaho after bigger programs had concerns about his ability to qualify academically. Voted team captain by his peers for 2009.

BRANDON GHEE CB WAKE FOREST 6'0" 192LBS 4.37 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caoFYBPKZVA

A big, strong, CB that can't catch very well. Sound familiar? Great run defender, good hitter. Solid all around CB prospect. Has the size LeBeau likes in his CB's. Steelers have looked at 3 CB's that fit this mould- Ghee, Cook & Nolan Carroll from Maryland. Ghee is the best of that group.

Read & React: Marginal read-and-react skills. Aggressive making plays on the ball, but too often doesn't make the play when it appears he should. Better hitter than pass defender to this point.

Man Coverage: Looks the part and has good straight-line speed. Good agility and balance in coverage. Can flip his hips and run with receivers, though his long legs are not conducive to his breaking quickly and truly mirroring receivers. Has the speed to recover, but can be beaten by sharp routes. Not yet the sum of his parts. Faster than he is quick and will give up too much cushion, too often allowing the reception rather than going for the pass breakup.

Zone Coverage: Has the IQ, speed and reliable tackling ability to be a fine zone coverage defender. Too late reacting to the play. Prefers to go for the big hit rather than making an attempt on the ball for the interception. Physical defender who is aggressive in his hand punch at the line of scrimmage and isn't afraid to battle with receivers throughout the route.

Closing/Recovery: Good lateral agility and has an explosive burst to close when needed. Competes as the ball arrives and has the long arms and quick hands to knock passes away before a receiver can secure it. Times his leaps well to compete against bigger receivers. True defensive back hands but has only one interception in 34 starts (25 passes broken up).

Run Support: Aggressive in run support. Quickly gets through receiver blocks and is willing to stick his head into the action with the big boys on his way to the runner. Good open-field hitter who flashes heavy-hitting ability.

Tackling: Big hitter who times his hits well. Lowers his shoulder into the ballcarrier and can jar the ball loose. Can improve wrapping up as a tackler, as NFL receivers will be better able to absorb hits and keep their feet.

Intangibles: Struggled amid high expectations as a senior. Missed the 2007 season serving an academic suspension. Missed the 2009 spring practice after suffering a sprained knee on the first day. Missed two games in '09 due to a sprained ankle.

so according to your analysis, we could use the following:

RB, OC, OG, OT, NT, DE, ILB, OLB, CB and S...that makes ten positions of need and we have ten draft choices this year. as a result, i would not be in favor of giving up any of our picks to move up unless we really, really LOVE a player who has dropped.
Steel Maniac's Time-Based Prediction: Lamar Jackson will be a bust and total flop in the NFL.

What Actually Happened: Lamar Jackson became the youngest two-time NFL MVP winner ever.

ROUND 3
#69- Traded #82 & #116 (3rd & 4th Round picks) to Oakland

JASON WORILDS OLB VIRGINIA TECH 6'1" 254LBS 4.65 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-63jx7QgZE8

In all honesty- not Chadman's favourite player. V Tech has a habit of producing these DE/OLB hybrids that don't pan out. But the Steelers like him. Big & athletic, fast. Could he be a dominant pass rusher given the right coaching? Runs himself out of plays too often- but that could be coached out.

Pass rush: His specialty. Gets a good jump off the snap and is fast enough to blow past the offensive tackle to force the quarterback to step up into the pocket. Good use of hands. Quick, active hands to slap away the initial punch and shows a variety of pass rush techniques, including a swim, rip, spin and surprisingly effective club. Stronger than he looks. Good hand placement and overall strength for the occasional bull rush. Good bend to get out and under the tackle's reach. Shows a burst to close when opportunities present themselves. Good secondary moves when his initial rush attempt is handled.

Run defense: Good strength, but simply lacks the bulk to hold up at the point of attack consistently. Many of his tackles in the running game come 2-3 yards off the line, as he's active enough to fight off blocks and make the play -- but only after being pushed back initially when plays are run directly at him. Good agility to beat the tackle/tight end outside in an attempt at keeping contain. Good effort to string the play out wide. Good effort in pursuit.

Explosion: Has an explosive first step off the snap to consistently pressure the tackle's outside shoulder. Is stronger than he looks and can surprise much bigger blockers with an explosive pop as a bull-rusher. Brings his hips as a tackler and supplies a pop to the ball-carrier.

Strength: Has a natural leverage advantage and plays with good overall strength, especially in his upper body. Has the strength to surprise as a bull rusher, but is too often pushed back, himself, while trying to anchor.

