Dee Dub's Post Combine Mock Draft...

    Areas Covered: ILB-DT-OG-CB-C-WR-RB

I know I cant have both….Weatherspoon and Odrick so here is my choice..

    1-Sean Weatherspoon ILB
    Height: 6'1" Weight: 239 lbs.
    40 Yard Dash:4.68
    Bench Press: 34 rep
    Vertical: 40.0

Weatherspoon is an excellent combination of size, strength and athleticism for the position. He is a tough hard-nosed linebacker that plays with a great motor. Weatherspoon is a solid tackler but not a thumper in this area. He runs well and shows good range in pursuit as well as in coverage. Weatherspoon leverages the ball well with good angles and proper body positioning. He uses his hands well to ward off blockers and maintain gap responsibility. Weatherspoon is an intelligent linebacker that possesses great intangibles that along with physical attributes which should make him a productive player as a rookie.

    2-Corey Wootten DT
    Height: 6'6" Weight: 270 lbs.
Corey is an outstanding combination of size and strength for the position. His production is down from previous seasons and much of that can be attributed to a knee injury sustained in the Alamo Bowl at the end of last season. He is a decent athlete but not an explosive player off the edge. His lateral agility and change of direction hinders his playmaking ability in space. Corey does defend the run well and can anchor effectively to hold the point. He utilizes quick hands and long arms to control blockers but needs to expand his pass rush package to be effective at the next level. Wootton's measurables, instincts and toughness makes him an interesting prospect for most defensive fronts. He wasn't nearly as effective as previous seasons and knee concerns will be closely scrutinized going into the 2010 Draft.

    3-Jon Asamoah OG
    Height: 6'4" Weight: 305 lbs

Asamoah is a three year starter for the Illini and has the foot agility, body control, and intelligence to play on either side of the center. He is exceptionally quick into his blocks and has the ability to make reach blocks on opponents playing on his edge. He is a good knee bender but will allow his pads to get a bit high at times and will overextend at times causing him to struggle when having to recover and right himself against good counter moves. He is more finesse than powerful or explosive but does show good lower body strength to hunker down and stop the bull rush.

    4-Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB
    Height: 6'0" Weight: 207 lbs.
    40 Yards Dash; 4.47

Owusu-Ansah is an outstanding player at the division II level that will need to make the transition to the talent in the NFL. He is an athletic defender that can play as a rolled up corner in cover two or possible a safety in the box. Owusu-Ansah has excellent instincts and ball skills to maintain leverage as a run defender as well as making plays in the passing game. He is as solid rap tackler and can contribute on coverage units (special teams) as well as being an excellent return specialist at this level. Owusu-Ansah is a prospect that may take a year or two to make the jump to the next level but has the raw athleticism, attitude and measurables to develop into a solid NFL player.

    5-J.D. Walton C
    Height: 6'3" Weight: 300 lbs

Versus Suh and McCoy he held his own. Holding both to 3 tackles each.

    6-Daryll Clark WR Penn State
    Height: 6'2" Weight: 235 lbs.

I think if Clark is willing, he could turn into a pretty descent WR. He has great size, speed, athleticism, and the toughness to possibly make that transition. And what heck…can he do any worse than Limas Sweed?

From Clarks own mouth… "I've always been a whatever-it-takes type player. If that's how they view it, that's how they take it," Clark said.

    7-Stafon Johnson RB USD
    Height: 5'11" Weight: 214 lbs.

I think in the right system he could turn into possibly a Mewelde Moore type. He can run inside, outside, and can catch the ball. And I think early on he will be above average on special teams.
Johnson had some tough luck this past season as he missed all but the first four games of the 2008 season after dropping the bar on his throat while lifting weights. He does a lot of things well but nothing really great. He runs with good vision and does a good job of pressing the hole and heading upfield with a decent burst. He runs hard and can take some hits and stay on his feet to gain positive yards after initial contact. He has a good chance of sticking with a team and developing into a quality backup.

very well-thought out mock, i love Weatherspoon in the first and would be thrilled if Owusu-Ansah falls to us in the 4th like Ike Taylor did.

only thing i would say is you should probably draft a safety somewhere in your mock, we don't want to be tempted to bring Tyrone Carter back.
Steel Maniac's Time-Based Prediction: Lamar Jackson will be a bust and total flop in the NFL.

What Actually Happened: Lamar Jackson became the youngest two-time NFL MVP winner ever.

    Not a bad mock.

I would only question your #3 pick. We are loaded with interior OL. We need OT not more Guards. I would also look at NT (Torrell Troup) in Round #3 since Hoke and UHampton won't play forever.

Re: Dee Dub's Post Combine Mock Draft...

Nice job. I'm liking Weatherspoon the more I see of him. Against Navy in the bowl game, he really had trouble shedding blocks (and Navy's linemen aren't exactly NFL quality). This still concerns me. But, the kid is so impressive otherwise, that I'm beginning to get excited about the prospect of drafting him. His burst and pop are great and he shows nice range and instincts in coverage.

I live in Big Ten country and see a lot of games. Asamoah is one of my favorite players in this draft. He is tough as nails and really gets after it. He is very strong and really stands up well to large bull-rushing tackles in pass pro.

Ansah is an intriguing prospect. I've seen some project him to FS. Don't know much about him. I wish he was able to play in the Texas V Nation game. But, an injury held him out.

The only pick that I don't like is Wooten. I saw him play vs Auburn this year. I wrote down the following. "Great athleticism. Looks like a huge 3-4 OLB. Great Spin move and upfield burst. Very weak at POA. Easily walled off by TE. Whiffs on back in space. Rarely makes a play (even when he is close to the action)." I wish I saw him more so I could say more definitively. But, I don't think he's anywhere near strong enough to help at 3-4 DE. He'd be a good nickel rusher. Maybe he'd grow into his frame. But, I think there are players that could help more in the second round. I'd go with Chad Jones (or Nate Allen or Reshad Jones) since we don't really have a good starting FS on the roster right now.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I understand what you are saying, but what I am looking at is value in the 3rd round. I don’t see a tackle with Asamoah’s value there in round 3. To be able to get the second best guard in this draft there in the 3rd round is tremendous value. To simply go tackle there for me personally would be a reach.

And I will address the NT spot…………….next year.

Asamoah could give the Steelers two above average-to great guards ( Kemoeutu and Asamoah), which in return will help the center and both tackles.

You do realize that Wootten was hurt this past year? He wasnt 100%. He suffered a knee injury at the end 2008 (Alamo Bowl), and it did efeect his play this past year. I believe it was Wexel who said that the Steelers were very high on him and saw him as tremendous value in round 2-3. And they see him as a 3-4 DE. Like Aaron Smith when he came to the Steelers, Wootten to would have to put on some more weight but at 6 ft 6 270 he is still a force and his frame will allow for him to bulk up.

I too like Chad Jones by the way. I'd be happy with him there as well.
