This is what pisses me off about Tomlin. You, me and everyone on the board could see that HOOD sucks and Heyward is far more noticeable on the field. Why does it take him so long to be convinced that Heyward is better. Same with Vince Williams vs. Kion (Whatever his last name was).
And the result from better DL play was sacks, turnovers & a win.
Heyward is clearly an upgrade over Hood at this point (although even Hood got a sack!). Need to get the NT position sorted out, and the D that was being critisised will become fearsome once more.
The 3-4 Zone Blitz starts with the front 3. If they do their job, LeBeau looks like a genious.
Hood got a 10 second coverage sack when Smith ran into him and he fell on him. Hood generated zero pressure on that play and got a gift. Broken watch being right twice a day thing.

Yeah ... because this never happened under Cowher (cough, cough) ... Harrison NEVER sat while Clark Haggans played (often miserably).

Let's not forget what playing with a LEAD does for a defense either. Stop playing from behind and suddenly the D can attack a bit more and not be so reactive.

Haggans played on the opposite side of Harrison's natural position.
True Ghost
Haggans played on the opposite side of Harrison's natural position.
The point is .. whether it was deciding to not attempt to see what Harrison could do over keeping Haggans in ... or Ike sitting .. etc. It's not like Cowher was immune to the very same thing you were attempting to blast Tomlin for.
Heyward was special for the Buckeyes. I still remember him taking over the Arkansas game...just a one man show. He is worthy of the hype. Mike Adams was always mediocre at best, never worthy of the hype.
Haggans played on the opposite side of Harrison's natural position.
Harrison backed up BOTH LB positions and replaced Haggins when he got hurt game one 2005. He had 3 sacks in four games, when Haggins came back Harrison was back on the bench.
Harrison would be a fine upgrade to Haggins.

I thought one of the key plays of the game was early on when the Jets drove to our 11-yard line and then faced a third-and-1 at the 2-yard line and Heyward stopped Bilal Powell for no gain, forcing the Jets to settle for a 25-yard field goal and only a 3-0 lead.

Ike Taylor ... Charred Scott/DeWayne Washington ... that's another couple of years. I know, it doesn't fit in with the "Cowher didn't make these type of decisions" mantra, but it's true.

Sid you can't really be making the argument that Cowher played young players over veterans can you??? I loved Cowher as a coach, but his stubborn refusal to play young, potentially better players over his veteran guys was CLEARLY one of his weaknesses.
Heyward did have a nice game. I noticed him getting a lot of pressure. He didn't get a sack, but he did get pressure.
The Steelers could have a nice tandem on the right side of the D with Heyward and Jones.
Even the best coaches in the NFL miss on evaluating talent from time to time. The really good ones get it right more times than not.
Cowher was a good coach but he was far from perfect.
Heyward was double teamed at the point a few times yesterday and held his own very well. Now thats not sexy but it's what 5 tech have to do in our system. He seemed very good yesterday in not letting blockers get to his frame. That one aspect is where I see Hood getting moved out of plays because he does not seem nearly as good at that technique as he should be. Case in point the better tech is now starting.
Heyward was great. Even more impressive was that when Keisel went down, he played almost every snap and still looked strong.

It is a GREAT example showing that your "it was not Harrison's natural position" reasoning is not valid. Harrison has a skillset that is suitable for either side. He excelled in either role. There was an opening on the right when Porter departed, so Harrison started opposite Haggins who remained on the left side. Had Haggins left and Porter remained, Harrison would have been on the left. When Woodley (who is definitely a left side ONLY guy) replaced Haggins a year later versatile Harrison stayed on the right.
BC (who I like BTW) did not start Harrison because he underestimated his ability.
My point is not to bash BC but to show that ALL coaches sometimes underestimate players.
Dont like THAT linebacker example?
How bout Mike Vrabel who languished on our bench until he because a key figure on those Pats championship teams?

Vrabel was probably Cowher's biggest miss in evaluation, and he is the only guy I can think of who did not play with the Steelers and went on to excel elsewhere.
As for Harrison, he was underestimated by everybody. No way the Steelers would have spent their first 2 picks on guys originally projected as OLBers if the FO and coaching staff believed that Harrison was the guy for the job.

While true my point to Sid who lays all evaluation blame on the head coach, if you are going to do that, you gotta do that with misses like Harrison during the Cowher era too.
While he did draft 2 linebackers, Tomlin certainly had no basis for confidence that Harrison could replace Porter based on seeing how BC used him.
Wasn't Harrison also cut by the Ravens?
And Vrabel was only successful in New England because they cheated.:p

yes, he was.
and good point about Vrabel, it's a lot easier to do well on an exam when you already have the answers.

so because cowher made mistakes you advocate and support tomlin doing the same?.....brilliant

No it just give prospective when some people act like BC NEVER had a miss.
Mark Kaboly @MarkKaboly_Trib:
Cam Heyward had 6 QB hurries/pressures against Jets. Now leads Steelers with 15

Kudos to Cam....
About time these idiots realized Ziggy "skates" Hood is not a fit for this team.
Now just let Fangupo dress for a FN game and lets see what he has up the middle.

of course not... but too many people reference Cowher like he wouldn't make this mistake.

I see people on the board mention this a lot. Out of curiosity, is this something you guys really believe or is it just a tongue in cheek thing/sarcasm regarding the Patriots success? I know it's probably dumb on my part that I have to ask, but I am curious if people really buy that idea.

Hell yeah they cheated... not saying these guys didn't have skill but that team cheated like crazy.

The Patriots were definitely caught videoing opponents and the NFL punished them for that. The usefulness of the videos can not be determined, however, since the penalty for videoing their opponents the Patriots haven't won much in the post season. Many people like to correlate their lack of performance in the playoffs to not having the videos to review. That and Tom Brady's comment "It's easy to answer the questions, when you know the questions on the test." or something like that. Everyone assumes he was talking about having the videos to review, but in reality, I believe he was referring to one of his coaches who has a photographic memory and was able to give Tom more information about an opponent than most assistant coaches can.
Me, I don't know if the videos helped or not, but it's over and done with, fines have been paid and draft picks have been taken, it's over as far as I'm concerned. I don't like it, because, potentially it cost the Steelers a shot at another Super Bowl, but there's no way to positively say whether it did or didn't.

I see where Ariz is at least allowing Ta'amu to sniff the field once in awhile. Couldn't hurt for us to do the same with the guy we kept over him.

Teddy Bruschi "We were so good we would have won without secretly taping teams"
They cheated... hell, maybe other teams cheat as well but they got CAUGHT.

I'm not saying they didn't cheat, I'm saying the usefulness of the videos to help them win games will never be able to be determined, because the NFL saw fit to destroy the tapes.
Pappy
There will always be an * surrounding those Pats teams in many peoples minds. That is the cost of cheating. Do I believe it helped them significantly? Probably not...but no one will ever know.

i see some of that but what i see more of the tomlin supporters that always refer back to cowher having some losing season compared to tomlin having none. true enough, but this team is definitely going in the wrong direction under tomlin. he has showed no progress in a variety of ways, draft picks either suck or he cant coach them, or he cant hire coaches to coach them up. no discipline, unprepared, etc etc etc.
but instead of wanting those things to change, either by tomlin progressing or by getting rid of him, they support his failures by saying, 'cowher didnt get fired'.
really, thats the thought process?
thats like having your first spouse cheat on you while you were married and then have your second spouse cheat on you and justify it by saying, 'well my first spouse did it too, so i guess im good with it'

That is a terrible analogy...
The more accurate analogy would be, "Don't treat your second spouse worse than you treated your first one."
