ROUND 1.

MIKE IUPATI OG IDAHO 6'5" 334lbs


Big strong OG that upgrades the interior of the OL, and helps Tomlin & co establish Mr Rooney's desire to improve the running game. Gives the new OL coach Sean Kugler a brand new toy to polish up. Big, long arms, big hands- all helps to stone wall defenders.


Iupati has terrific size for an interior blocker. Plays with a lot of toughness and tenacity. Exhibits outstanding power in the running game and in pass protection. Has very good body control and balance. Possesses great short area quickness and really jolts defenders. Appears to have heavy hands in pass protection.

Lacks adequate speed for the guard position. Must improve his instincts for the game and get better dealing with complex defensive line play. Because of sub-par speed, downfield blocking needs to get better. Struggles to get to the second level in the running game.

ROUND 2.

CHRIS COOK CB VIRGINIA 6'2" 212lbs


Big, strong, tall CB that the Steelers always seem to like. Was interviewed by the Steelers at the Senior Bowl. More a Zone CB than Man-To-Man, but that suits both LeBeau's & Tomlin's schemes. Willing run defender, also has shown the ability to pick of passes throughout his college career.


Cook has outstanding height, good bulk and terrific overall size for a defensive back. Is a durable player. Exhibits the toughness needed to be physical in press coverage and run support. Very competitive defender. Has the versatility to play as a cover-2 corner or safety. Shows good instincts when playing zone coverage. Has been productive in college.

Cook only possesses average speed and probably isn’t suited to play on an island. Does not have the necessary lateral quickness to shadow sharp route runners at the next level and likely won’t be overly effective in man-heavy coverage schemes.

Jacoby Ford blazed a 4.28 40 at the Combine today, fastest so far. As a result Ford will never make it to us in the 3rd round now, Al Davis and the Raiders are going to pick Ford in the first round and pair him with Darrius Heyward-Bey!

ROUND 3

JACOBY FORD WR CLEMSON 5'9" 185lbs


Only a slight WR, but extremely fast, good hands (and big hands for such a little guy- 9 1/4 inch) & a tough underneath reciever. Will help as a KR & PR too.


Ford is a premier track athlete with excellent timed top-end speed. Exhibited great foot quickness as a returner and running reverses in college. Flashes the ability to adjust to off target throws and bail out his quarterback. Was a very productive player whose team always tried to get him involved early and often.

Ford lacks the prototypical size of a perimeter NFL receiver. Is a raw route runner, who doesn’t always get in and out of his breaks smoothly. Return potential is there, but return skills could use some refinement. Despite his track speed, open field running could improve.

ROUND 4.

MICAH JOHNSON ILB KENTUCKY 6'1" 258lbs


Big, hard nosed LB that brings leadership & a strong work ethic to the team. Very good run defender that can sit & learn behind Farrior for a year before being moved to partner Lawrence Timmons in the middle.


Johnson possesses a great combination of size, strength and toughness necessary to play linebacker at the next level. Is a highly competitive player who loves being in a phone booth and can really lay a hit. Is a really experienced talent who’s been productive. Is very instinctive against the run. Versatile player who could end up inside or on the strong side in a 3-4.

He really lacks great pure speed. Has limited range and isn’t really a sideline-to-sideline tackler. Isn’t overly comfortable in man or zone pass coverage. His ability to be an every down player is questionable because of his coverage shortcomings, but he can rush the passer.

ROUND 5a.

ROBERT JOHNSON FS UTAH 6'2" 197lbs


One guy that doesn't get much coverage, but has shown some solid playmaking abilities over his career. 13 career interceptions isn't a bad record to hold. Big enough, fast enough, to learn behind Ryan Clark for a year or two before being asked to take over.

Read & React: Takes proper angles on receivers coming over the middle or track down backs from behind. Good range in the back half due to his length and straight-line speed, but is not always there to help on deep throws. Also a slow step to react to misdirection and will overrun plays.

Man Coverage: Struggles in man coverage. He lacks the change-of-direction skills to stay with receivers with above-average agility or route-running ability. High and slow in backpedal. Does not have the fluid hips to transition.

Zone Coverage: Typical centerfielder, able to attack the ball when the play is in front of him or to his side. Will go shoulder-first to lay out receivers coming into his area. Has the height, length and vertical leap to get after jump balls in the end zone or break up high passes over the middle. Fast enough to trail receivers coming through his area and break up passes.

