Thread: Tomlin has done something no other Steeler HC ever

Re: Tomlin has done something no other Steeler HC ever

During last nights Ravens/Skins game, Madden and Michaels were talking about the Ravens coach, John Harbuagh, and they said that Baltimore hired Harbaugh because they were looking for the "Next Mike Tomlin"!!!

Thought it was pretty funny that with all the bashing of Tomlin around the old Trib Board, that others outside of the situation often see things in a different light.

I liked Tomlin at first ...
Then last year I became a little skeptical b/c of some minor things.
But this year I think he proved that he's not just talk.

Yes I still disagree w/ some minor things BUT overall, i think the players listen to him and he has passion. AND he's still learning!!!
Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go...

Oh yeah for sure! In media circles and many radio shows that I listen to, Tomlin is highly revered. People just oogle at him when talking about what kind of guy he is and how fortunate the Steelers are. At least twice a week, I hear a radio person on Sirius NFL Radio or ESPN radio say something really good and respectful about him just out of the blue. He is definitely respected and settling into his own persona as a coach. People are noticing!

If you need a TD and a FG and you have a chance to get the TD that you don't think might come again, you go for it and let your players play. The offense failed, Tomlin did not.
D, the decision to go for it wasn't the issue, it was a gutsy call and I like his juevos. The issue is that as a rule, play action passes work the best when your running game is effective, because the defense, particulary the DEs and OLBs play in to stop the run, thus freeing up the outside. Because our run game hadn't been established as effective, the OLB didn't have to fear the dive play and broke out on the FB.

Why not do a a fade to the end of the endzone with our 6'-8" TE Matt Spaeth?

I'd modify your last sentence to "The offensive coordinator failed, the team did not".[/quote:3pmfcd94]

Are you sure it was an OLB? Just going from memory I thought it was a DB that came up and stuffed Davis short.

And overall I would have rather seen that play call on second or third down and then line 'em up and see who's got it when it matters and run it up the gut on 4th down.

Also, why did Davis not take that route into the endzone to begin with. It's another 2 or 3 feet, was there a defender making that impossible? I'd still say the offense failed, and they were set up to do so by the OC.[/quote:3pmfcd94]

The pass to Davis was on 3rd down. And it was a DB (Ken Hamlin) who stopped him short of the goal line.

They did run it up the gut on 4th down, and Russell had no chance with 2-3 guys who penetrated into the backfield to throw him for a 2 yard loss.

I've never been so excited about a coach before Tomlin.

Reminds me more of Noll than Cowher.

Seems to really connect with people and his players.

He's the first coach I remember seeing on the sideline that might be as excited about this team as I am.

Not bad for a too inexperienced, "overpaid janitor." Just again proves the Rooney's know better than the fans. Thats why they run one of the most successful franschises in pro sports.
Loved the choice then, love it now. This guy is the BEST young coach in the league.
I liked the hire and like him now, but, still wish he took into account how F**king awesome this defense is playing. I admire the 4th and goal call to try and get a TD, but, the points were more important and would have put the Steelers only a TD away on the scoreboard. There was so much time left in the game remaining two scoers behind could have been fatal, fortunately not. Not getting points there could have been very costly; Tomlin should thank his defense for bailing him out on that one.

That being said, it is obvious that the players respond to Mike Tomlin in a positive fashion. He asks them to play for 60 minutes and to a man they play for 60 minutes. If the other team believes they are going to be afforded time off during a game they are gravely mistaken. This team doesn't quit, ever.

You have to go for a TD when you are that close. You can't assume you get a second chance at a TD. You can assume you will get close enough for a FG.

I'd love to know what happened there. To me it looked like the blocking was going to the right but Russell went to left. I have to wonder if he missed the call.
Playing Fantasy Football does not qualify you to be the in the front office or on the coaching staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are professionals and you are not!

On 4th and goal, they didn't just want the points - they wanted MOMENTUM... I actually agreed with the call. As Aikman was on TV saying, "you kick the FG", I was like, "no you don't... you RAM IT DOWN THEIR THROATS." To me, that's what sets our team apart from many others... WE CAN.

BTW, if it's 4th and 1 from the 20, it's a no brainer kick... but, from the 1, with our defense, you go for it... even if you don't get it, you might cause a safety...

If you did statistical analysis regarding the probablilities of winning if you had kicked the field goal vs. going for the TD there, perhaps a FG might have been the way to go, but that is the kind of call a coach like Rich Kotite or Ray Handley makes. I was screaming for him to blast it in with Russell on 4th down, and although it didn't work, I still think it was the right call.

It should not be lost on anyone that Tomlin was one of the best defensive backs coaches in the league. I'd attribute the continued development of our CBs partly to him.

Yeah but your statistical analysis would fail to incorporate the Arians corollary. You know...running the same dam play on 3rd or 4th and 1 every time. Does he think its the 50's and a team from as far away as Dallas would never have seen us play or try that play down on the goalline before. Dip$hit, eveyrone has film on that same lame a$$ failed run play...mix it up for crying out loud.

only pretend it says Arians. I know it still wouldn't be gramatically correct, but lets just assume that anyone by the last name of Arians sucks at this point for having the same last name as this douchebag.
