Kordell had his moments. Crazy how some people act like he was trash and we wasted too much time with him at QB.

I was mostly positive on Kordell. He did stuff that basically no one else in the league was doing. But he was maddeningly inconsistent.

He was kind of like the rest of the team at the time. Pretty good, but not quite great. But it was so tantalizing because there were flashes of greatness.

what made you think he would be an all pro WR?

14 receptions his first year
17 receptions his second year.

Its like saying Taysum Hill would be an All Pro RB if he didnt play QB.

No.. those were mostly gadget plays.

led us to 2 AFCCG’s and we kept switching OC’s with him. He was fine for what he was, just wished we embraced his style of play and went RPO back then.

But it was fun to watch before it all fell apart. Still a shame they created the gay rumors about him.

I, too, think he could have been extremely good at WR, or as a WR/RB. He obviously had the tools. I think he could have even been much better than he was at QB, IF they had adjusted the offense to tailor it to his strengths. I'd love to have seen what he could have done in an offense more like what the Ravens run. Instead, he was utilized as though he was a conventional pocket QB.

THAT... When he had Chan Gailey, he excelled. Chan was good and going with what he did best.

Unfortunately, the rest of the league said, "wow, if he's that good, make him a HC" and the team lost Chan. Kordell never was the same...

yup.. lets take a mobile QB and force him to be a pocket passer. That will work out well.

Even still, the guy had more highlights and success than a lot of traditional pocket passers.

I thought Kordell was great. I loved the slash years. He was fun to watch and you never knew when he was going to break a big one.

Agreed. I was pretty disappointed when he said he wouldn't be a "Slash" in the one AFCC. We really needed his flash. It felt like he was quitting on the team.

I remember when Rooney said that Heinz Field was going to be the "House that Kordell built."

Yea, how many SBs did he get us too again? And that was with a top D and rushing game to boot.

Kordell had his moments doesn’t mean he got us to SB’s.

This is the problem with the W’s and the SB or bust mentality.

Chan was his OC when he threw away the AFCC Game. Did it again four years later. Great athlete, couldn't read defenses and wasn't accurate.

If you can't work from the pocket you will eventually get exposed. This should be a cautionary tale for teams high on Willis.

Kordell certainly had his inconsistencies, but I never could figure out why Cowher and CO drafted a QB with his style of play - and then largely refused to design an offense around it choosing to force him to adapt to being a pocket passer who could escape when necessary. Every play should have had him 'escaping' and moving in the backfield. At that time, defenses were not designed to cope with that scheme. It could have been glorious. I don't object to Cowher being in the HOF - but I honestly never quite understood how he got there. Solid win percentage - but too many post season failures. Maybe his peers saw him as someone innovative - but when you had a talent like Kordell and chose NOT to innovate..........I just think that's a rather large indictment on Coach C.

We'll never know of course what could have been, but when Kordell shined - it was wonderful to watch.

Oh, the whole Schenley park smear was disgusting and nauseating. I love Pittsburgh, wouldn't live anywhere else - but the speed upon which that story spread and how it was so easily accepted by so many people is a dark stain upon Steeler fans.

Division titles with O'Donnell, Tomczak, Kordell, Maddox, rookie Ben? As soon as he got his franchise QB he got over the SB hump.

I agree. He was inconsistent, but if they could have found an OC who catered an offensive system to his unique skill set it could have been very fun to watch and way ahead of its time.

A) for all his flaws, you said it there... He was in the AFCC. TWICE. Probably would have had more if Gailey had stayed.
B) Agreed completely on Willis; without the right OC, those guys struggle...

some nice D here..........

Replete with a classic unblocked Jason Gildong sack! I wish PFF had existed back then.

Kirkland, OTOH, was a complete freak of nature.

BTW, the Steelers would lose their next five games to end the season 7-9. In those games, Kordell threw 1 TD and 8 INT and was sacked 13 times.
