Mike Fast!!
Just heard Eric Davis on the NFL network say, "a couple years back the Eagles had a guy named Mike Quick, this guy right here (referring the Wallace), is Mike Fast". :tt2
I know a lot of Steeler fans are down on Wallace and are counting the days when he no longer wears a Steeler uniform but this guy is a game breaker. He is the one guy on this entire team who can take it to the house each and every time he touches the ball. He has another gear that not many else in the NFL has. And I sure wish the Steelers would get the ball into his hands more. That 3 yard slant he took to the house was a thing of beauty.
-
Well, for any team that forgot- now they know that they MUST account for MW at all times. Not just deep routes. That, along with AB's injury, will hopefully slow the roll of those who wanted to get Mike out of town.

Heard on Mike and Mike this morning. I think it was Chris Carter who said Wallace has the best "functional speed" in the NFL. I hope he gets smart and decides to stay with the Steelers.

Same we need to keep him. He and Lewis and I think it's possible.

How bout "Speedy Gonz Wallace"?

I like it! :Clap
Arriba Arriba, Andale Andale...

I think we end up keeping him, but I think at the same time, the front office will be cautious because he's had a case of the drops. Whether it be from lack of concentration or just not being prepared, it's something that he'll have to fix. Especially because when a guy who is fast loses a step (either by injury or age), they rarely have anything to fall back on. Mike really doesn't have a lot going for him other than his speed. But D@MN does he have that going for him!
-
I don't think there is anyone who wants MW to leave or doesn't appreciate his speed. In fact we all love it! It's a matter of how much that speed will cost the team. Is it $5M a year speed, $8M a year speed, or 10M a year speed and for how many years? Legitimate questions. His speed is elite but overall; I don't think he is worth a double-digit in millions yearly salary.

That is an important distinction that goes beyond 40 times in the underwear olympics. Some guys can sprint, but it doesn't mean they have that "functional" game speed. That loosens up a D and allows the run game to flourish and other receivers to get open.

Wallace has top dollar speed but he doesn't have top dollar receiving skills. Here is the problem:
1. Already $25-30M over the cap at end of season
2. Need to sign Wallace to probably a Top 10 WR contract.
3. Also need to sign or tender: Keenan Lewis, Max Starks, Rashard Mendenhall, Issac Redman, Manny Sanders, Ramon Foster, maybe even Dwyer, others?
4. Need to negotiate an extension for Maurkice Pouncey
5. May have to restructure and extend Colon to keep him.
5. Big new TV money doesn't help until 2014.
This is going to be an extremely tough job for the front office because they are going to have to release a number of players or get them to significantly restructure their contracts. No way they pay Harrison $8-9M next year. Same for Troy. Hampton and his $2+M will have to go. Foote should go, but we have no one to replace him. Kiesel will have to take a cut to stay (he will).

If we have to pay all these guys big money, they better help us win a big game first. I say we pay the guys that will win us SuperBowls.

Wallace generally has had good hands. A few more drops this year than prior years, but in my mind, it's not a big issue
Wallace now has five drops in six games this season, which accounts for 10.4 percent of his targets. This is very unusual for Wallace, who had only dropped passes on 2.9 percent of his targets in his first three seasons in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He had never dropped more than four passes in a single season.

We all want to keep Wallace, but not for what he is asking. I cant imagine paying him more than Brown, not any more at least. And it looks like K. Lewis is making himself a bit more expensive with his play this season..

I think the drops are because he is being asked to run more short to intermediate routes where the ball is actually getting to him to be counted as a drop. A lot of the long bombs he would miss in previous years never touched his hands so they couldn't be marked down as a drop.

I could see Wallace getting $500K to $1M per year more than Brown but not more than that. The problem with Wallace is that when his greatest asset goes, his speed, it will go fast and his other WR skills are not elite enough to make him still worth that money. IMO Brown has the elite WR skills that will translate well into his early 30s when he will be able to be a Hines-like player.

