I did not see Smith out there. IIRC he's slightly dinged hammy or groin issue.

Ahh that may be the reason, thanks

I didn't see Smith on the field but I certainly say that other late round linebacker pick, Gilbert. He and Buggs on the defensive line were impressive when they were in.

Smith's stock is dropping due to his inability to get on the field.

Smith being banged up a bit could be a blessing. He could get a red shirt deal , develop n learn the pro game n have a legit shot in 20. We got a few mac guys who r going to be tough to cut.

Smith has gone from pre-training camp highlight to now being in danger of not making the team at all.

From Brain Batkoís (Post-Gazette) weekly mailbag -

Smith has been sidelined for about a week and a half, and the final week and a half of training camp.

Smith told me Thursday morning heís been dealing with an abdominal issue. He said heíll be held out of the second preseason game, too, and when Tomlin was asked if Smith has fallen behind because of his health, the coach gave a simple but harsh answer: ďYes.Ē

Wednesday, Smith was in uniform and still walking through special teams drills at times, working on his punt protection off to the side but in unison with the players in full pads.

ďThereís a lot of stuff I really canít do right now. Ö You just donít want the risk of re-injuring it, really,Ē Smith said. ďIím still going through plays, just watching a little bit more film on my phone or iPad, and just trying to stay tuned-in, mentally. Thatís really the big thing.Ē

Smith expects to return in time for the final two preseason games, at Tennessee and Carolina, but acknowledged that itís ultimately up to Tomlin and the training staff.

I'm betting that Smith get an IR "Redshirt" this season. With Dupree in his final year of his contract, I can't see the Steelers letting him go given they thought highly of him during the draft process. IMO the missing time is just part of the process to let it look good when they IR him

Should be able to get him on the PS is he's hurt all / most of preseason.

Steelers Rookie OLB Sutton Smith Hoping To Make Preseason Debut Against Titans

By Dave Bryan
Posted on August 19, 2019

Itís been a rough last several weeks for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie outside linebacker Sutton Smith as the Northern Illinois product has missed the teamís first two preseason games of 2019 due to an injury. Smith, however, has now reportedly resumed practicing again as of Monday and appears to be on track to make his NFL preseason debut Sunday night against the Tennessee Titans.

ďItís fun that they tease me a bit, but itís true,Ē Smith said Monday about the ribbing he received from his teammates upon him returning to practice, according to Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. ďItís what, my first day back in 17 days? What I had wasnít a minor injury. Itís something big. Iím just blessed that Iím back as quick as I am and ready to play ball.Ē

While Smithís injury that heís dealt with has still yet to be officially revealed, many seem to think it was abdomen related. It really doesnít matter what the injury was at this point, however, it only matters that heís missed quite a bit of training camp practice time along with both preseason games, which he recently admitted would have been beneficial to him as part of his battle to make this yearís 53-man roster.

ďItís frustrating but you canít think about the negativities of being out and being a rookie at the same time because it will eat away at you and put more pressure on you and youíll end up playing worse,Ē Smith said, per Gorman. ďI knew the time was ticking. I didnít really read too much into it. I just knew I had to get back on the field and play fast.Ē

During his Monday post-practice press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked he gets a sense that thereís now more urgency from players now that training camp is over with and the team has begun to practice at their home facility and if thereís anything heís telling those players now when it comes to the clock potentially running out on their chances of making this yearís roster.

ďYou know, when we break camp, man, we come back here and we get in this simulation week man, the opportunities to stake a claim on a position or to carve out a role for yourself is getting scarce,Ē Tomlin said. ďAnd I think everybody understands that.Ē

Tomlin was also asked on Monday if heís close to finalizing this yearís 53-man roster even with two preseason games remaining to be played.

ďOh my gosh, we got two more games to play,Ē Tomlin said. ďSo, you know, Iím just acknowledging that opportunities for them and particularly in terms of things that they need to develop; skills and tools relative to their position. These workdayís out here in preparation for those two opportunities are really getting scarce.Ē

The Steelers third preseason game will take place on the road Sunday night against Titans and even though most of the teamís starters will likely play quite a few snaps in that contest, other backup players currently battling for roster spots could still see considerable amounts of playing time as well. That includes Smith, who figures to play quite a bit Sunday night if healthy enough to do so because of fellow outside linebackers Anthony Chickillo and Olasunkanmi Adeniyi both currently dealing with injuries.

Adeniyi wonít play against the Titans due to him recently having a torn meniscus repaired and Chickillo might sit out that third preseason game as well as heís dealing with a minor chest injury, he suffered this past Saturday night. Smith might play most of the game opposite fellow outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper Sunday night after starters Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt exit the contest. Additionally, and probably more importantly, Smith is likely to play nearly every special teams snap against the Titans. Heck, he might even play a few snaps at fullback at some point against the Titans as well.

As Iíve stated ever since the Steelers selected smith in the sixth-round of this yearís draft, the undersized edge-rusher will need to prove that he can be a core special teams asset during training camp and the preseason if he wants a legitimate shot to make this yearís 53-man roster. Obviously, heís missed the opportunity to show that with two weeks of the preseason over with and thus now he must concentrate on winning the Steelers coaches over in the teamís final two preseason games.

ďThatís the best thing about it: I have two games,Ē Smith said on Monday, per Gorman. ďIt would be bad if I only had one game. But I have half the games. I think itís a blessing that Iíve come back this fast from what I had. Itís going to be fun. I have two games. Thatís more than enough film to show what I can do.Ē

You can bet weíll be watching and tracking every snap that Smith plays Sunday night against the Titans and a week from Thursday against the Carolina Panthers. At worst, perhaps Smith can show enough in these two final preseason games to warrant the team signing him to their practice squad.
