Steelers getting new throwback uniforms this year

Posted by Darin Gantt on February 15, 2018, 6:09 AM EST

The bumblebees are gone, and they’re not coming back.

During a conference call with fans Wednesday, Steelers owner Art Rooney II said the team was ditching one of the worst ideas in alternate jerseys the league has seen (at least this side of Jacksonville).

“We are going to be wearing a new throwback jersey,” Rooney said, via Adam Bittner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Rooney didn’t specify what they were going to throw back to (they’re the Steelers, their regular uniforms are throwbacks anyway).

The Steelers last donned the striped jerseys (which the team wore a version of in the 1930s) in 2016. And while they’ve used some different designs in the past, there aren’t that many options which could lead them back to the “Batman” look from 1966 and 1967.

The Steelers changed to their current, classic look in the late 1960s.

The Steelers have a new throwback jersey that will likely replace the bumblebee look they've used in previous years. The team will unveil the jersey, which will be worn during the 2018 season, on May 30 at 2:30 p.m. on its various social media platforms.

I think these are the coolest ones they could go with but in "66, '67, and '68 the never had a winning record wearing them (if you put stock in that sort of thing).

Yeah, I predict the ol' Batman unis this time.

Considering this jersey is now on sale at Steelers.com, I would have to agree:

I would also imagine there is no need to envision the white "away" uniform design either.

I may be way off, but my general impression is that we had a pretty good record in the BumbleBees.

I hope we have an even better one in the Batmans!

(Maybe this is the year we can bring the Steelerettes back, they can all dress up as Catwomen).

I think our color rush all black look with the blocked-numbers is the best unis we have and wish it is permanent home jersey. Clean, crisp and intimidating.

A jersey filled with history

Teresa Varley

They are clean.

They are sharp.

They are classic.

And they hold a lot of history. Winning history that is.

The Steelers unveiled their Throwback Jersey on Wednesday at a press conference at Heinz Field, and if the goal was to wear something filled with good vibes, mission accomplished.

The team will wear jerseys with block numbers and letters when they host the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 28 at Heinz Field, a throwback to the 1978 and 1979 seasons when the Steelers won Super Bowl XIII and XIV. With the team set to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Super Bowl XIII this year, the third of four won during the 70s, the timing is perfect.

“We are coming up on the 40th Anniversary of Super Bowl XIII and next year will be the 40th anniversary of Super Bowl XIV, so we thought it was a good time to celebrate those teams and those years by bringing back that jersey and that uniform,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “We’re excited about being able to celebrate what was a great time in Steelers history and celebrate those teams.”

The block number jerseys were among the most popular ones in team history, and with the success the Steelers had while wearing them, you can’t go wrong.

“I think our fans even today, even some that weren’t born back then, they understand the history,” said Rooney. “Celebrating those years and championships, and certainly those players that were part of those years, will be a fun time for all of our fans to remember one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history. It will be fun to get a lot of those players back to help us celebrate.”

Franco Harris, who wore the jersey proudly while winning Super Bowls, loves the fact that the team will be honoring and celebrating that time in team history.

“There is always that connection with Steelers team,” said Harris. “We always make sure that spirit is connected. To have this jersey be a part of it, it makes us feel good that there is a connection to our history, what it means. They say the standard is the standard. This is what we stand for.”

“It shows the history of the Steelers,” said Pouncey. “To bring back the old school fashion and make it a new school thing is really enjoyable and I like it a lot.”

It’s a dream come true. This should be their permanent jerseys, not just throwbacks. The block numbers are back!

I've always said the block numbers from the 70's are THE only throwback worth putting on. Timeless, classic and awesome.

Now if we could just wear them at our next superbowl appearance!!

If only those uniforms could bring back some steel curtain to our defense.

A few seasons ago, when the Pens' throwback unis harkened back to their glory days of Black and "Pittsburgh Gold" the fans loved them so much that the team made the permanent switch away from their Black and "Vegas Gold" look at that time. Hopefully, if enough fans make noise about the love for the block number look, we switch back permanently as well.

One can hope. I don’t know why but the block numbers seem to “complete” the jersey. Damn they look sharp!

I really like these jerseys and think they should be our standard jersey.

But, I think that they aren't a good choice for a throwback because they are almost identical to the current jersey. I think that the majority of NFL fans (including casual Steelers fans) wouldn't realize these are throwback jerseys unless someone told them. I hated the "bumblebee" jerseys, but they didn't have that problem.

In a "perfect world", I think these are the regular jersey and the "batwing" jersey is the throwback.
