Cris Carter Says Goodell "Ain't Got No Rules, Man"

At a time when more folks are realizing the stark differences between the NFL under Paul Tagliabue and the NFL under Roger Goodell, a guy who retired several years before the transition has openly wondered whether he could make it in today's game.

Former Vikings receiver Cris Carter, now an ESPN analyst, told the new class of rookies as part of his passionate, riveting remarks to them that he doubts that either he could survive under Goodell.

"I don't think Michael Irvin and I could have played in the league we have now," Carter said. "'Cause Roger Goodell, man. Rog ain't got no rules, man. . . . Rog -- ain't no rules, man. If you screw up, like it ain't etched in stone like you might get two, three games, four games. Rog gonna sit you down, though. And we're seeing guys get suspended for the first time in stuff that like we never seen before.

"So if you think the league is the same as it was then and here and no, it's not, man. They ain't messin' around, bro."

Carter's career nearly was derailed before it could get going, due to issues with substance abuse. The same problems dogged Irvin for a chunk of his own career.

And so the question becomes whether any potential Hall of Famers in the crowd will be able to stay out of trouble long enough to show the rest of us the talents that God has given to them.

Yea, Carter would not survive under Goodel and those players who did what he did probably don't deserve to. Playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right because God happened to waste physical talent on someone who can't properly behave within social norms.

I will agree that there does need to be more consistency in the punishment as far as a standard but punishment is appropriate.

Suspending players for conduct is one of the (very) few actions of Goodell that I approve of.

At first, I thought that Carter was doggin' Goodell...

But, looking at it closer, he's telling the rooks that
the NFL ain't fooling around with stupid and/or
dangerous behavior....

That he and Irvin were able to get away with it before,
is not how it is now. And that is a good thing.

Zero Tolerance is what it should and always be.

The titlle was misleading. I think Goodell has way to many rules when it comes to play on the field. As Troy said, it's becoming a pansy league.

I agree the punishments need to be more standardized. Guys missing games for pot, but someone like the Patriots one OT gets busted with 200 oxycontin in his pocket by the cops, wears a wire for the feds, and you never hear one word about it from the league? that is total BS. Another soft punishment for the Pats....

When New England Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur was arrested in upstate New York in April, he had 202 OxyContin pills labeled as being made in Canada, according to police reports, The Boston Globe reported.

Kaczur was arrested in New York on April 27 after police said a small amount of OxyContin was found in his truck following a traffic stop. Kaczur then helped federal authorities arrest the man who was allegedly supplying him with the drug, according to the alleged dealer's attorney.

Next week, Kaczur is scheduled to be arraigned in Whitestown, N.Y., town court on a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a misdemeanor. OxyContin, a powerful and potentially addictive prescription painkiller, is also sold as a street drug as its effects mirror those of heroin.



According to police reports, Kaczur, who was returning from his hometown of Brantford, Ontario, had the pills in his pocket when he was pulled over on April 27 on the New York State Thruway in Whitestown, just west of Utica.



A spokesman for the company that makes the pills and a drug industry specialist said the pills, each marked CDN on one side, were made in Canada and imprinted to help prevent cross-border smuggling of OxyContin, according to The Globe.
