Like you, I don't think it's likely that passing on Dennard will "haunt" the Steelers "for a decade"...but I wouldn't call Dennard a "middle of the pack CB prospect." Most of the scouts had him rated in their top 3 or top 4 CBs of the entire draft class...that's not "middle of the pack."
Middle of the pack first round prospect I meant. Its not like they passed on a patrick peterson like prospect
He might end up being a great man to man CB, but passing on a CB doesnt cripple a franchise.

All through the process there was plenty of talk that Dennard was a good man to man cover corner who struggled in zone. Since we play primarily zone, I don't know why anyone was surprised we passed on him other than being obsessed with the perceived panic need we had for a CB.
I'm not saying we don't need to be playing more man to man but as long as you know who runs the defense we aren't changing much.

They just dont have a high value on CB....when the front 7 is playing well, the CBs look like world beaters

Not in itself, no. But Dennard could end up being very good. We just don't know. Who knew Richard Sherman would be the CB he is? Yes, Peterson was more of a known top shelf guy, but it's almost never a known deal. If Shazier ends up nothing special, and Dennard becomes a top CB, we will regret it. Time will tell. We just don't know. I am not predicting we will regret it, but at the time of the draft pick, I screamed at the pick. Now that I have learned more about Shazier I have more optimism.

Everything comes to degrees. I don't mind them favoring/prioritizing the front 7 over the backfield, but I do mind when they take it too far, like when they virtually ignored the OL for all those years. I mean, sprinkle in a few higher picks on CB once in a while. I think it's kind of arrogant to only draft CBs so late. It's like, "We are so smart, we can get by with 5th-round CBs." Really? Stop trying to prove how genius you are and get some gad dung CBs who can play before they've been here 3 years.

I'll just say this. Dennard was solid...Would have been ok with the pick. But when you sit here & put Shazier side by side you could understand why Shazier was the pick. Shazier has a chance to be "special"...I don't think Dennard's ceiling breaks the special line.
The Steelers must be really confident in what they have at CB. Erase the 5th round tag on Richardson. Talent pool pushed him there. He's being groomed to replace Ike. I think the Steelers are happy with what the have on the outside for '14 & Richardson will have a year to learn to be plugged in there for '15. That's the reason for no urgency at CB in draft or FA. Where I think the upgrade exist or potential for upgrade exist is inside. Blake & McCain could add an element they haven't had since Townsend. Townsend never got the glory in this defense but his ability playing over hot routes inside created timing issues & check downs that just aloud that extra step needed for the blitz to get there. We haven't seen that with the QBs progression against the Steelers over the last couple years.

Kaboly: Cortez Allen on possible extension
July 26, 2014 by Mark Kaboly
The Steelers made it clear the other day that they want to address some of their more immediate expiring contacts before focusing on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s deal.
Translation?
The team wants to sign cornerback Cortez Allen to an extension before their self-imposed deadline of the start of the season.
Allen is in the final year of his rookie contract, and with a unit void of any up-and-comers, Allen should be priority No. 1 for the Steelers.
The Steelers have approximately $6.5 million under the salary cap, which would be plenty to sign Allen to a long term deal.
If an extension is on Allen’s mind, he isn’t letting on.
“That’s not my concern right now. Football is my concern,” Allen said. “I am just trying to help the team win games. That stuff will take care of itself. I don’t focus on it too much.”
When asked if the team has approached him with any contract extension information yet, Allen said: “Not as far as I am concerned.”
The Steelers could also target linebacker Jason Worilds for a long term deal before the season that would actually alleviate them of some cap money. Worilds agreed to a transition tag in March that guarantees him nearly $10 million for this season.
However, the Steelers seem to be willing to wait to see when it comes to Worilds. With Allen, the Steelers likely have learned a lesson two years ago when Keenan Lewis wasn’t offered a contract heading into his final season.
After a solid year in 2012, Lewis signed a lucrative contract with New Orleans last offseason.
Allen deflected the question of if he wanted to get a deal done before the start of the season.
“I am not 100 percent sure,” Allen said. “That’s an organization decision.”
My take? Allen will get an extension before the start of the season.
The Steelers really don’t have much of a choice.

If they sign Cortez that would be huge. Id hope they let Worilds walk and focus on Heyward and Ben then

Except for Justin Gilbert. He was rated higher on the Steelers board than Shazier was.

Because you were in the war room?
I had gilbert higher than Shazier as well
I believe I had gilbert 7 and shazier 13.
Dennard and Mosely 23 and 28, respectively
I would hope they had gilbert higher and the dennard thing was just entirely a smoke screen. Gilbert was a better fit, better ball skills, return ability, and could play FS if needed.
