Steelers sign TE David Johnson to one-year deal. He missed 2012 season with knee injury.
Wow. Just wow.
Super Bowl here we come...:tt2
I thought Will Johnson was better than DJ...
please god, no.
Short term back-up plan at TE?
And it get worse by the day /hour. Who's next Farrior or Ward.
I guess this kills my Tyler Eifert pick.
I guess this kills my Tyler Eifert pick.
I wouldn't like that pick, Super...but I'm now a Rooney. Anyways, Chadman is right...makes sense for a temporary TE plan since Miller is out with his injury. That doesn't mean Eifert could not be our pick.
Insurance in case Heath isn't ready AND they don't find one in the draft.
I know, I know... we all want a super star at every position... but, I personally think the team has done a solid job thus far this offseason... It's a 1-year deal, probably very little signing bonus. If they luck upon someone else, they cut him and have minimal hit.
They have filled in with players that can play/have played in the past, but, are not exactly ideal starters.... stop-gap players. I think it's wise and cap-smart... from there, you see what happens in the draft. You fill in later with other experienced FAs over the summer.. same routine every year... pretty ho-hum thus far
I guess this kills my Tyler Eifert pick.
you weren't going to be able to draft Eifert with our 2nd round pick anyway...
I though maybe DJ would follow Mendenhall to wherever else, so he could lead block again for him.
I just feel there is more value in a TE than a receiver in Haley's offense, but moreso we don't really know if Heath will be the same Miller we had before the injury. Also, with Miller's age and contract I thought it would be good to get a top TE now while we have opportunity.
This kid is terrific, he's like a vacuum on the field catching everything in sight, but my name isn't Colbert so my opinion doesn't count.
Hawaiian,
Your right, I have him in the second round in my mock but would of moved him up.
you weren't going to be able to draft Eifert with our 2nd round pick anyway...
I want him with the first. Still do. Johnson is a serviceable backup and will do OK with Heath out of commission.
haha .... Another idiotic signing.
Do they even watch film of the other 31 teams out there? Do we not have a pro player personnel guy anymore? Does their "Available Free Agent" list at every position have all ex-Steelers on it?
That's the only way to explain David Johnson being at the top of any "TE" list I know of.
David Johnson is not a TE.
He is a large, round waste of a roster spot
This guy's a blocker and not much more. Weslye Saunders was cut last year and signed with the Colts, he was the better receiver. I think D. Johnson and Paulson will fight it out with whatever rookie we draft. Hopefully its Eifert and we cut D. Johnson after Miller returns from injury. I like Will Johnson better at FB or HB better than D Johnson as well.

Exactly.... Saunders was a good receiving target. He shouldn't have been cut.
W. Johnson was a better FB and no worse of a receiver than D. Johnson.
Then you have Paulson (who Tomlin likes) and saw playing time and of course Miller. This signing makes NO SENSE!

It is smoke and mirrors for the draft and a camp body.:-P
Oh FFS.........
Again this thread confirms how basically sheeplike and moronic most fans are. David Johnson is good depth, strong solid blocker. Good teammate. Profootballfocus says it well about the comparison between Will Johnson and David Johnson. Will Johnson is marginally better as an athlete and offensive player. David Johnson is far superior as a blocker. Final analysis David Johnson is a better player. But let's get the morons all aboard the hate on DJ train, choo-choo.
Does this mean that Leonard Pope won't be returning?
Crap...;)
I'm not a big fan of David Johnson, whose best game as a blocker was probably the preseason game where he got hurt.
That said, this signing means absolutely nothing. He probably signed for the minimum and is not guaranteed to make it through camp. This is what the Steelers do; they make sure that they have people under contract at every position before the draft so they can take the BPA. As they see things, Paulson is the only healthy TE on the roster. Johnson gives them 2 and gives them competition for Will Johnson at FB. DJ is not even guaranteed a roster spot and this move likely has no cap impact. DJ is simply insurance, nothing more.
Does Haley use a FB in his offense cause that is really what David Johnson is?

Really? I thought Will Johnson proved this year that he was a better blocker than David Johnson has ever been at any point in his career.