Brown probably has better hands and runs better routes, but as much as I like Brown, I think he is best suited as a #2. I do think he could have more longevity, but any issues with Wallace likely wouldn't be seen until after he finishes a second contract.
Managing the cap seems as though it will be particularly difficult this year, but the FO will find a way to keep the guys they want. They always do.
-
In this offense Brown can certainly be a #1 something like a Steve Smith for the panthers.. Browns rise reminds me of Hines.. every year we always wanted someone better, someone taller, someone faster and all he did was Carve out a hall of fame Career..

That is exactly how I see it too. He may not get the accolades or the ESPN highlight clips, but he gets the job done and will for a long time.

The question is whether they are willing to tie up approximately $18M (about 15%) of the $120.6M salary cap for two WRs. That will be a very different approach for the Steelers. They have done it without hesitation for defense units like LB and DB, but never WR.

That Wallace catch and burn was the turning point in the game and may just be the turning point in the season. I know I've been critical of Wallace, but dayum, dayum, dayum. Skida ma rinky dink, skida ma rinky doo, that boy's fast.
-
sad to say, but I think wallace is gone after this year.
the steelers have had a real bargain in MW and he has earned his payday the right way.
hope he goes to an NFC team.

Do we know what Wallace is asking for?
Do we know what Wallace is asking for?
It was reported he turned down an average of $9M per year.
Do we know what Wallace is asking for?
rumor has it that Mike Wallace was asking for Vincent Jackson $, which is about $11 million/year.
And I sure wish the Steelers would get the ball into his hands more.
The Steelers get the ball into Mike's hands a lot...
He just doesn't always hold onto the ball once it gets to his hands...:p
Seriously, that 51 yard catch-and-run was the game changer...he is extra fast, without a doubt...
-
I have never seen a report of what exactly what the steelers offered in guaranteed money or structure.
if wallace was offered the same deal as brown, as some here think he should sign, I don't blame him for turning it down.
the fact thar nobody knows speaks well of MW and how he has handled this situation. I couldn't care less about him missing meaningless preseason games to avoid injury as he has been mocked mercilessly on here.

But unlike Hines Ward, and any comparison to a hall of fame receiver, or even a Steve Smith, Brown doesn't score touchdowns. 33 career games played, 3 TD receptions. Not good.
-
I still think we'll tag him. Eventually he's gonna realize if he keeps getting tagged and signing for 1 year, he's gonna lose out in terms of the sheer number of big contracts he gets over his lifetime.
Get as much as you can now. And then if you want more, hold out later. It works for elite players. And then we can really get upset with you.
But then you change games like yesterday and we fall back in love.

not to split hairs dub, but brown also has two kick returns for TD's. One punt and one KO.

Agreed. his routes are now shortened. his YPA are way down. he has to catch in traffic and that is not Wallace's strong suit. Wallace can be tackled with a fingernail.... as long as the defender can get a figurenail on him.

No doubt. The only problem I have is that MW is an ACL or MCL away from never being the same receiver again. His only game is speed, without it, he isn't even a starter.

Yes I know but we are talking about what these guys do as receivers. And 33 games played with only 3 TD's is really not that good at all. For all the things Brown can do as a receiver he for some reason just can't find the end zone. What will Brown look like next year with Wallace gone if he only catches 3 TD's?

oh, I agree completely. That's why I have to chuckle when people say brown is the better WR.
I don't buy that for one second.

Serious question Dub (or anyone) - why do you think that is? He is super talented, why isn't he catching more in the end zone? Is there a reason Ben isn't looking for him? On the surface there does not appear to be a valid reason he is not scoring 6 on a regular basis.

I dont think I can put my finger on it. Maybe it's several things. In the open field he isnt going to break many tackles. Inside the 20 (redzone), he's going to see a lot more press. Especially when the Steelers are inside the 10. And when the Steelers do get inside the 10 many times Heath is the primary (use to be Hines), and they run the ball a lot down there. Brown is quick and does have good speed but he doesnt have that gear that Wallace has. And that gear has a lot to do with why Wallace gets as many TD's as he does.
Personally, I dig the dude and I am glad he is on the Steelers. And he does move the chains. One thing I know for sure, he sees a lot more single coverage and rarely has a safety playing him over the top like Wallace. But underneath and off those bubble screens he is as good as it gets.
