Former Texas WR Limas Sweed sues NCAA, citing concussions, report says
Sweed, 34, was a wide receiver for the Longhorns from 2003-07 and was part of the Texas team that won the BCS National Championship in the 2005 Rose Bowl against Michigan.
In his suit seeking more than $5 million, Sweed claims that while playing at Texas he suffered "numerous concussions, as well as countless sub-concussive hits as part of routine practice and gameplay."
As a result, he says he now suffers from depression, headaches, memory loss, mood swings, emotional instability, motor impairment and more.
Sweed claims his pain is a "direct and proximate result of [the NCAA's] negligence."
After finishing with almost 2,000 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns at Texas, Sweed was chosen by the Steelers in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft and was part of a Super Bowl-winning team his rookie year.
He played in 20 games over two NFL seasons but suffered a torn Achilles in May 2010, missed that entire season and eventually was released. He retired after two brief stints in the CFL.
