    Coach News: Rip Scherer to stay with Carolina

    Quarterbacks coach Scherer to stay with Carolina Panthers

    After weighing the opportunity to return to college coaching, Rip Scherer has decided to remain the Carolina Panthers' quarterbacks coach.

    Scherer said in a text message Tuesday afternoon that he had declined an offer to become Virginia's offensive coordinator.

    He also said he wasn't involved with interviewing for any other jobs, saying "nothing else happening -- strictly rumors."

    There had been speculation in recent days that he might be a candidate to become quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers because of his close friendship with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and the fact that the team's director of football operations, Kevin Colbert, is his cousin.

    Scherer interviewed with Virginia coach Mike London last Thursday and took several days to contemplate an offer to direct the Cavaliers' offense.

    Scherer has an extensive background in college coaching, including serving on the Virginia staff in 1979. His ties in the state are extensive; he's a graduate of William & Mary and former head coach at James Madison.

    He recently completed his first season as the Panthers quarterbacks coach.

    Third-year quarterback Matt Moore flourished in the final five games, leading the Panthers to a 4-1 record. The passing game struggled for much of the season, however. Veteran Jake Delhomme was 4-7 as a starter with 18 interceptions before suffering a season-ending broken finger.

    Before joining the Panthers, Scherer was assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach of the Cleveland Browns.
    It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust & sweat & blood...

    So if Scherer didn't interview here (as was reported a few days ago), then who are we interviewing for QB coach? We've hired an o-line coach and interviewed Bobby April for the special teams job, but that is all that I've heard so far.
    Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

    Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

    We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

    We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

    There are talks that they may make Fitchner (our WR coach) the QB coach. I guess we'll be on the hunt for a new WR coach then.
    ours is not to wonder why just invert and multiply...
