WVU picked to win Big East championship

As expected, the West Virginia University football team was selected to win the 2008 Big East Conference Championship as announced at the conference’s Summer Kickoff held in Newport, R.I., on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers received 22 of the possible 24 first-place votes while the first-place finish marks the third consecutive season that West Virginia has been picked to claim the Big East crown.
South Florida and Pittsburgh also received first-place votes.
The Bulls finished second with a total of 149 points – 40 points behind WVU’s total of 189 – while the Panthers came in the third, finishing with 128 points.
Rutgers was picked to finish fourth followed by Cincinnati.
Connecticut, Louisville and Syracuse rounded out the league’s poll.
West Virginia finished the 2007 season with an 11-2 record, 5-2 in the Big East, including a 48-28 upset over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
The Mountaineers have held at least a share of the conference title in four of the last five seasons but will be attempting to claim its first title under first-year head coach Bill Stewart.
