USC Report: Spurrier pleased with sharing play-calling duties with son

COLUMBIA BUREAU

COLUMBIA -- While not happy with his offense’s production, University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is happy with how he and his son have worked the play-calling.

Before the season, the elder Spurrier said while he would remain the offensive coordinator, he would hand over the play-calling duties to his son.

“We’ve got in what we hoped would work. Obviously we wish we had ran the sweep right instead of the left last week,” Spurrier said. “Maybe we wouldn’t have fumbled.”

He was referring to the play in which tailback Mike Davis fumbled into the end zone from the 2-yard line in Saturday’s 14-7 loss to No. 2 Georgia.

“That’s what you second-guess yourself (about),” Spurrie said.

Spurrier said he had been calling “most of the plays” in the first three games, estimating he called about 75 percent against Georgia.

Play-calling “hasn’t been our problem,” Spurrier said. “Blocking and throwing and catching has been our biggest problem.”

USC ranks 11th in the SEC and 92nd out of 119 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in scoring average at 19.3 points per game. The Gamecocks (1-2) rank last in the SEC and 107th in FBS in rushing (93.7 yards).

... Davis will be suspended for the Alabama-Birmingham game for violating the athletic department’s class attendance police, Spurrier said.

It has been known since August that Davis would be suspended, but Spurrier hadn’t revealed which game the senior would miss.

Spurrier also said several other players he refused to identify would also serve a one-game suspension against UAB on Sept. 27.

Davis has rushed for 203 yards in three games, including a 50-yard carry.

... The Gamecocks are tweaking their defense as they prepare to face Wofford College’s option-oriented wingbone attack. Darian Stewart said he would play more strong safety, while Emanuel Cook will move up to spur.

“E-Cook’s more of a run-stopper,” Stewart said.

... Spurrier reiterated that wide receiver Kenny McKinley would miss the Wofford game as he continues to recover from a Sept. 4 hamstring injury.

“He obviously had a pretty good either torn or pulled hamstring,” Spurrier said, adding these kind of injuries “can last four to six weeks at times.”

... Spurrier said Jarriel King will start against Wofford at left offensive tackle ahead of senior Jamon Meredith of Simpsonville, and “will hopefully start the rest of the year there.”

Meredith started at left tackle against the Bulldogs after serving a two-game NCAA-mandated eligibility suspension. Meredith will compete for the starting left guard spot with Lemuel Jeanpierre, Spurrier said.

... Tight end Wesley Saunders, who injured his back lifting weights, should be able to play Saturday. ... Wofford leads the Football Championship Subdivision in rushing, averaging 400.5 yards per game, and is second in total offense at 540 yards. The Terriers rank 101st out of 118 FCS teams in pass defense (300.5 yards). ... Wofford has allowed 44 points in its first two games, beating Presbyterian 38-21 and Charleston Southern 41-23.
