The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed forward Cal O’Reilly off of re-entry waivers from the Phoenix Coyotes, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
O’Reilly, 25, has split this season between Phoenix and the Nashville Predators. O’ Reilly has spent the majority of the season with Phoenix, where he has collected five points (2G-3A) in 22 games. In 27 total games this year, O’Reilly has two goals, four assists and six points while averaging 12:53 minutes.
O’Reilly had been acquired by Phoenix earlier this season on Oct. 28 in a deal that sent a 2012 fourth-round draft choice to Nashville.
A 6-foot, 188-pound center, O’Reilly enjoyed the best season of his four-year career with Nashville last year, establishing career highs in games played (38), goals (6), assists (12), points (18) and rating (+4).
Originally a fifth-round selection (150th overall) by Nashville in the 2005 NHL Draft, O’Reilly has appeared in 107 career NHL games with Phoenix and Nashville, scoring 13 goals, 27 assists, 40 points and three power-play goals.
The Toronto, Ontario native has played parts of five AHL seasons – all with Nashville’s top minor-league affiliate the Milwaukee Admirals. O’Reilly has appeared in 262 career AHL regular-season contests, tallying 56 goals and 253 points. He also contributed 15 points (4G-11A) 31 postseason games with Milwaukee.
O’Reilly played three years of junior hockey with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) between 2003-06. In 197 career contests with the Spitfires he totaled 45 goals, 149 assists and 194 points. O’Reilly added 21 points (7G-14A) in 21 postseason contests with Windsor.
O’Reilly’s younger brother, Ryan, is the leading scorer this season for the Colorado Avalanche.
By claiming O’Reilly off re-entry waivers, the Penguins and Phoenix Coyotes will equally split O’Reilly’s 2011-12 salary, with Pittsburgh paying him a prorated portion of $525,000 over the remainder of the season.
