If he is, he won't just be outright cut. They'll likely just say something like he hurt himself on the final banana peel slip, put him on I.R., bring in a new kicker for the rest of this season, and have Boswell compete with some other kicker in training camp in Latrobe next summer.

Boswell will not be competing at Latrobe. He has a roster bonus of $2M which probably kicks in if he is on the roster March 1 (not sure the date but definitely prior to camp).

He is either gone after the season or he is the kicker in 2019. No way the team pays him $2M and then cuts him.

It isn't a question of just putting the blame on one person, and it being Boz. It comes down to the ability to replace somebody without there being a learning curve. Being able to utilize that player's full skillset without skipping a beat. Only a kicker or punter gives you that.

This is a tough decision, last year he easily "won" 4 games for us, this year he "lost" 3 games for us. I just don't get it, even if we replace him, are we going to have confidence in the new kicker? How many times during this season did we tell ourselves that he is over his "funk".

The credit and blame doesn't fall on just one play or player through a course of a game. Example, what if we Tomlin did call a time-out, and we had another 30 seconds on the clock. After Juju's hook and lateral play, how much time was still on the clock? 20sec? That is enough for 2 plays to win the game with a TD no tie the score to go into OT.

What if we stopped them on that 4 and 4-6 play to take the lead...

Kai Forbath had a strong kicking workout with the Steelers and the team is keeping him on hold while they figure out Chris Boswell's situation. Thursday's practice could be big for Boswell.

Last year I could leave the room after a TD and know that there is 7 on the board when I get back. This year you have to start holding your breath as soon as the ball crosses the goal line, and only let it out after the extra point has been kicked.

I'm curious how simulate game situation pressure in practice? That's when the rubber meets the road. Fifty yarder into the open end of the stadium, points before the half, 4th quarter FGs, game winning FGs are all a little different live than in practice.

Steelers bringing in Shaun Suisham to work with Chris Boswell

Posted by Mike Florio on December 13, 2018, 1:58 PM EST

The Steelers need help at kicker. But instead of signing a new one, they’re bringing back an old one.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers will bring in former kicker Shaun Suisham to work with current kicker Chris Boswell.

Suisham spent five seasons with the Steelers, from 2010 through 2014. The 36-year-old has been out of the NFL since then.

The Steelers have opted to stick with Boswell, who in August signed a contract through 2022, after working out Kai Forbath and Matt McCrane earlier this week.

Boswell has had a rough year. He has missed six field goals and five extra points. Most recently, he slipped and fell while attempting a 40-yard field goal that would have forced overtime at Oakland.

If we're re-rolling the bad plays, we should probably re-roll the good ones too. I doubt we call the hook and ladder if we had more time on the clock because it's only something you do when you have almost no chance of winning.

Before hiring Danny Smith as our sole special teams coordinator in 2013, we've used 2 special teams coaches during the Tomlin era (Bob Ligashesky and Amos Jones 2007-2009 and Al Everest and Amos Jones 2010-2012).

It's not unusual to have multiple coaches splitting duties at different positions. We also have two LB coaches now (Joey Porter and Jerry Olsavsky) and two OL coaches as well (Mike Munchak and Shaun Sarrett). Even though Karl Dunbar is officially the DL coach and assistant head coach John Mitchell has moved on to performing more staff development type of duties, I'm sure Mitchell also has been helping Dunbar a bunch during this transition year.

I read on the PFT today that they are bringing in Shaun Suisham to work with him.

It got me to thinking...given how flaky kickers are perhaps the Steelers should have a kicking coach who used to be a kicker similar to how teams utilize a QB coach. Honestly, they are such head cases that perhaps the only person who can reach them is a former "one of them".

And not leave it to a Special Teams coach.

Just a thought...

Everytime I think of Sushi, I remember when he first came to Pittsburgh. A friend of mine, who is a Cowboys fan, told me how much we would hate him. He said he was awful and the Steelers would be looking for a kicker again soon. For the first year or so I was on the edge of my seat always waiting for the miss. It was awhile before I felt the kind of comfort that we had with Reed. We then went through that rough patch again with Scobee until the unknown Boz arrived. dude was so money before this season.

Similar to how teams have an OC, but often also have a QB coach who is a former QB himself.

Chris Boswell: Working with Shaun Suisham a step in the right direction

Posted by Josh Alper on December 14, 2018, 10:57 AM EST

The Steelers reached out to former kicker Shaun Suisham this week as they tried to fix what’s wrong with current kicker Chris Boswell and the two men worked together at practice on Thursday.

Boswell missed two field goals against the Raiders in last Sunday’s loss and he’s up to 11 missed kicks overall this season, which is not what the Steelers expected when they signed Boswell to a contract extension before the season. They spent time looking at other kickers this week, but didn’t sign anyone before Suisham came in to mentor Boswell.

Boswell called the session with his predecessor “a step in the right direction.”

“It’s just good to have another kicker out there, throwing ideas off each other,” Boswell said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He was in the league for 11 years, so it’s always good to have a guy like that around watching. It’s good to have a guy of his caliber.”

Boswell can show what he picked up from Suisham when the Steelers host the Patriots on Sunday.

Jaguars sign Kai Forbath

Posted by Josh Alper on December 14, 2018, 12:26 PM EST

Kai Forbath was in Pittsburgh for a workout earlier this week, but if he plays on Sunday it won’t be for the Steelers.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Forbath signed with the Jaguars on Friday. Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo was added to the injury report on Thursday with a groin injury that limited his practice participation, but has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Washington at this point.

Caleb Sturgis and Marshall Koehn also visited the Jaguars before they signed Forbath.

