When you look for an ILB for a 3-4, there are a couple of ways you can find the guy you want. You can grab the physical specimen, the athletic freak that can completely blow away opponants with speed & power- you know, Lawrence Timmons/ Patrick Willis types. OR...you take the smart, savvy guy that knows his assignment, knows where to be & when- your James Farrior's.

    Or your Sean Lee's.

This guy is good, make no mistake. He's Paul Posluszny without the 1st round grade. Great character, good career record.

Read & React: Excellent football intelligence. Rarely blows an assignment. Reads his keys almost instantly and runs to the ball with no wasted motion. Shows controlled aggression against play-action. Quickly diagnoses screens and misdirection.

Run defense: Time away from the field allowed him to increase his upper- body strength. Relies on quick hands and feet to disengage from blocks, and is not afraid of taking on linemen in the hole. Still struggles to release when effectively tied up. Flows through the traffic efficiently. Good lateral agility and balance to protect his legs. Good straight-line speed in pursuit, especially for the inside linebacker position. High effort player who takes good angles in pursuit. Has the speed to meet ballcarriers on the edge at the college level but will not get to the outside against most NFL backs.

Pass defense: Understands routes and has enough straight-line speed to stay with most running backs and tight ends. High backpedal, but has improved his drop to get deep enough to prevent first downs. Can change direction when running downhill smoothly, but doesn't flip his hips quickly. Very good key-and-diagnose skills and a good burst to close, but is clearly more comfortable moving forward to the line of scrimmage than in reverse. Has trouble recovering in the few instances in which he bites on play action.

Tackling: One of Lee's greatest assets. Fundamentally sound wrap-up tackler who could provide the animated examples for hit-lift-drive. Plays on the balls of his feet and has the body control to break down in space and tackle smaller, shiftier ballcarriers. Long arms and accurate hands to trip up the ballcarrier. Could develop more explosiveness as a hitter. Reliable open-field tackler, but not an intimidator.

Pass Rush/Blitz: Often asked to blitz in this scheme as a stand-up rusher. Good initial burst from the outside to get past the tackle. Needs to improve his explosiveness to quickly disengage from blockers. Shows some lower-body strength and use of leverage for the bull rush, but could improve in this area. Only marginal use of pass-rush technique -- relies on his good lateral agility and straight-line speed to elude. Good closing speed on the quarterback and has the body control to re-direct. Times his blitzes effectively with the snap count.

Intangibles: Unquestioned leader of the defense despite missing the 2008 season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Traveled with the team as a coach on the sideline and during practice. Held out of spring practices and returned this fall after nearly 15 months away from football. Blue-collar work ethic. Highly competitive. Brother was a placekicker for the University of Pittsburgh.

    NFL Comparison: Dan Connor, Panthers
Much better I like your rounds 2-4 very much. Put Odrick in Rd 1 and you would be a genius.

    ROUND 5A.

    COREY PETERS DE KENTUCKY 6'3" 300lbs, 34" arms, 9" hands, 4.90 40 yard

Last season the Steelers added Ziggy Hood & Ra'Shon Harris to the DL to get younger, this season Linval Joseph & now Corey Peters complete the transition from old to young. Experienced, 4 year starter. Good upfield moves. A little under rated, but perhaps has a limited upside. But in Round 5, a guy like Peters can be used as a situational guy & still be good value.

Pass rush: Relies on his initial burst off the snap and good closing speed to pressure the pocket. Too often resorts to a simple bull rush when his initial quickness is contained. Shows minimal pass-rush technique but he continues fighting inside. Has enough size and athleticism to warrant development in this area, but is raw.

Run defense: Good initial burst to create a disruption inside. Locates the ball and works to get to it. Comes off the snap too high, negating his own strength. Moves well laterally and keeps his feet when moving backward. Strong and active enough to slide off blocks and meet the ballcarrier in the hole. Good pursuit laterally and downfield for a player of his size.

Explosion: Flashes an explosive burst off the snap with an initial surge to knock the guard backward to disrupt the play before it even has a chance to begin. Needs to show greater strength and use of leverage when fighting blocks. Lack of explosive strength is evident in his tackling.

Strength: Stands too upright out of his stance, negating his own strength and too often being knocked back in short-yardage situations. Improving upper-body strength to stack and control his opponent. Can slide off the block to make the tackle at or near the line of scrimmage.

Tackling: Makes most of his tackles at or a few yards past the line of scrimmage by slipping of blocks and dragging down the ballcarrier. Lacks explosiveness as a hitter. Shows a good burst to close when he is given a free lane and hustles laterally and downfield in pursuit. Shows some agility and good balance when on the move and can trip up smaller, more elusive ball-carriers due to his long arms.

Intangibles: Took his academics seriously. Earned recognition as a National Scholar-Athlete in high school and made the SEC Academic Honor-Roll after the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Earned his secondary social-studies degree in December of 2009. Steadily improved on the field throughout his career. Earned Most-Improved Defender award, as voted by the UK coaching staff, after the 2007 season. Voted UK's Most Outstanding Defensive Player after the 2009 regular seasons. Also recognized with the Jerry Claiborne Award, presented to an offensive and defensive senior based on academic success and a team attitude.