Closing/Recovery: Flies downhill to attack ballcarriers, but needs work recovering and tracking the ball when players get behind him. Has a burst to the ball when throws are made over the middle in cover-two. Able to read the quarterback's eyes and jump deep sideline routes when not playing off the line of scrimmage. Once beaten, he lacks the immediate acceleration to recover.

Run Support: Aggressive coming up against the run, able to cut or wrap up ballcarriers in space with his length. Ducks his head at times when trying to tackle in the flat. Not strong enough to take on and shed blocks inside the box.

Tackling: Long arms make it difficult for ballcarriers to escape his grasp, but he is not an explosive tackler. Will miss in the open field because he lacks great change-of-direction skills, and also tries to lay a shoulder instead of wrapping up. Offensive linemen can manhandle him when attacks at the second level because of his lack of strength.

Intangibles: Had a tough upbringing in South Central Los Angeles, and his father was murdered when Johnson was very young. Popular among his teammates and has an excellent work ethic.

ED WANG OT VIRGINIA TECH 6'5" 314lbs


Not everybodies favourite option, but Wang is big, fast & mobile for a guy his size. Converted TE. Long arms, big hands. Well spoken when interviewed. Work in progress that Chadman is sure Coach Kugler could work with. Put it this way- Tony Hills vs Ed wang- who wins?


Wang has great size and bulk. Two year starter at left tackle that does a good job of locking his arms out and riding rushers past the pocket. Has great speed and foot quickness which helps him set quickly. Changes direction well.

Too quick to help out guards when not engaged. Does not have the lower body strength to consistently drive defenders off the ball. Stands up too tall and takes too many false steps. Does not play with enough of an edge and finish blocks.

If the Steelers are going to make their defense younger by drafting defensive players in the 5th and 6th round they may as well not even draft them and just take players that play offense and try to outscore everyone.

The Steelers have two cornerbacks that didn't see much playing time last year, Mundy and Carter, not to mention a FS that's exploring his options. The Steelers can't afford to wait until the tail end of the draft to begin to replace these players.

Chadman, I have to say, if your mock is even remotely close I'll be very disappointed and be hoping that the offense will be able to hang 40 on every team, they'll need at least that to win games.

ROUND 6.

EKOM UDOFIA NT STANFORD 6'2" 326lbs


Genuine 3-4 NT, having played the position in college. Strong, thick & squat. Surprising that he isn't mentioned more with the influx of 3-4 defenses. Benefit here is that he can sit & learn behind 2 good NT's in Hoke & Hampton for a couple of years before being asked to contribute much. At worst, could be Hoke's eventual replacement.

Round 7a.

JOHN CONNER FB KENTUCKY 5'11" 246lbs


When not busy fighting Terminators, John Conner plays a traditional FB role for Kentucky. Big, strong, decent blocker & good reciever for his size. Hard not to like this guy. Even as a 7th round pick, he could contribute right away.

Analysis
Inside: Bullish runner who doesn't waste time looking for the big play. Good lower leg drive and forward body lean to get the tough yards. Runs with good pad level and keeps his feet driving to generate as much yardage as possible. Good ball security. Keeps both arms locked around the ball. Has enough wiggle to surprise the unsuspecting defender and can gain yardage in chunks.

Outside: Typical fullback. Lacks the speed to beat linebackers to the edge and has only marginal agility to elude.

Breaking tackles: Tough back to bring down as he keeps his feet moving and runs with good pad level. Doesn't offer much more than the helmet, shoulder and knees pads for the defender to target. A determined runner who will become a coach and fan favorite due to his second- and third-effort runs.

Blocking: Old-school traditional lead blocker willing to sell out to knock the linebacker out of the hole. Good size, explosiveness and accuracy to clear the way. Athletic enough to adjust in the open field to hit the moving target. Keeps his head on a swivel in pass protection and blocks inside-out. Aggressive in pass protection. Will take on the bigger man and holds up surprisingly well due to his accurate hand placement, use of leverage and determination. Accurate, reliable cut-blocker.

Receiving: Soft, reliable hands. Will allow the ball to get into his pads, but is quick to secure the pass. Shows the ability to extend his arms and pluck the ball out of the air. Appears to have enough athleticism to handle more complicated routes, but was typically used only on short to intermediate dump passes and the occasional screen.

Intangibles: A former walk-on who is well respected by coaches, peers and fans for his physicality, toughness and consistency. Played in a school-record 54 games over his career. Team captain. Also plays extensively on special teams. Nicknamed "The Terminator" by his teammates.