Forbath spent last season with the Vikings and made 32-of-38 field goals and 34-of-39 extra points. He was released over the summer as the Vikings gave the kicking job to fifth-round pick Daniel Carlson, although Carlson is now with the Raiders after the Vikings dropped him in favor of Dan Bailey.

I would never waste a draft pick on a kicker. They’re easily replaceable.

I still have confidence that Boz can straighten out his issues. I’d give him the offseason but also bring in someone to camp as a backup plan.

Sometimes it definitely isnt a waste because they definitely arent always easy to replace.

Sucks when you have someone like aguayo who is DAZZLING in college just flop after being drafted very high. But having a kicker that can be extremely reliable and one that can hit not only all the distances but all the situations is one of the most important parts of your team.

Id have a very hard time using a pick before the 4th round, and using a 4th round they better be elite but a kicker or punter in rounds 5-7 is fine if they are the talent you expect. Kickers obvious, but punters even have to check a few boxes on how you as a team wants to punt. Do you want a guy that has a full arsenal of kicks or a guy that can consistently bomb it high in the air and not allow a return at 47-48 yards.

I loved the Dan Sepulveda pick years ago...he battled some bad injuries but he was a great punting prospect. There were actually like 7 punters and kickers drafted that year haha. Greg the Leg and Blair Walsh were another great year for kickers (walsh since flamed out as many kickers do eventually but he had a year where he was like 10/10 from 50+).

All that said, ive always been a big boswell fan because how could you not? After suisham getting hurt and scobee being a disaster he was a wonderful gift. Ill never forget ben asking him what hash mark he wanted and he said "i dont care". I do believe he can get it back, but each missed kick from here out is going to make it more difficult to get out of that mental block. If theres water for me to hit a golf ball in, i find it. Its not that i cant elevate a ball or get it far enough but i have a real mental block about hitting over water....which is about how i imagine he feels right now

Chris Boswell deletes his Twitter account after another missed field goal
By Michael David Smith | Dec 17, 2018, 5:46 PM EST

Steelers kicker Chris Boswell is struggling through a rough season, and when players are struggling, they often take abuse on social media. So Boswell has decided to bow out.

Boswell deleted his Twitter account, on which he had been posting @WizardOfBoz09, some time on Sunday night, after missing another field goal in Pittsburgh’s win over the Patriots.

Although Boswell was praised by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin after the game for shaking off his 32-yard miss and then making one from 48 yards late in the fourth quarter, he likely calculated that he just didn’t want to know what fans had to say on social media afterward.

It’s hard to blame him. A search of his name makes it easy to find many tweets in which people directed ugly, abusive language toward him. There ought to be no place for that anywhere, but unfortunately, if you want to avoid that kind of abuse, sometimes your only choice is to get off Twitter altogether.

Embattled kicker Chris Boswell said coach Mike Tomlin told him after his 32-yard miss to keep his head up because he's going right back to him. He did just that on fourth-and-6 with 2:41 left and Pittsburgh up 14-10. “I made that decision when I walked into the stadium with him that he was our kicker and I wasn't going to play that second-guessing game today,” Tomlin said.

Smith explains Suisham's visit with Boswell

Teresa Varley

Steelers.com

Sometimes all it takes is a different voice. A voice who has been there, done that.

And for Chris Boswell, that voice was former Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham.

The Steelers brought Suisham to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex last week to work with Boswell, who has had his struggles this season. Going into last week’s game against the Patriots he had missed six field goals, including two against the Oakland Raiders, and five extra points. The team even brought in two kickers to compete with him for his roster spot, with Boswell eventually winning the competition.

Special teams coordinator Danny Smith, who coached Suisham too, reached out to him to see if he would be willing to help Boswell. He never hesitated. Suisham didn’t come in to ‘coach’ Boswell, rather to talk to him, work with him and offer some advice. Smith offered a breakdown of how the whole scenario took place.

“People wonder about those things all of the time,” said Smith. “All of these kickers have kicking coaches. Just like everybody has a strength coach and everybody’s got a conditioning guy. That is the world we live in.

“I called Shaun on the way home one night because Shaun knows me and I know Shaun. Shaun and I were in a similar situation together, an exact situation together. His experience affected me. A kicker to kicker kind of thing. I called Shaun and asked him what he was doing. We were talking. We talk quite often. We got specific about kicking and techniques and situations like that. I told him I might call you in the next couple of days, are you going to be in town. He said yes. That was it. I know him, he knows me. We speak the same language. I coached him.

“I bounced it off Mike Tomlin, what do you think about Shaun coming by. He said I think it’s a great idea. The next couple of nights I called Shaun told him this is what I want to do. He and I have been through the exact situation. I had him come in at a specific time, we watched some film, and just was another voice. When a kicker talks to a kicker, they speak a different language. It’s not good, bad, right, or wrong. It’s a process.

“It was a good thing to do. Shaun is awesome. I think it was excellent. Shaun did a great job doing what we asked him to do. It’s not coaching. It’s a friendly voice that has had some more experience. We all look for that when we are struggling. I thought it was a good thing to do and I am glad we did it. Hopefully the results continue to improve.”

Against the Patriots Boswell missed a 32-yard field goal wide right, but came back at a crucial time in the game and hit a 48-yard field goal, giving the Steelers a 17-10 lead they would hold on to.

Smith doesn’t anticipate having Suisham come back, hoping that the initial visit did the trick.

“He has had the same experience. They can relate,” said Smith. “They have been there in that heat. It was spur of the moment. The right guy in the right situation. A guy we know. He is a Steeler and wants us to be successful as anybody in the city.”
