Ravens waived him yesterday and he was signed by the Steelers today per NFL Network.

It doesn’t change their draft strategy. They still need a slot guy.

heck, I'd still draft a really good deep receiver if he's the bpa

Boykin has proved nothing, but he's a no-risk signing that may pay off

Put Boykin and Claypool on the outside and DJ in the slot

33 receptions in 3 years. He won't be handed anything without earning it.

Many think he’ll fill Washington’s role. It’s a low risk, cheap, vet signing. I’m good with it.

They need a #1, they have a #2, a big slot, and a couple special teamers.

Dude is 6'4 220.. ran a 4.4 at the combine.. only 25 years old. Seems like we were real high on him coming out of college. Love the signing.

They were high on him coming out of ND. We got a love affair going on with the Domers. Claypool, Boykin, Tuitt

Sounds to me like Boykin is just a poor man’s version of Chase Claypool.

Maybe.. guys with those tangibles arent easy to come by. Trying to think of the last time we had 2 WRs in our corp that were built like Claypool/Boykin.
Boykin was out last year with a hamstring. Let's hope this is the change of scenery he needed to jumpstart his career.

Good depth move with no risk.

Still got to get a WR before Round 4 and probably a couple priority free agents

We’ll see what he has; he may or may not make it out of camp. Can’t hurt to kick his tires.

Also, to get some intel on the Ravens.

I agree.

But some of the sliver lining here is that he had 7 TDs on those 33 receptions. Maybe that's a good thing for us since we didn't have success with a deep threat last season?

Steelers only listen to their Maryland and Virginia scouts. They have Sundays off. Guy went to a Ravens game one Sunday and saw Boykin injured in the press box. Messaged Colbert and the rest is Maryland history.

Always willing to take a shot at a guy with his size and speed considering who was throwing to him.

7 of his 33 receptions went for TDs along with over 14 yards per catch.

Yeah, I think they ate some crab cakes and old bay.

I think the reporters talk about Tomlin eating chicken wings all the time to cover up the fact that he like crab cakes and oysters from MD/VA.

Although, there's also talk that Tomlin likes the Frankenmuth Chicken in MI which is why we're seeing more MI players. I think the back story is KC (Kevin Colbert not the Chiefs) wanted Creed H, but Tomlin accidentally draft Pat when he told someone he wanted some Frankenmuth Chicken and they heard he wanted Frieirmuth. KC (the Chiefs not Colbert) got confused too and accidentally drafted Creed cause someone overheard KC wanted to draft Humphfrey.

Food makes everything a cluster....

A slot guy? They still need a #1....and probably a #2 too. DJ, our best WR is being squirrely, plus has bad hands. Our #2, CC, can't catch a ball if a CB is within 3' of him when the ball arrives. A guy who had one catch last year isn't going to fix much. He had a total of 32 grabs in 2019-2020 combined.

Yea but those 33 receptions account for all 3 seasons he's been in the league. 33 in 3 years. I guess we can check off WR as a need in the draft now.

This is probably how they all start with 2 randos making some goofy stuff up as a joke.

The bigger question is who’s the person that goes and repeats it? And are they repeating cause it’s silly/funny or do they repeat cause they missed the joke?

No, there was a grassy knoll when the Steelers took McFarland out of MD in the 4th, who ended up being super productive....errrrrrrrrrrr, wait, not so much. I meant there was a grassy knoll when they took Brooks, Jr. from MD two picks later who ended up being a really productive pick, errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I mean the Derwin Gray pick made the draft pervious ended up great, also from MD. No, wait, the Terrell Edmunds pick, in the 1st round, from VT, ended up being a prudent pick....oh wait....but Sean Davis taken in the 2nd proved really good, also from MD. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

And, unlike Corner, we do seem to know a thing or two about evaluating WR talent in the draft..

Really good special teamer, really good blocking WR. I think he's a near lock, Steelers value both.

Boykin's problem will be Pickens and Austin. Both are going to be good

Plus Gunner Oz is going to get every chance to be the return specialist

If the rookies look like the real deal, and Boykin flashes….another reason we might want to get value out of CJ before season starts.

has Austin returned kicks in college.

to the point above. I doubt we just stick with a return only guy.
It will come from the 5/6 who make it as receiver or a DB

I liked the Gunner signing when it happened, but is Austin can return maybe he doesn't make the team?

Cap hit for cutting him is just over $1.2M. Not sure if that protects him or not.

WRs under contract

Johnson
Chase
Pickens
Austin III
Boykin
Miller
Gunner
Cody White
Steven Sims
Tyler Snead

You're right that we only kept 5 after final cuts last year. I wonder if there are years where we kept 6?

https://www.steelers.com/news/steelers-53-man-roster

I assume that Miller won't make it after getting lost on the practice squad last season, so I bet you're right that it's Boykin vs. Gunner.

Miles will beat out Gunner by a mile. Great ST, great run blocker, will actually see the field as a WR. Gunner is nothing more than a return specialist.

Gunner had one huge game in 2020 with a 70 and 61 yard PR, outside of that, long of 27. Long KR of 37. We're not getting Devin Hester, I think his fate was sealed when we drafted Austin.

Austin no KRs in college, PR his final 2 years

20 188 9.4
5 135 27.0

Only 5 PR in 2021. Don't know if that was because he was too valuable as a WR or not. On a side note, his WR production his last 2 seasons:

2020 Memphis American JR WR 11 63 1053 16.7 11 2 14 7.0 0 65 1067 16.4 11
2021 Memphis American SR WR 12 74 1149 15.5 8 1 69 69.0 1 75 1218 16.2 9

Well, if Boykin and Gunner both make the team, people had better gird their loins for Pickens or Austin not getting a hat on some game days, especially early in the year. Special teamers get hats and the Steelers aren't going to dress 6 WRs.

CUT CANDIDATES

Miles Boykin

Pittsburgh Steelers · WR

Pittsburgh’s top three receivers are pretty much locked in: Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and rookie George Pickens. It’s a bit unclear how the Steelers will stack the WR depth chart after that, but a spot figures to go to fourth-round rookie Calvin Austin III, who impressed prior to a foot injury (unless he’s placed on IR). There’s also Gunner Olszewski, who has been great this summer (despite a fumble last preseason game) and whose special teams ability will be difficult to replace.

That leaves Boykin in a tricky spot. He’s due to make more than $2.5 million this season, which is a bit rich for a player whose most projectable role might be as a gunner on special teams coverage. It’s a tough call for sure.