Tackling: Appears to have the body control to consider making the transition to outside linebacker. Bends at the knees to break down and make the tackle on the edge against elusive athletes. Generally is a solid wrap-up tackler. Brings his hips to deliver a solid blow. Can knock the ball free. Has 3 forced fumbles in two starting seasons …

Intangibles: High effort player. Saw action on multiple special teams units throughout his career, including punt return/block team and the extra point and field goal block unit. A hard worker in the weight room. Earned the Excalibur Award during the 2008 offseason, the top honor in the strength and conditioning program. Last name is pronounced "Worlds."

JEFF OWENS NT GEORGIA 6'1 304LBS 4.97 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C2DhM-vadc

Steelers will need some depth & youth at NT, with both Hampton & Hoke over 32 years old. Owens is a powder-keg type widebody that can get good leverage to combat OC's & OG's. Steelers have a habit of picking Georgia Bulldogs..

Pass rush: Pass-rush technique is still developing. Has marginal burst off the snap and good effort to push the pocket, but lacks the lateral agility or closing speed to threaten the passer on a consistent basis. Flashes the initial quickness to pressure the quarterback, but doesn't re-direct well and is only a marginal athlete.

Run defense: Short and wide-bodied in the middle. Marginal initial quickness off the snap. Good team defender who understands his role to control a gap. Violent hands to control the action, but doesn't have the athleticism to chase down ballcarriers. Can hold up at the point of attack -- even the flashes the ability to beat the double-team -- but too often loses the leverage battle. Good effort in pursuit when he's fresh, but was in a deep rotation and ran short of energy quickly.

Explosion: Only marginal initial burst off the snap, but shows explosive upper-body strength to knock offensive linemen into the pocket. Only adequate lateral agility or straight-line speed in pursuit. Flashes some pop as a hitter, but is too inconsistent in this area.

Strength: Excellent natural upper-body strength. Boasts a 535-pound bench press. Good strength to hold up at the point, despite regular double-team blocking. When he plays with good pad level, his lower-body strength is enough to anchor against the double-team.

Tackling: Is a strong drag-down tackler with the strength to slip off blocks and catch backs as they run past. Flashes some explosiveness as a hitter when given space to gain momentum.

Intangibles: Team leader and representative for Georgia at the preseason SEC Media Day. One of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. Missed all but the first game of the 2008 season due to a torn ACL.

CHARLES SCOTT RB LSU 6'0" 238LBS 4.68 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROrIY31e7yE

Powerful runner. Runs HARD all the time. Big, fast enough. One cut (if any cut) type RB. Will be perfect for those short yardage situations, or when you want to pound..and pound...and pound...to tire out the Defense.

Inside: Big, strong back with good feet for his size. Will hit a hole at full speed out of the I-formation, but also excels on draw plays. Patient to follow the fullback, get skinny through creases and come out the other side ready to bowl over safeties and linebackers. Uses his hands to direct traffic inside, and has the vision to work his way through. Tough for one defender to bring down when he's past the line driving his legs. Strong goal-line runner. Not particularly elusive behind the line, and doesn't sidestep penetrating defenders.

Outside: Runaway freight train in the open field, but does not have the speed most teams prefer in a bell-cow back. Doesn't always see or take advantage of space outside. Lacks the speed to consistently make the corner. Best as a north-south runner, but will make safeties miss one-on-one with a surprisingly quick cutback or stop-and-start move. Keeps four points of pressure or two hands on the ball when contact comes. Switches the ball to the outside hand once out of traffic.

Breaking tackles: Runs with a good lean and lowers his pads to knock over smaller defenders at the second level. Piles up yards after initial contact by running through arm tackles and keeping his feet moving after bouncing off players in traffic. Almost always leans forward for an additional yard or two before going down. Uses his length to stiff-arm closing defenders.

Blocking: Has the size to be effective in pass protection - and likes to be physical - but needs a lot of work in technique. Throws a shoulder into defenders if coming up to help the line, instead of trying to mirror and sustain. Misses blitzers coming off the edge, letting his quarterback take a big shot.

Receiving: Didn't get many opportunities in LSU's offense, but is a tough matchup for cornerbacks to bring down on swing passes. Best catching the ball going upfield. Will make himself available for the quarterback if he's scrambling. Allows throws over the middle to hit his chest. Can elude most linebackers on inside screens and arrow routes, but must make crisper cuts at the next level.

Intangibles: Team player and a tough competitor whether in the weight room, on the practice field or playing in front of the raucous Saturday night Death Valley crowd. Will have to prove that his fractured clavicle is fully healed at the Combine.

D'ANTHONY SMITH DE LOUISIANA TECH 6'2" 304LBS 5.02 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUX6m6ceIAg

Steelers committed themselves to getting younger on the DL last season. Adding another DE to the mix here completes the transformation. Steelers have interviewed Smith.

