We all loved our OL when he was here; among the best in the NFL.

But we have a OL coach, and the two do not seem to inter-mix in philosophies. Meyer has a specific technique, one I do not think Munchak shares.

I find that to be a particularly intriguing addition for Mike Tomlin given the fact that Mike Munchak knows the Steelers culture and is a former head coach. In other words, think of it as a senior offensive assistant much like the same way Teryl Austin and Brian Flores acted when that was their job on the defensive side of the football.

Maybe more as a "general hire" like Flores last year? I don't know. I feel like Munchak would not be able to just chill out watching someone else handle the OL coaching. He is a marvelous OL coach, too bad we can't figure out a way to add him. I am still not sure why he left; not sure I buy is official reason.

If the Steelers had a chance to get that guy back and didnt, then I would agree with every poster who says we lack intelligence from its leaders.

Someone like that you find a place for him.

I am surprised Sean Payton did not reach out to him. I guess he has his own guys.

Munchak is old school. Denver kicked him out because he didn't fit.

He was "old school" in Pgh, he put together an "old school" kick @ss OL. That was "old school" all right.

Much's specialty is the OL, but he is also a former HC. Although he wasn't successful, I am sure he understands the macro approach, working with the various coaches and assistants on a number of factors, communication etc. I would hire him as asst. HC or offensive specialist, or whatever title you want to give him. I think he would be a good set of eyes to have amongst the rest of the coaches.

Why did Munchak leave the Steelers?

Reportedly to be close to family. His daughter (and maybe grandchild?). IIRC anyway

And wasn't their OL play not that good?

Munch was a good coach for the players we had at the time. Who knows if that would be true for the guys we have now.

I think the OL improved a fair amount last season. I don't think major changes are a great idea.

OTOH, LeBeau was still great when we brought him back.

Lebeau was probably the only coach the Steelers rehired.

The Steelers acquire and release players every year in an attempt to improve the team. If a HOF talent becomes available and you have the ability to upgrade at a particular position - you have to take the shot. No reason that mindset shouldn't apply to coaches. Munch is a clear upgrade, has proven results and would improve the O-line performance. That's not to suggest last year wasn't a great job - but this is an upgrade without doubt. Take the opportunity if it comes your way.

I remember you quoting some stats that Munchak's OLs didn't really do all that well.

A good Pennsylvania man, who happens to have a gold jacket. Players reponded to him and our OL was decent under him. I'd make him an offer to him as the assistant OC coach and work with the OL. A talent is out there who want to be a Steeler. You find a spot for such a man.