Re: Everybody Else is Doing it Part 3....

    ROUND 5B.

    LONYAE MILLER RB FRESNO ST 5'11" 221lbs, 30 3/4" arms, 8 7/8" hands, 4.49 40 yard

Ryan Matthews back-up got only limited opportunities in college, but he has the skill set to be a player. Big & powerful, tough runner with a burst. As Rashard Mendenhall's back-up, could be ideal. Very little tread on the tyres.

Inside: Has the size to be effective inside, but too often dances behind the line of scrimmage to find an opportunity for a big play rather than fight for positive yardage. Good burst through the hole when it is there and can gain yardage in chunks. Good eyes for the cutback, as well as the burst to take advantage. Wraps both arms around the ball securely in tight quarters, but has an upright running style that lends to big hits. Only marginal production in short-yardage situations.

Outside: Patient runner who will allow the hole to open and has the burst to attack when it is there. Good lateral agility to shake the defender in tight quarters and can accelerate off either foot. Good speed to beat the linebacker to the flank and can turn upfield. Good straight-line speed, with a legitimate second gear to pull away when in the open field.

Breaking tackles: Doesn't possess the power runner his size would indicate. Keeps his feet moving, but is only marginally effective at breaking tackles due to his upright running style and only marginal strength, overall. Relies more on his changing of speeds and head fakes to make defenders miss, rather than power and determination to run through their tackles.

Blocking: Squares to the pass rusher in pass protection and provides an initial pop, but lacks the strength or the determination to sustain. Willing downfield blocker who keeps his head on a swivel.

Receiving: Rarely was asked to do anything more than catch swing or screen passes out of the backfield. Has the natural athleticism to warrant development in this area, as he seems comfortable tracking and securing the ball. Has limited experience as a kick returner.

Intangibles: Some upside here as he has a rare combination of size and straight-line speed and has a great deal of tread left on his tires. Quality teammate who handled the demotion behind Ryan Mathews well. Intelligent. Kinesiology major. Has a two year-old son.

Re: Everybody Else is Doing it Part 3....

    ROUND 5C.

    JOHN CONNER FB KENTUCKY 5'11" 241lbs, 32" arms, 8 1/2" hands, 4.71 40 yard

One of Chadman's favourites. Connre is a pure Fullback- a blocker that can catch & run a little bit- much like Alstott, McLain &...John L Williams. Tough, hard nosed player that gives everything, every time. Versatile enough to be used as a single back on occasion. Catches well. Blocks decently without being a "Kreider". This is the sort of 5th rounder that can actually contribute in some form next season. Plays ST too.

Inside: Bullish runner who doesn't waste time looking for the big play. Good lower leg drive and forward body lean to get the tough yards. Runs with good pad level and keeps his feet driving to generate as much yardage as possible. Good ball security. Keeps both arms locked around the ball. Has enough wiggle to surprise the unsuspecting defender and can gain yardage in chunks.

Outside: Typical fullback. Lacks the speed to beat linebackers to the edge and has only marginal agility to elude.

Breaking tackles: Tough back to bring down as he keeps his feet moving and runs with good pad level. Doesn't offer much more than the helmet, shoulder and knees pads for the defender to target. A determined runner who will become a coach and fan favorite due to his second- and third-effort runs.

Blocking: Old-school traditional lead blocker willing to sell out to knock the linebacker out of the hole. Good size, explosiveness and accuracy to clear the way. Athletic enough to adjust in the open field to hit the moving target. Keeps his head on a swivel in pass protection and blocks inside-out. Aggressive in pass protection. Will take on the bigger man and holds up surprisingly well due to his accurate hand placement, use of leverage and determination. Accurate, reliable cut-blocker.

Receiving: Soft, reliable hands. Will allow the ball to get into his pads, but is quick to secure the pass. Shows the ability to extend his arms and pluck the ball out of the air. Appears to have enough athleticism to handle more complicated routes, but was typically used only on short to intermediate dump passes and the occasional screen.

Intangibles: A former walk-on who is well respected by coaches, peers and fans for his physicality, toughness and consistency. Played in a school-record 54 games over his career. Team captain. Also plays extensively on special teams. Nicknamed "The Terminator" by his teammates.

Re: Everybody Else is Doing it Part 3....

    ROUND 6.

    O'BRIEN SCHOLFIELD OLB WISCONSIN 6'2" 221lbs, 32 3/8" arms, 9 1/2" hands, 4.60 40 yard

Hard not to feel sorry for him after he tore his ACL at the Senior Bowl. Bad news for him- good news for the team that gets a bargain as a result. Great pass rusher that will need to convert to OLB due to his size. Might want to add 10lbs or so. Fast, great instincts...worth a shot. Even if you put him on PUP or IR, he's worth the investment.

Read & React: Very good nose for the ball playing near the line or in space. Plays faster than his timed speed indicates because of his football IQ. Aware and reads misdirection on the edge. Gets his hands up to block passes near the line.

