Cam Jordan says he wouldn't rank Big Ben among top 5 QBs of this era

ESPN Staff Writer

METAIRIE, La. -- Outspoken New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan argued against Ben Roethlisberger's case as a future Hall of Famer on Wednesday, saying he wouldn't rank the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback among the top five of his generation.

The Saints host Pittsburgh on Sunday.

"Is that true?" Jordan responded when a reporter suggested that Roethlisberger might be a future Hall of Famer. Then he gave an exaggerated, "Reeeaaally?"

"In this era? You'd put him at like a top three of this era? You'd put him in the top five of this era?" Jordan continued, before listing Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning as top quarterbacks during Roethlisberger's 15-year career.

"You're saying he's better than Philip Rivers, career-wise? So you're giving him the Super Bowl nod?" Jordan said. "You're putting him at No. 5? OK. ... I'd honestly put Eli (Manning) before I'd put Ben, but OK. Two Super Bowls -- if we're going by those numbers."

Roethlisberger's Hall of Fame case is stronger than Jordan suggests. Not only does he have two Super Bowl wins and three Super Bowl appearances, but he ranks third in regular-season wins since he entered the NFL in 2004 with 143 -- just one behind Brees' 144 wins (and well behind Brady's 171).

Roethlisberger also ranks sixth in NFL history with 55,527 passing yards (behind Brees, Peyton Manning and Favre and just barely ahead of fellow 2004 rookies Eli Manning and Rivers). Roethlisberger ranks seventh in NFL history with 359 regular-season touchdown passes (behind Peyton Manning, Brees, Brady and Rivers; just ahead of Eli Manning).

Jordan is never afraid to stir a little controversy, though. He often refers to specific offensive tackles as "speed bumps," among other jabs. And he has enjoyed a well-publicized trash-talking back and forth with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton over the past two years that hit its peak when Jordan mailed Newton a bottle of Jordan-brand wine (no relation) to celebrate the Saints' three-game sweep of the Panthers last year.

Jordan, however, insisted that he wasn't the one who sent Newton a broom.

Ben Roethlisberger: Career Ranks

The Saints' Cameron Jordan said Wednesday that he wouldn't put Ben Roethlisberger in the top five QBs of his era. At least based on wins, pass yards and touchdown passes, Roethlisberger ranks in the top five in each category since his rookie season in 2004.

NFL Rank

QB wins 143 3rd
Pass yards 55,527 3rd
Pass TD 359 5th

Saints’ Cam Jordan not buying Ben Roethlisberger as a Hall of Famer

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 20, 2018, 3:41 PM EST

Is Sunday’s Steelers-Saints game a matchup of two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks? Not according to Saints defensive end Cam Jordan, who disputed the idea that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is heading to Canton.

As Jordan was being interviewed in the Saints’ locker room, he was asked about facing “a quarterback who might be going to the Hall of Fame,” meaning Roethlisberger, on Sunday. Jordan immediately put a skeptical look on his face.

“Is that true? Really?” Jordan asked. “You’d put him at Top 5 of this era?”

Jordan said the top quarterbacks of the current era are Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning, and he doesn’t think Roethlisberger measures up. Jordan then indicated he doesn’t think Roethlisberger deserves to be ahead of Philip Rivers, and added, “I’d honestly put Eli before I’d put Ben.”

The video of Jordan’s comments seems to have disappeared from the Saints’ website, but it lives on Twitter, and it’s clear from Jordan’s tone and expressions that he thinks naming Roethlisberger as a future Hall of Famer is incorrect. Roethlisberger will get the chance to prove himself to Jordan on Sunday.

In a twist, no one is questioning Cam Jordon’s HOF credentials.... because they are non existent. F him.

I get that it was a spur of the moment comment, but what would possess this dude to elaborate on the point so much? Unless there is some kind of tainted history, you don't disrespect any opponent like that before you play them...but especially when said opponent is in fact a hall of famer. His comments are not only hard to back up, I'm pretty sure they just added a little giddy-up to Ben's step.

I hope Jordan hears that tossed back him all game long from all the Steeler players and then has to get asked if he still feels the same way about Ben by reporters after the game.

Not smart on multiple levels.

He also ranked Eli Manning ahead of Ben, hard to take anything he says seriously.

I love when people say dumb things. Jordan should stomp on the Terrible Towel next to guarantee a Steelers win.

I’m looking forward to Sunday.

Steelers, Roethlisberger shock Jaguars with epic comeback

In August, cornerback Jalen Ramsey -- owner of two interceptions Sunday -- called Roethlisberger "decent at best" in a GQ interview, noting he "ain't all that" because Antonio Brown makes the offense go.

Before the offense got hot Sunday, Roethlisberger got a mouthful from linebacker Telvin Smith.

"They have a linebacker, No. 50 -- we'll just use numbers, we won't have to say names -- that wanted to let me know every time I threw an interception," Roethlisberger said. "He found me, and told me how many interceptions I threw. It was a little motivation to come back and win the game. "

Roethlisberger was 11-of-24 for 66 yards through the game's first 44 minutes but finished with 314 yards as the Steelers offense went no-huddle attack.

A 25-yard pass to Brown over the middle got the Steelers to the 2-yard line in the final minute. From there, Roethlisberger spiked the ball to stop the clock. The Jaguars committed a face mask penalty in coverage on a passing play. Roethlisberger threw an incompletion. Finally, with 8 seconds left, Roethlisberger rolled to his right on a shovel play and stretched for the goal line when his passing options were covered. The nose of the football barely crossed the goal line.

Roethlisberger said he didn't get a chance to talk with Ramsey after the game, but he completed 5-of-6 passes in the fourth quarter when Ramsey was the nearest defender, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Our OL loves Ben. If any of them get a shot at Jordan at the bottom of a pile, I don't doubt that Villanueva, Foster, Pouncey, DeCastro, or Feiler would all be willing to give him a little extra business down where the refs can't see. Guard your nards, Cammy.
