Sheesh Cleveland. I’m an OSU alum and I don’t even think Ward was worthy of the #4 pick. I thought edge rusher but CB was also a need.

But many thought they would try to improve rushing the QB. If you look at the Jags model, having stud secondary can win a lot of games.

What...!!!

RuthlessBurgher
04-26-2018, 09:43 PM
The Ravens have the opportunity to draft either Tremaine Edmunds or Derwin James now (depending on what the Raiders do). That sucks. C'mon Ozzie...in your last draft as GM, reach for one of your Tide guys instead. A need pick like Calvin Ridley instead of BPA.

NorthCoast

was he a projected 1st?this is what walterfootball has to say:

TTerrell Edmunds*, S, Virginia Tech
Height: 6-0. Weight: 217. Arm: 32.75. Hand: 10.5.
40 Time: 4.47.
Projected Round (2018): 1-3.
4/25/18: Some team sources tell me they think that Edmunds is a very underrated prospect and have him as a high second-rounder. Others have him late in Round 2 or early in Round 3.

Edmunds hasn't gotten as much attention as his brother Tremaine Edmunds, but NFL sources have told WalterFootball.com that Terrell Edmunds really impressed them as well. Edmunds has good size to be an NFL safety and displayed coverage skills the past few seasons. Edmunds played well in 2017 with 59 tackles, two interceptions and four passes broken up. As a sophomore, he totaled 89 tackles, four interceptions and three passes broken up. Sources say they see Terrell Edmunds grading out as a second-day prospect for the 2018 NFL Draft. He had a strong combine performance to help himself.

In pass coverage, Edmunds is a talented player. Edmunds shows an impressive ability to run with receivers downfield and maintain close coverage. Few defenders with a strong safety build can run with receivers like Edmunds can. He lines up against slot receivers and runs the route while also running with them downfield. In zone coverage, Edmunds covers a lot of ground and picks up targets coming into his area. He breaks on the ball quickly and tracks it well downfield. Edmunds has ball skills to break passes up and intercept the ball. Occasionally, Edmunds can take some missed steps in coverage and is stiff. Thus, he's better off as a strong safety but that can contribute in coverage.

Hilton and Edmunds both come in for dime packages. Hilton the slot corner in standard nickel. Edmunds the hybrid SS/ILB type for a "big nickel" package.

We can cut J.J. Wilcox now, and with the money saved there plus trading Bryant's contract, we can sign Dez Bryant to a one year deal to improve our red zone efficiency.

I’m uncomfortable with the pick because Colbert hasn’t hit on a good secondary player since Troy retired. Colbert has a proven track record of basically missing ion secondary players and I just wish he’d have taken other positions that he’s better at evaluating.

Well, I just hope he hits on tomorrow’s 3 picks.

FACT ONE- Colbert has NEVER EVER missed on a 1st round safety-
FACT TWO- Every first round safety he has EVER drafted was voted 1st team All pro MULTIPLE TIMES
FACT THREE- Every safety Colbert has drafted in the first round is hall of fame bound.

The WORST 1st round safety Colbert drafted, is better than the best 1st round safety in the entire "pre-Colbert" history of the Steelers. :)

STOP!!!

Stop with the Troy stuff! We all know of him but the fact remains Troy was a can’t miss prospect we traded up to get!!

Edmonds is not in Troy’s zip code in being as instinctual or play recognition. Troy was a can’t miss player!

Every secondary player taken by Colbert since has not panned out to be good regardless of where he was taken. Clearly, clearly Colbert’s weakest area of drafting is in the secondary without a doubt.

I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt on Edmonds right now but there is no doubt to anyone who’s watched Colbert’s drafts that Edmonds is Colbert’s biggest first round “ reach” pick ever. EVER!!

So please stop trying to use the trading up and drafting of one can’t miss player (Troy) to gloss over the countless number of misses he’s had since in the secondary.

Slapstick
04-27-2018, 10:37 AM
So, the Steelers should just never, ever draft players for the defensive secondary?

We should just pick wide receivers every round?

Our defensive secondary is akin to our offensive line...once the team devoted resources to the OL in the form of premium draft picks (with other guys who could play sprinkled in) and the right coach, the OL became regarded as a strength...but, it took a few seasons...

Now, the team is devoting resources to the defensive backfield...they've signed a quality free agent, found an undrafted guy who can play, and used premium draft picks...they've hired a new coach who is hopefully the right one...there is no immediate way to fix an entire defensive position group...
