CB Burns Set to Rejoin Steelers on 3-Year Deal

Chris Mortensen

In their latest effort to shore up their new-look defensive secondary, the Pittsburgh Steelers are turning to a familiar face. The team is expected to announce the signing of cornerback Artie Burns in the coming days, according to sources close to the team. The reported three-year contract could prove to be worth as much as $24 million, much of which is likely to be tied to playing-time incentives. The deal's $4 million signing bonus all but guarantees Burns will be on the Steelers' 53-man roster in 2022.

The unlikely homecoming appeared to be an impossibility only days ago, when the former first-round pick inked a one-year deal with Seattle on March 18. But his unexpected release from the Seahawks on Thursday -- less than two weeks after they signed him -- paved the way for a reunion with the Steelers, who drafted Burns 25th overall in 2016. Despite starting nine games as a rookie, Burns struggled at times during his first go-around in Pittsburgh, leading coach Mike Tomlin to bench him midway through the 2018 campaign. The team eventually allowed Burns to leave in free agency once his rookie contract expired.

But three years removed from the cornerback's last snap as a Steeler, Tomlin thinks Burns' veteran presence could provide much-needed stability to a unit that figures to be doing some soul-searching following the expected departure of starters Joe Haden and Terrell Edmunds.

"Artie's a great kid, caught some tough breaks with injuries and inexperience over the past few years," Tomlin told reporters. "But we've obviously been following his progress ever since; we've been really impressed by the work he's done the past couple of offseasons, and we think this could be the year it all comes together for him."
