For the same reason that "Cowher's players" come into the discussion...
Would we have been happier if Tomlin had said "Holy moly- we're screwed!"?
You make a valid point. I would have preferred a middle ground sort of answer - something less than a cocky one-liner and something more than saying the ship is going down. One of those political non-answer answers.
Coach T is right. People fret and prognosticate all the time about what they think will happen, but the games are going to be played on the field. That is when the true measure of the team will be realized.
If the Steelers stay healthy they are yet again a playoff contender.
People fret because they see a 'lack of plan' or a poorly executed plan in the making.

Okay. People can fret. Tomlin doesn't care about people fretting now. What matters is the season.
Obviously the people who thought Haley was a bad fit the minute they hired him were wrong.
Tomlin IS spot on with his line... look at this board. Bunch of guys whining and crying about next season and it's only March. No matter what he says you guys will rip him because Steeler fans are a spoiled bunch.

Right now? Questionable, given the lack of a starting caliber RB, TE or WR2.
I don't see where his statement was cocky, all he said was see us in the fall not in March. He didn't proclaim the Steelers will be a super Bowl team, he just said what you see now may not be what you see in the fall is how I took it.
