Your Own Personal Top Ten Favorite Steeler Players
MSM started this idea, but it was sandwiched in the middle of the Bradshaw steroids thread, and was misinterpreted to be a ranking of the all-time best Steelers instead of just a list of personal favorites. So, let's give it its own thread. List "your guys" here.
I was born in 1975 and therefore have no personal recollection of the great 70's Super Bowl teams aside from NFL Films replays and the like. Therefore, my personal list of ten would be guys that I rooted for in the 80's, 90's and 00's.
1. Greg Lloyd
2. Hines Ward
3. Ben Roethlisberger
4. Carnell Lake
5. Rod Woodson
6. Troy Polamalu
7. Jerome Bettis
8. Levon Kirkland
9. Aaron Smith
10. Heath Miller
Ten honorable mentions to James Farrior, Dermontti Dawson, Mark Bruener, Antwaan Randle El, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'Afala, Joel Steed, Justin Strzelczyk, Chad Brown, James Harrison, and Jerry Olsavsky (I still can't believe that guys like Big Snack, Big Red, and Peezy didn't crack the top 20, even though they were better players than a lot of the guys I listed ahead of them...a lot of great Steelers and a lot of great memories).
If I had to rank my favorites among the Hall-of-Famers and should-be-Hall-of-Famers from the 70's teams, I would have to go something like this:
1. Mel Blount
2. Jack Ham
3. Joe Greene
4. Jack Lambert
5. Mike Webster
6. Franco Harris
7. John Stallworth
8. Terry Bradshaw
9. Lynn Swann
10. L.C. Greenwood/Donnie Shell (both should be in Canton)
It is hard for me to mix the two, because the first list is full of first-hand memories, and the second is through learning about your team's history which took place before my time. I look forward to seeing how some of you older folks that have personal experiences with both groups will intermingle the legends with some of the more recent players.

4 Superbowls in 6 years tells the tale.
I could pick 10 more after that group, including Ben, Hines, Foster, Lake, Lloyd, JHJ, Andy Russell, Woodson, Kirkland, Dawson.

I just think it is too early to make anyone else's top 10. He's on his way, though.
I'm upset at myself that I forgot about Merril Hoge when making my list. :x

Holmes is on Shifkos. Big surprise.

Re: Your Own Personal Top Ten Favorite Steeler Players
Here is my ten...but it is too hard to rank them....it is even hard to pick only ten...and I wasn't even around for the 70's teams...
Greg Lloyd-If I had to pick a #1, he would probably be it. I loved watching him play D. Opposing offenses were scared of him!
Joey Porter-took the torch from Lloyd and didn't disapoint.
Big Ben-Best qb in my lifetime as a Steeler fan. I wasn't around for the 70's team
Franco Harris I wasn't old enough to see him play until late in his career. My first football number was 32 because of him...I think I was 8, but I remember being so pissed seing him play for Seattle
Barry Foster He had some great years. I think he is under appreciated for what he did.
Jerome Bettis what a pickup he was!
Rod Woodson I was at the game against the Jets early in his career when he returned a punt. He was a favorite of mine ever since.
HInes Ward Has there ever been anyone more dependable?
Allen Faneca Regardless of us not resigning him, he was one of the most dominating lineman of his time. He was a huge part to our success.
Yancey Thigpen One of my favorite moments ever was when he pulled the terrible towel out after scoring in the playoffs.
That was ten and I feel like I have left so many out....We are lucky, because we have had alot of great players play for us through the years

10. Louis Lipps
Hard to leave so many out.
11. John Stallworth
12. Hines Ward
The list goes on and on...!

I have lived in Ohio my entire life, and have been a Steelers fan my entire life. I find it impossible to root for Ohio St. for one reason...I think all Ohio St fans are also Cleveland Clowns/Cincy Bungles fans. I root against OSU for this one reason. I live close to Youngstown (where jim Tressel coached prior to OSU) and still hate them. Is that wrong?