David Johnson can blow people up when he hits them. The problem is that he doesn't always hit somebody. Will Johnson usually seems to get a hat on somebody but doesn't seem to blow people up like a Kreider. Both are flawed blockers, IMO.

Exactly, as a FB, you need to get a hat on somebody. I've watched David Johnson to many times run as a lead blocker and not touch anybody. If no one is there by their lonesome, you find somebody to hit even if that means helping an o-lineman with his block.
Can't stand that about DJ.
I vomited in my mouth when I read this:sad: Are we really this hard up
I vomited in my mouth when I read this:sad: Are we really this hard up
What are you talking about?
Really? I thought Will Johnson proved this year that he was a better blocker than David Johnson has ever been at any point in his career.
True! Will Johnson is a fixture here now.
This signing was a nice gesture on TS part. As just about everyone has noted, it is not likely DJ makes it to the final cut even.
But, what interests me here is the casual, unthinking way TS sacked Weslye Saunders. Why? He did what had to be done in the few chances he was given. He might have been the best blocker of the entire bunch. Yep! Including Miller.
I saw clips of Saunders bashing into the sled with Tomlin right over his shoulder and beaming ear to ear. No other Steeler was close to this force. This really makes me wonder where is Tomlin on some of these decisions. Is he too submissive?
Oh! I forgot Saunders took a banned over the counter something so of course he had to go. Holmes had to go. His car ashtray was not emptied. Cedric Wilson tapped a girl friends cheek. Sack this monster. Same with the speedy RB last year. Who is running this team now. Carrie Nation? WTHeck is going on. Are TS now proposing to bring back the Volstead Act. I think that is what they called the drinking prohibition law. I can understand a very strict policy enforcing the league rules but how about checking into these incidents a little more before knee jerk reacting.
Saunders much to my surprise did not set the world on fire at Indy last year. But, I still think he would be the better option here at this time than either Pope or D Johnson. These little things will eventually add up to big things.
What are you talking about?
D. Johnson is a bum. He is a marginal player who is as poor at blocking as he is catching. Will Johnson did more in the first year on the team than DJ did the entire time he was here. Signing DJ is a waste.
David Johnson was actually quite successful as a pass catching TE at Arkansas.
Given that Miller is out for a while, having an inexpensive TE that knows the system isn't the worst signing of all time. The Steelers are not shopping at Prada, they are looking for K-Mart specials.
If Johnson & Paulsen (& potentially a rookie TE) can give the Steelers 20-30 catches before Heath is back to full fitness, they'll have done their job.
hard to forget his whiff in the SB that led to mendys fumble.
great blocker? Ummm, not a chance.

K-Mart specials :) We need to shop at EMPORIO ARMANI and get Tyler in here for a ten TD season:tt1
Forum keeps giving me an error when i try and create a new thread, so I'll just post this one in here for now....

Matt Spaeth was just released. Bring him back on the cheap and it'll be like The Blues Brothers - "We're putting the band back together". And Tomilin can tell the press - "we're on a mission from God!"
David Johnson provides good depth for this team at two positions!! Whats wrong with that?
David Johnson provides good depth for this team at two positions!! Whats wrong with that?
Uhhh...he's not very good at either of those positions!
Really? I thought Will Johnson proved this year that he was a better blocker than David Johnson has ever been at any point in his career.
I posted this info previously. If you look at profootballfocus stats. since DJ didn't play in 2012. Look in 2011 for him. Profootballfocus, this nonbiased entity, who solely relies on unemotional breaking down of tapes, rated David Johnson their 15th best TE (out of 65), basically on the strength of his run blocking. He was given a rating of a 9. Will Johnson, again according to profootballfocus in 2012, was given a rating as a run blocker of -.4.
So, it's not just me trusting my own judgement, which in this instance I think is on target. David Johnson is far more energetic and effective blocker thatn Will Johnson. Plus the running game overall was poor in 2012, and I think Will Johnson's unimpactful blocking was a part of that, as well as some key losses to the offensive line, such Colon and Adams.
So all the hate on DJ is tiresome and childish. It is just morons imitating others morons, trying to be cool.
David is hardworking strong blocker, good teammate. Can catch you a pass, Good depth guy. People don't expend this much effort bashing other depth players.
