    Capizzi cut, Drummond signed

    Steelers sign Pittsburgh native Drummond

    By Scott Brown
    TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Thursday, July 31, 2008

    Buzz up!

The Steelers signed return specialist Eddie Drummond and the Pittsburgh native practiced with the team this afternoon.
To make room on the roster for Drummond, the Steelers reached an injury settlement with offensive tackle Jason Capizzi.

Capizzi re-injured his left foot and will undergo surgery on it. The Pine-Richland High graduate battled a stress fracture in his left foot during the offseason and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Capizzi's injury is related to that.

Capizzi is effectively a free agent though he is eligible to re-sign with the Steelers in six to eight weeks.

    story continues below

Drummond returned kickoffs and punts for the Chiefs last season and averaged 21.2 yards per kick return and 6.9 yards per punt return.
The Penn State product excelled as a return man for the Lions from 2002-06, and the 28-year-old Drummond made the Pro Bowl in 2004 when he returned two kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns.

With Marion and Capizzi out, and Ernster and Drummond in, there should still be another spot open when Sepulveda goes on IR. Perhaps they will bring in another punter to compete with Ernster, maybe the mustachioed Scott Player or a guy who has punted in Latrobe often over the past few preseasons, Mike Barr. Since both guys played in Arizona last year, we might as well take somebody back from them, after sending a steady stream of players from the Burgh to the desert since Whis and Grimm were hired out there.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Surprised that they brought Drummond in. With Moore, Mendenhall, Holmes, Reid and Bloom, I would have already thought that they have enough competition at the return positions. Seems like some of those guys may not be showing a lot as kick returners (I think Moore will be the guy for punts). Or, it's also possible that I'm reading too much into this.

This isn't accurate. They release capizzi because he re-fractured his foot that he fractured in the spring. If they placed him on the IR they had to pay his full salary this year. Drummond actually took Sepulveda's roster spot because he was placed on the IR today. There should be one more roster spot available.

Another freakin' Lions connection again. Will someone please tell Colbert the Lions suck already. We don't need anymore guys that have gone through the Lions system and are now available.

One thing Coach Tomlin said that caught my attention was Drummond has covered kicks in the past. Bringing a special teams guy in is never a bad thing.

Haven't done an obscure photo reference in a while. Did this one to welcome Mr. Drummond to the team.
