Super Bowl XL - Choke on this, ref!
Ben Roethlisberger's first Super Bowl win came with plenty of help -- from his running game, the Steelers' D and ... the beleaguered officiating crew. It was a tough day for the zebras (we'll allow them to remain anonymous), who botched several key calls -- leading off with whiffing on Big Ben's phantom go-ahead TD plunge in the second quarter, one that replays showed the Steelers QB clearly never reached paydirt.
The officials also helped shut down Seattle comeback efforts late in the game by ruining what could have been a go-ahead TD drive, first nullifying a huge catch by TE Jeremy Stevens with a ghost penalty -- taking away field position inside Pittsburgh's 5-yard line. On the next play, Seattle threw an interception, and adding insult to injury the refs whistled Matt Hasselbeck for his lame attempt at a tackle -- calling a mysterious personal foul on the QB. We'll never know if some of these calls would have affected the outcome.
