Schefter: Woodley next
Timmons, Brown and now Woodley. I hate this last one.

I hope the restructure is in inverse relation to his weight

This is great but if anyone has paid attention to this football team for the past 10 years or so, this is what they do. I got a kick out of those who were in panic mode, like the dismantling threads we kept seeing over and over. And all along I kept saying, the Steelers will restructure and get under the cap. And whoever they want to keep they will keep. And those they cut are those they didn't want.
It is the Pittsburgh Steelers way!! :tt2

I hope your not implying I'm in a panic? I just don't like them restructuring Woodley and adding to his dead cap hit in the future years.

The writing is on the wall for Wood this season. I don't expect to see a 270 pound Woodley and if we do see a 270 pound Woodley he's going to be in the best shape he's been in since being a Steeler. He can't afford to have another down season and I don't believe we'll see one from him. I expect him to be the player we want him to be, he just needs to stay healthy. I'm still trying to figure out why so many seem to just want to cast the guy off. It would be a huge mistake. He's a dynamic outside linebacker coming off a down year. (Injuries have certainly hindered his progress)

Yeah, I hope Woodley gets it together soon...he's been "dead weight" the last season and a half...we don't need a bigger "dead cap" hit that will keep us from cutting him if he continues to be "dead weight."

No not you...I think it is obvious who those posters are.

what a joke.
woodley took last season off and now your'e going to pay him even more upfront guaranteed money?
why in the world woulkd you want to give a guy a bonus for coming into camp out of shape and dogging it most of the year?
terrible restructure!

I know what you're saying but it's not a bonus.....it's a restructure to ease his cap hit. It's either do this or cut a player.

He gets NO additional money. He just gets a huge portion up front as opposed to each week.
He gets NO additional money. He just gets a huge portion up front as opposed to each week.
It also makes him more secure as a player. It also means he can get lazier and the Steelers can do nothing about it. I just hope he chooses to be great instead of mediocre.
I will believe this happens when it is announced by the Steelers.

Woodley is going to look dominant once again. He really should be a 4-3 DE though.

What?? Dude he had 35 sacks over 3 years as an OLB in this 3-4 from 2008-2010. He is fine as an OLB, he just needs to get his head on right and more than anything, stay healthy.

Because the Steeler front office and coaching staff are around the guy every day and have a little better feel for the reasons behind his lack of production than we do. He is a dynamic play making olb and they believe he will be again. The other reason is to free up more cap space for this year. They have a plan believe it or not and those plans may include players that we are all writing off as either old, malcontent or worthless.
We have no idea what the Steelers think, but it will unfold in the next few weeks. Their pick at 1.17 is going to shock the majority of this board, IMO.

Woodley is a stud. He'll be back to form. He's had injury issues throughout his career and as a result has been up and down. Either really good or really bad. Always comes up big in the big games.
I think injuries can be a bit of bad luck and some guys can get over the hump and be ok. We've had a lot of injured guys or guys coming back from major injury. I think we'll get our groove back and Woodley will be a big part of it. I believe in the guy. I'm not sure we have the whole story here.

i understand that.
point being is the money that he would have had to work for the next few years of his contract have been given to him up front. he bagged it last year now he has even less incentive to workout and produce,

I beg to differ with you on this one. Woodley can "afford" to do whatever he wants. He already has more guaranteed money in the bank than most of us will see in an entire lifetime or even the lifetime of our kids. That's the big problem with guaranteed money.
-

Just my opinion. I think he would suffer less injuries and won't have a long career at OLB.

its like paying your kids in advance for doing their chores.
whats the motivation if they already have the money?
and lets face it, most of these players have the mental makeup of children.
-
Restructuring also ties the player and the team closer together, because it becomes more expensive in future years to cut that player. For example, had they not restructured Colon, it would be cheaper to cut him now.....nevermind the fact that they gave him a long term deal to begin with.

The only way this would make any sense is if this is a guy's last contract before he retires. Woodley has additional contracts in his future to play for. And they'll be much bigger than this one. There's absolutely a motivator assuming money is the only thing that motivates people.
Money or no money, a lot of people will do their best in any situation.
It'd be neat if we all had to broadcast our work lives so we could be ridiculed for how lazy we are at the McD's grill from time to time. I can see the posts now, "Why would Squidkid Schedule a Dentist Appointment During the Lunch Rush?" or "Flippy Not as Committed as Part Time 16 Year Old - Time to Cut Him for Youth Movement".