SN1's Top Ten list (not ranked, just 10 Steelers I love):
Hines Ward
Terry Bradshaw
Franco Harris
Joe Greene
Greg Lloyd
Yancey Thigpen
Dermontti Dawson
Big Ben
Jack Lambert
Rod Woodson
...man, this is hard. One cool thing about my list. I have everyone on my list's jersey (or had it when I was a kid).

Yeah man its okay. I can't criticize you anyway. People give me the evil eye when I say I'm from cleveland area (born and raised) but I love the Steelers. You can't be forced to love your hometown team. Funny thing though is that I like Indians and Cavs, just absolutely hate the Browns. Living in Columbus now (and since I am an OSU alum) naturally the Buckeyes are my team for college. As for hockey, Blue Jackets are tough to root for although i try, but I still have a soft spot for the Penguins because I was a huge Jagr fan, he was breaking in right when I started liking hockey.
No Kevin Greene anywhere?? Although, I don't have a list, he would be on it, if I did.
back in 94, I was waiting out in line outside of three rivers stadium waiting for playoff tickets to see the Steelers kill the browns, then lose a heartbreaker to San Diego, and Kevin Green pulled up outside with his half-size pickup, filled with pizzas. He talked with us for a while and emptied his truck with the pizzas. How anyone can not like a guy like that is beyond me.

Great story! To me, Kevin Greene personified what a Steeler is.
Kind of a bigger, friendlier version of Jack Lambert. If I needed 2 body guards & I could pick any 2 Steelers, those 2 would be it.

Re: Your Own Personal Top Ten Favorite Steeler Players
Posted this on Steelerslive as well.
1. Merril Hoge - My personal favorite. Classic overachiever. He was a tough, gritty runner who outshined 1st round bust Tim Worley. Good dual threat as well as he still holds the Steeler record for most receptions by a RB in a season (50 catches). A shame concussions had to end his career early.
2. Rod Woodson - In my mind, he is the best defensive back to ever play the game. He tackled better than Deion, was arguably just as good a returner (before ACL tear), and he successfully transitioned from CB to Safety and lead the league in interceptions twice after doing so.
3. Dermontti Dawson - One of the best centers to ever play the game. He pulled often on run plays, which requires tremendous athleticism for a 300 lb lineman.
4. Kevin Greene - Just an animal. He reminds me of a hired hitman because he played for so many teams, and was just a sack machine. Really odd personality, and kind of "on edge"...but it was great watching him play.
5. Carnell Lake - He was great at sacking the QB on safety blitzes. In fact, I don't think the Steelers have had a safety sack the QB as much as him since he left the team. (lee flowers had some good years...couldn't cover for his life though)
6. Alan Faneca - Great run blocker, for the same reasons as Dirt. Sucks he left on a "not so good" note, but he went where the money was.
7. Big Ben - He was the missing link. I think we can all agree that poor QB play was one of the main things that kept us from getting over the hump throughout the 90's. Ben's 05 playoff run (aside from his horrible SB game) was the main reason we got as far as we did.
8. Aaron Smith - Integral to the run defense, as this season showed. Plays the 2 gap spot in the 3-4 DE position as good as anyone in the league.
9. Tunch Ilkin - Great lineman, and an even better person. He was my church youth group leader when I was younger, and is one of the most humble people I've ever met.
10. Jerome Bettis - Very rarely do you see a 250+ lb RB with the kind of moves he had. Loses points for going to the Pete with his damn Notre Dame gear on, but whatever. Wink

Re: Your Own Personal Top Ten Favorite Steeler Players
While I believe Rod Woodson to be a superior DB to Deion...no way was Rod as explosive as Deion. Deion hit top speed in 2-3 steps, and had freakish agility (for his size) second only to Barry Sanders. What people miss with Rod...is the fact that not only was he fast...but he was smart. He played a cerebral game...he liked to gamble...and did so well.

Anderson was awesome! He would practice at a high school field near my grandma's house in Emsworth. Nice, soft-spoken guy and a great kicker! Good call, Nor-Cal.
I didn't list any ex-Steeler that is still playing -- conflicting interests. I did like Porter and Randle-El (don't think they're top ten, though) but I can't get past the present-day teal and burgundy. Maybe others feel the same?