Run defense: Takes good angles to the ball and is a reliable tackler in the open. Stands his ground very well against tackles on either side of the line considering he is undersized. Explodes into double teams. Able to punch and disengage to chase down run plays run to his side, but will be engulfed regularly by NFL offensive tackles. Beats cut blocks with his hands, recovers quickly to chase down the ball.

Pass defense: Displays the speed needed to cover tight ends and running backs downfield and in the flat. Attacks plays in front of him, takes good angles and wraps securely. Aware of screens and can take out a running back before quarterback can throw the ball. Better receivers and tight ends will separate from him using their length. Must improve the fluidity in his backpedal and drop to get into position in coverage. Inexperienced recognizing routes and will need to prove he can make the interception.

Tackling: Always hustles to the ball whether the play is on his side or he needs to chase down the line or downfield. Uses his long arms to wrap up securely, can be explosive enough to knock the ball loose. Doesn't have the size or strength to make a lot of arm tackles. Former special teams ace with a future there because of his speed and willingness to throw his body into the fray.

Pass Rush/Blitz: Relentless pass rusher. Often double-teamed and works through blocks and traffic until the ball is away. Explodes from three-point stance or when standing up, although he will be the last guy off the ball at times. Gets the corner against slower tackles and tight ends, and can push them into the pocket using his lack of height to get under their pads. Strong hands to rip off blocks and force fumbles. Stays balanced after a spin or outside-in move. Nice backfield awareness; stays home on misdirection and can disrupt passing lanes with good vertical and arm length if unable to reach the quarterback. Explodes into running back blocks.

Intangibles: Facing a nine-month rehab, at minimum, after tearing ligaments in his knee at the Senior Bowl. Team captain. Looked up to by younger teammates and respected by all players and coaches. Leader by nature, growing up in Navy household and in junior ROTC while in high school. Pushes his teammates to match his standards in the classroom, weight room and practice field.

    ROUND 7A.

    ADRIAN TRACEY OLB WILLIAM & MARY 6'3" 248lbs, 33 1/2" arms, 9 1/2" hands, 4.79 40 yard

Adding another young LB here makes sense if Schofield needs to sit for any part of the season due to his knee injury. Also, the back-up LB's on the Steeler roster are nothing to be overly excited about. Plenty of talent in this small school prospect that might get an extra look due to Tomlin's college connection.

William and Mary All-American defensive end Adrian Tracy will showcase his talents in front of coaches, scouts and front office personnel from all 32 NFL teams when he participates at the upcoming 2010 Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind. Beginning on Saturday, Feb. 27 and going through Tuesday, March 2, full coverage of the combine will be televised by the NFL Network. Tracy is scheduled to work out with the defensive linemen on Monday, March 1. Tracy becomes the second Tribe player invited to the combine, as offensive lineman Archie Harris participated in the 1987 combine. Honored by five organizations as an All-American in 2009, Tracy established himself as one of the nation's top defensive players and recently competed in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Game. A Buchanan Award candidate and a two-time first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree, the Sterling, Va., native ranked seventh nationally with 1.57 tackles for a loss per game and 15th with 0.79 sacks per game last season. With 12 sacks, he equaled the single-season school record established by Luke Cullinane in 1996. Additionally, Tracy ranked sixth in the conference in tackles among defensive linemen with 5.6 per game. In addition to registering an outstanding senior season, the two-time ECAC All-Star was one of the country's top defensive players throughout his career. His 62.5 tackles for a loss led the nation among all active players, while he ranked third with 31 career sacks - a W&M record. He also started every game of his career (47) en route to establishing a school record. - William and Mary football

    ROUND 7B.

    DARIAN STEWART FS SOUTH CAROLINA 5'11" 213lbs, 32 1/2" arms, 8 7/8" hands, 4.50 40 yard

With the second pick of the 7th round, the Steelers can add a safety to push Ryan Mundy & challenge for the last safety spot on the roster. Decent play maker, if unspectacular. Good hitter, a bit of an enforcer of sorts.

Could he be the fabled "Special Teams Maven"?

Hard-hitting player who filled the role of the "Spur," a hybrid linebacker/safety in USC's defensive scheme in 2008 … figures to either return to that position or could slide over to the vacated strong safety position held by Emanuel Cook last season … could be an all-league performer in his final season … defense will rely on his leadership and experience … excellent in pass coverage … considered an excellent tackler … has a wealth of experience with 23 career starts … single-game high is 11 tackles, turned in against Clemson in 2008.

    5. Compensatory picks- using the projected extra 2 5th round picks & the extra 7th really gives the Steelers plenty of options in the draft. It's too hard to predict trades, so Chadman will assume the Steelers use all 10 picks at this point. (In reality, Chadman will expect some moving up & down & the Steelers might actually use closer to 6 picks).
    Like...duh!

If you are going to continue to kill calmness, can you do it observantly?

For mock purposes, at this point, it is far too difficult to predict where & with who the Steelers would move with. That being said, don't be surprised if instead of trading UP from #18, the Steelers could trade DOWN. Then, with extra picks, maybe move UP in Round 2 & 3 to get better picks...who knows at this point in time?