Question:
When a player restructures his contract and takes the bonus in lieu of his salary wouldn't he pay more in taxes with that lump sum bonus or do they spread that bonus out?
-
The Steelers will take a big hit with or without the restructure if Woodley flops. Better to get the cap relief and put him on notice.First...Let me say I believe Woodley will get the message and get back to form. Believe me...There is a message for him & his agent about "whom" he was in 2012 and where he better be going forward. He is in the long term plans if they restructure him. As someone said, Woodley is just getting the majority of his money due to him for 2013 up front. It isn't a raise or additional monies. The Steelers incur the cap hit of his 2013 monies spread out over the remaining years. The risk is additional dead money if he flops. But if he returns to form....His salary would be right scale with an upper tier 3-4 OLB. "Upper Tirer" equates to sacks.
-
The Steelers claim Woodley always was big but didn't mention game shape, also Woodley admits he didn't play well and said it had nothing to do with the money, his injuries set him back, hammy's and ankle sprains.
I don't think he intentionally wanted to dog it out there, he did the best he could under the circumstances
I do know Woodley can impact a game when he is healthy, myself included we forget the good things he did like... an NFL-record seven consecutive playoff games with a sack.
He has the skills, and I believe with all the talk out there about him, he'll take it to heart and play like we know he is capable of this coming season.

I would imagine that the tax bit is pretty much the same once you are making that much money. Sadly, I don't have any personal experience that I can offer. :)

I don't know about Pennsylvania taxes, but in Ohio, lump sum bonuses are generally taxed at a higher rate than salary...

I'm far from an expert on this, but isn't it because the bonus appears as though you are in a higher tax bracket? These guys are already in the highest bracket anyway...

I don't think so...
For example, I've received a bonus in the past (far more modest than any NFLers) that did not move me into a higher bracket...yet, it was taxed at a greater amount...

The NFL players are already in the highest tax bracket. So their regular check or the bonus will be treated exactly the same.
It's different for us poor shlubs where a bonus check looks like it's putting us in a different tax bracket. I'll give you an example.
I make $5k/yr at McDs. That puts me in the 10% tax bracket. Then I get a $1k bonus and the gov't thinks I'm getting paid biweekly and making $24k/yr. So that $1k check is treated like I'm in the 15% tax bracket.
Woodley makes $1M per month. Puts him in the 40% tax bracket. If he gets all of it in a bonus and the Steelers give him $12M, the US gov't thinks he's making $144M per year which is still in the 40% tax bracket.
When you make ooodles of money, you're so far above the highest tax bracket, it doesn't matter. Nothing changes.

all woodley has to do is put forth an effort the last year of his contract to get his next.
the steelers have set him up to take the next couple seasons off(like he did this year) and then workout and perform his last.
given how woodley is more concerned about the tv, facebook, social media aspect of sports and celebrity lifestyle, i can see him continuing down that road until cruchtime for the next contract. who knows, maybe woodley is satisfied with the million he has and doesnt care to play football after this contract.
-
Lets say NT Joe Blue makes 5 mill in salary per year with a five yr.contract, then the team restructures his contract. He is in his second year of the contract with three remaining to restruture.
Now instead of paying him 5 mill in base the remaining three which would be 15 mill, they give him an eight mill bonus year one, and one mill in base. That would be 9 mill then spread the rest out the other two years at 3 mill each.
Before he restructured he was making 5 mill a yr. Now with a one yr. base at 1 mill but 8 mill in bonus wouldn't he be paying more since his income level is increased from the original 5 to now nine?
Any tax lawyers in the house? I'm sure you can figure a way that Joe Blue only pays a minimal amount in taxes.:)

Along these lines, Chad Johnson has said he lost interest/focus on football when he started making more money off the field.
So that seems reasonable from that perspective. But I'm not sure that's who Woodley is. He's been up and down throughout his career. I really do think the track record shows that it is injury issues.
Some of it's luck. And some may be in his control. It would be nice if someone pushed him by stepping up and showing he's ready to take Woodley's spot.

The tax rate is the same for $5M or $9M. He'd be at the 40% rate in either scenario.
