I mean look at Bellichick. Name a player on his squad that likes the guy. Name someone in the league that likes the guy. He is the best coach in the NFL and he isn't popular, charismatic, nor does he have any catchy phrases for the newspapers.
There are a lot of former Patriots in and out of the NFL, and very few of them have anything negative to say about Belichick. Of course, there are a few (Lawyer Milloy perhaps is the most well-known), but considering how rapidly the Pats roster turns over, there are far fewer than might be expected.
And the Patriots have a great relationship with Drew Bledsoe, and even Bledsoe admits that Belichick made the right decision.
As far as naming someone in the league that likes Belichick, I suspect there are a few. Josh McDaniels, for one. :D
Heyward- 0 SB
McClendon- 0 SB
Allen- 0 SB
Jones- 0 SB
Worilds- 0 SB
Thomas- 0 SB
Williams- 0 SB
Yea, exactly the same team that took us to the SB...
The leadership of the SB D is still there. Troy, Woodley, Clark, Ike, Timmons, Keisel. All 6 are pro bowlers. All 6 still here. Now splash in some youthful talent in Allen, Jones and Heyward...and you have some talent on D. Young, mixed with solid leadership who has been there and done that. I'm sorry...I just don't see the lack of talent excuse some are giving to Lebeau.

How does Welker feel about Belichick? He was quoted as saying "you just have to endure him, put up with him". "but he does it to everybody, it's the way he is". Lets not even get into the spygate stuff.
I mean do you think Belichick runs such a tight ship because he is buddies with his players? Because his players like him, want to drink a coke with the guy? Or do you think he runs such a tight ship because he is rough and puts fear into his players...no nonsense kinda coaching?
BTW: My intent wasn't to bash Belichick...I would love to have him as a coach of the Steelers...actually like the old school coaching style. My point was in referencing Todd Haley...and some peoples belief that he needs to be liked to be effective.
every game this year the Steelers have been in position to WIN late in the game (except maybe the Cincinnati game).
I applaud your optimism but the 4th quarter of the game against the Cheaters was not even remotely competitive. The defense did everything as wrong as they could possibly do it. They couldn't stop the run. They couldn't tackle the catch, they couldn't defend the pass and they couldn't stop the big play. They were gouged and played with like a toy. There was very very little to be optimistic about in the 4th quarter of that game.
With general parity in the NFL, most teams should be able to keep the game competitive late. This team of ours is as big a disaster as I can remember. They don't expect to win anymore. They're all wondering when the next fumble, bumble, mistake is going to happen.

Belichick made Welker a very rich man. If you recall, he traded a 4th round draft choice to Miami for him just before the 2007 season. Prior to that, Welker was a marginal player in the league. Had he stayed in Miami, he may never have enjoyed his current level of success. Certainly his own hard work and talent has played a part, but it was Belichick that saw how he could be used to best effect. With all that said, though, Welker's comments certainly ring true - I don't think Belichick is an easy coach to play for. Neither was Parcells. I suspect Lombardi was a hard-case, too.

I know you're not trying to bash Belichick, and I hope I'm not wearing Patriots sunglasses 100% of the time. Belichick doesn't always draft the right guys, he doesn't always have the greatest game plan, he isn't easy to get along with. But as you state, he is more in the mold of the no-nonsense coaches of the past than many of the buddy-buddy Pete Carroll and John Fox types of coaches that are out there today.
And the guy does have a personality - he just doesn't show it on the post-game press conferences that the national networks do. But he does a Monday post-game radio show on one of the Boston radio stations where he breaks down the previous contest and explains what the in-game thinking was during crucial times in the game, and engages in light-hearted banter with the radio hosts. Way more detail than the fluff and evasions that he offers up to the network guys.

Yep. Everything I've been saying was wrong with our defense was on full display in the 4th Quarter on Sunday.
Why defend the defense? Because just last season they were 5th in scoring defense. Surely that is a good defense at its most basic level. Maybe the wheels can come off quickly, but they can also return just as quick if the right moves are made.
last year... and even then I don't think they passed the eye test when we needed them to step up.
I agree our D can return to greatness but it can also get worse or stay this bad if we make the wrong moves and lately... we've made all the wrong moves.
