Antonio Brown having tests on knee

Posted by Josh Alper on December 28, 2018, 1:01 PM EST

Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown missed his second practice of the week on Thursday, but the stated reason for his absence was different than why he sat on Wednesday.

Brown was listed as out due to coach’s decision on Wednesday, which indicated he was taking a rest day before facing the Bengals on Sunday. Thursday’s listing was a knee issue and word was that he was dealing with soreness.

There were further developments on Friday and they weren’t positive. Brown remained out of practice and, per multiple reporters, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the wideout is undergoing tests on his knee.

Tomlin said that Brown has not been ruled out due to the lack of time on the practice field, but didn’t give an indication as to the likelihood that he could miss the game.

If he does, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Eli Rogers, James Washington and Ryan Switzer would lead the way at wideout against the Bengals. The Steelers need a win and a Ravens loss to advance to the postseason.

Report: Steelers not optimistic Antonio Brown can play
By Michael David Smith | Dec 30, 2018, 5:55 AM EST

The Steelers may be without wide receiver Antonio Brown today against the Bengals.

Brown is listed as questionable, and the team is not optimistic that he can play, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Although Brown will test the knee in pregame, he apparently hasn’t been doing well when trying to go in practice this week.

Steelers running back James Conner is also questionable, but indications have been that his injured ankle is doing better and he’s expected to play.

Assuming there are no ties among AFC playoff contenders today, the Steelers need a win and a Ravens loss to reach the playoffs.

Antonio Brown is “feeling better” and “has a chance” to play

The Steelers’ playoff hopes hinge on beating the Bengals, and getting help. They’re hoping that they’ll get help in beating the Bengals from star receiver Antonio Brown.

Although the Steelers reportedly aren’t optimistic about Brown’s ability to play with a knee injury, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Brown is “doing his best” to play, and that he’ll test the knee during pregame warmups. Per the source, Brown is “feeling better today” and “has a chance” to play.

At a minimum, the Steelers should consider using Brown as a decoy. Even if the Bengals figure out after a drive or two that Brown can’t do what he usually does, his presence (and the attention he attracts) could help the offense score a touchdown or two.

Then again, if the Steelers can’t beat the Bengals without Brown when the Bengals are playing for nothing and the Steelers are playing for everything, maybe the Steelers don’t deserve anything beyond the season ending today and everyone going home.

Report: Steelers players think Antonio Brown wasn’t injured

Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2019, 5:45 PM EST

Antonio Brown‘s teammates aren’t as trusting as his coach.

On the same day that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters he has no question to doubt the veracity of Brown’s claim that he had a knee injury last week, multiple unnamed Steelers players tell Aditi Kinkhabwala that they don’t believe Brown was injured. Which means that they think Brown quit on the team, days before a de facto playoff game.

That doesn’t bode well for Brown’s future with the team. If he has lost the locker room, there’s no reason to bring him back.

But there’s also no reason for the Steelers to publicly acknowledge this dynamic; if it appears that the Steelers have reached the point of no return with Brown, the Steelers may have a hard time maximizing their return if/when trade talks happen.

The evidence suggests that Brown wasn’t injured. During Tomlin’s press conference, he carefully glossed over the question of whether Brown participated in practice last Wednesday despite being injured, the question of whether Brown stormed out, and the question of whether Brown showed up last Thursday. Tomlin nevertheless was candid regarding the fact that Brown, when directed on Friday to get an MRI on his knee, didn’t — and regarding the fact that lack of communication from Friday to Sunday became one of the main reasons for Brown’s failure to play.

Apart from ensuring trade leverage, Tomlin has no reason to admit that Brown wasn’t injured, given that the Steelers placed him on the injury report and blamed his failure to play on the injury. The Steelers need to tread lightly on this; if they admit Brown wasn’t injured, they’ll face some sort of discipline from the league.

Unless, of course, the league decides to look the other way, since it’s the Steelers not the Patriots.

perhaps they should just do away with MVP awards.. because of the emotional distress and anxiety endured by those players who didnt receive the award.. maybe just give them all a damned participation trophy
