LATROBE — Cornerback Bryant McFadden has practiced with the first-team defense the past two days but is not No. 1 on the depth chart.
So says Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
“Deshea (Townsend) is our corner. B-Mac is our nickel,” Tomlin said Sunday as the Steelers wrapped up training camp at St. Vincent College.
Due to a mild groin pull, Townsend missed Thursday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills in Toronto. McFadden started in his place.
Even though Townsend was back on the practice field Saturday and Sunday, it was McFadden who got reps with the first-string defense.
“I’m just easing my way back in,” said Townsend, an 11th-year pro who turns 33 on Sept. 5.
With McFadden, 26, running with the ones Sunday, Townsend took reps at safety.