Pass rush: Good initial quickness to pressure the pocket, but lacks a variety of pass-rush moves and relies predominately on his bull rush. Showed an improved swim move as a senior. Cerebral defender who keeps his head on a swivel and reacts well to the screen and draw plays. Keeps his eyes on the quarterback and does a nice job of getting his hands up in the air to deflect passes when he can't get pressure.

Run defense: Short, stumpy defender who plays with good pad level and leg drive to hold up in the running game. Active feet and good lateral agility to slide down the line and make the tackle at or near the line of scrimmage.

Explosion: Good initial quickness off the snap. Flashes the burst to attack gaps and collapse the pocket from the interior. Violent hands to disengage from blocks. Flashes some pop as a tackler. Will leap at the ballcarrier and knock them violently into the ground.

Strength: Good leg drive and use of leverage for the bull rush. Good upper-body strength to violently rip away from blocks.

Tackling: Recognizes the cutback and has the flexibility and balance to protect his knees by sprawling and pushing off his hands to get past the blocker. Good strength to slide off blocks and make the tackle as backs run by. Shows some lateral agility and balance to break down in close quarters.

Intangibles: Remains a work in progress. Has been able to get by with just his size and athletic ability at this level. Doesn't play with the nastiness you'd expect from a defensive tackle. Might lack the intensity and self motivation to maximize his talent. Experienced in the 4-3 (under-tackle) and as the nose in a three-man front when the Bulldogs went to nickel. Durable. Started 44 consecutive games to finish his career. Ascending talent with upside worthy of development.

BARRY CHURCH SS TOLEDO 6'2" 222LBS 4.69 40-Yard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlflk_qH ... re=related

Steelers kicked his tyres at the Toledo Pro Day. Big, strong SS. Could give solid depth/competition to Ryan Mundy & Will Allen. Worth a try here.

Read & React: Among his better areas. Reads the play and is efficient in closing to the line of scrimmage against the run or playing back in coverage. Toledo coaching staff moved up closer to the line of scrimmage because of his rare instincts.

Man Coverage: An area of concern. Too stiff in the hips and too slow to drop down to cover slot receivers in the NFL. Lacks the range to cover sideline to sideline as a free safety. Good use of hands to re-route the tight end and has better quickness than you'd expect because of his instincts.

Zone Coverage: An effective zone coverage defender due to his good diagnostic skills and effective but to close. Heady defender that keeps his eyes on the quarterback. Has a sense of the action around him. Good burst to close on underneath routes. A reliable open-field tackler.

Closing/Recovery: Doesn't possess great straight-line speed to recover or the agility to turn and run with NFL-caliber receivers, but makes up for it with instincts and a sudden burst to close. Competes for the ball, showing better timing and long arms than true explosiveness in his vertical. Though he has nine career interceptions, is inconsistent in catching passes. Dropped too many interceptions.

Run Support: Among his best assets. Has good size and valuable experience playing at the line of scrimmage. Whether lining up deep or near the line, is comfortable sorting through trash. Protects his legs well from the cut block and isn't afraid to get mixed up with tight ends and even offensive linemen. Tracks the ball well and takes good angles in pursuit. Reliable open-field tackler that can bring the wood as a hitter.

Tackling: Doesn't possess the speed most teams want in their last line of defense, but ranks among the position's better, more secure open-field tacklers. Keeps eyes up and remains balanced when making contact with the ballcarrier, driving through with his hips to consistently stop the offensive player in his tracks. Isn't a truly explosive hitter, but generates good momentum and has the size and strength to make impressive, physical stops.

Intangibles: Good student who is well-liked by fans, coaches and players alike. Directs the team on the field and showed great durability by starting every game for four years.

Certainly could look to add a Safety in this draft.

so according to your analysis, we could use the following:

RB, OC, OG, OT, NT, DE, ILB, OLB, CB and S...that makes ten positions of need and we have ten draft choices this year. as a result, i would not be in favor of giving up any of our picks to move up unless we really, really LOVE a player who has dropped.

You can't fill every need in one draft. Besides, after this season, there will be new needs...it's ever evolving. The key is to minimise your weaknesses while improving every season. If the Steelers can get 3 starters & 4 back-ups out of this draft, they've done well. That isn't to say 3 starters in 2010- 3 starters down the track.
The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

Light up the darkness.

2024 Draft
1. Kool-Aid McKinstry CB
2. Sedrick Van Pran-Grainger OC
3. Malachi Corley WR
3. Maason Smith DT
4. Matt Goncalves OT
6. Trevin Wallace ILB
7. AJ Barner TE
