Comics: Books and Strips

As Steelers fans, we have a wide array of interests outside of our most common interest.

One of the great things about going through that shrinking edifice of information called the newspaper is going to the back and the comics section. A lot of great things about life are profiled daily in the comics. Among some of my favorites:

Get Fuzzy
Pearls Before Swine
Doonesbury
Speed Bump
Non Sequitur
Tank McNamara
Rhymes With Orange
Funky Winkerbean
Crankshaft

There are a few others that appear daily, but that is a good cross section.

I'm not as into comic books, but I do appreciate them for what they are. Also, I like the newest thing in comics: anime. My ol' lady has introduced me to Mega Tokyo and even though I don't have a bunch of time to follow the story thread, it has caught my interest to look into more.

Don't know how many comics geeks we have here among the Steeler faithful. But let's open it up: What do you like? What do you read? Let's find out...

Comic Strips: Life hasn't been the same since Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side went away. I still get a chuckle out of the Lockhorns and I kind of like Pearls before Swine.


Comic Book: In my youth I read Fantastic Four, SPider Man, and the Avengers regularly. I also read Hulk and Captain America, but not every issue. Always preferred Marvel -- not a DC guy. I don't read comic books any more but love the movies.

They do sell comic BOOKs now -- which are like issues 1-50 of SPider-man, etc. I may get a few of those on a vacation sometime.

spot on MJG, i looked forward to reading that strip every Sunday and it was one of the few that i would read during the week. But Sunday was the shizzle because of the color..Bloom County was another one that was great. Bill the Cat, Opus, the monster in the anxiety closet..nice.

As far as comics i read the standards, Spidey, Iron Man, Avengers, Ghost Rider (Nick Cage,...really?), GI Joe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the Eastman and Laird black and white, not the cowabunga pizza bastardization)

I would also recommend 'Lone Wolf and Cub', usually found in the manga section of Borders or B&N. Great art, great storyline. The cult movie Shogun Assassin was based on these books.

A few years back,I was a HUGE comic book reader.Some of my titles were:

I'm not that familiar with the Lockhorns, so I'll have to look that one up.

Calvin and Hobbes is legendary and I like trolling the C & H archives from time to time. I also have a ton of old Far Side books lying around.

Another comic strip to look into is Making It. For those here from SoCal you may already be familiar with it, but this is a fun theme strip from Keith Robinson who may be one of the more underrated comic strip writers out there. When I was younger I read and collected mostly DC for a while then started to go for Warren publications, CREEPY, ERIE, ect. then they started to reprint all the the old Gaines mags. Tales from the crypt, vault of horror. I think the last comics I actually followed were the serials in Heavy Metal. I was a sick child.

They were the kind of comic's you never really wanted to trade, some of those stories in them some of my friends really did not want to have next to them at night in their room.
I did like hoW TFTC, stayed true to the basic stotylines on T.V.
The interjection of hot girls showing their seemed to smooth the way for the next generation.
After all ,we all know now if you see a hot girl in the horror movie, pretty soon someone's smelling dead meat.
