Steelers hire Teryl Austin as assistant on defense

Teryl Austin is getting a second chance in the AFC North.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Steelers are hiring Teryl Austin as a “senior defensive assistant with a focus on the secondary.“

Austin was fired by the Bengals in midseason, a bad first impression in his first year with the team. The Bengals were on pace to break a league record for yards allowed in a season when Marvin Lewis decided to make the change.

Prior to the Bengals, Austin spent four years as the Lions defensive coordinator.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin suggested changes were coming, including the possibility of adding numbers to his staff. Bringing Austin in with a non-standard tile seems to check both boxes.

The Steelers continue to make changes to their coaching staff with the hiring of Teryl Austin. Austin will serve in the new role of senior defensive assistant/secondary.

Austin comes to the Steelers with a wealth of NFL experience, having coached in the league for 15 seasons.

He began his career as a defensive backs/secondary coach with the Seattle Seahawks (2003-06), Arizona Cardinals (2007-09) and Baltimore Ravens (2011-13).

He took over as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2014 and was there for four seasons, before becoming the Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator in 2018.

Austin has strong ties to the Pittsburgh area. He is a native of Sharon, Pa. and played at the University of Pittsburgh (1983-87), where he earned his degree in communications.

He played in the World League of American Football for one season (1991) with the Montreal Machine, before starting a coaching career in college football. He was a graduate assistant at Penn State, and spent time on the defensive coaching staffs of Wake Forest, Syracuse, Michigan and Florida.

Steelers have hired Teryl Austin as a senior defensive assistant/secondary. Former Bengals and Lions defensive coordinator was on the head coaching circuit not long ago. Will help Steelers' growing subpackage football.

Can't hurt. I think Bradley is over his he'd teaching Pros. Good college coach but no success metrics in the NFL. The fact we couldn't intercept a pass last year with all the QB pressures we had should had been enough to send Bradley out the door

Last year Cincy D sucked, I don't know if it had to do with injuries, lack of talent, coordination, scheme, or even management between HC Lewis and of the assistance coaches.

Maybe he is a good coach, but just set up to fail in Cincy, or just sucked at managing and coordinating. The hiring of Teryl can not be really seen as a negative, since we never had this position before, but more as a positive, knowing we need help on coaching the D especially our DBS.
