Typically, trades don't happen in the NFL because of salary cap reasons. When you get rid of a guy, the remainder of his signing bonus gets accelerated to your current season's salary cap, making it nearly impossible to unload big name guys that have long-term contracts with large signing bonuses attached to them. However, with there being no salary cap this season, you can cut a guy with a bad contract with no crippling cap ramifications. And you can also trade veterans without having to worry about accelerated signing bonuses ruining a potential deal.
I've been a proponent of improving our offense by upgrading our offensive line for some time now. Although our o-line has shown improvement, it is still merely adequate. Our best players are only average to slightly above average guys...there is no one that can truly dominate like Mike Webster, Dermontti Dawson, or Alan Faneca in their primes. We don't even have a Jon Kolb, John Jackson, or Jeff Hartings type.
Dominant linemen like Jake Long, Joe Thomas, and Ryan Clady have entered the league in recent years, but we have not been able to be in position to draft guys like that. Those teams, though...the Dolphins, Browns, and Broncos...could all use a legit deep threat at WR, though, which is something that we have. Would you be willing to put together a trade package featuring our current LT Max Starks and rookie phenom WR Mike Wallace in order to get a dominating young LT like Long, Thomas, or Clady? No one wants to get rid of dynamic young player like Wallace, but we'd still have Ward and Holmes, plus you could possibly draft a replacement for Wallace (someone like Jacoby Ford in the 3rd round) and hope that Sweed develops. What else might it take to get this admittedly totally off-the-wall hypothetical scenario off the ground? Who's with me?
