Doran Grant among cuts as Steelers get to 53 players

The Steelers traded for Browns 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert on Saturday and his arrival may have helped push a cornerback the Steelers drafted last year off the roster.

Doran Grant, a 2015 fourth-round pick, was one of the cuts announced by the team as they set their initial 53-man roster. Grant didn’t make the Steelers out of camp last year either, but returned to their practice squad and eventually moved into the lineup for three games during the regular season.

Another return may be in the offing as the Steelers may place cornerback Senquez Golson on injured reserve on Sunday. Golson has a Lisfranc injury and teams must wait until after the cut to 53 to put players on I.R. if they want to designate them for return later in the season.

The Steelers also waived a member of this year’s draft class when they parted ways with seventh-round wide receiver DeMarcus Ayers. Running back Le’Veon Bell is headed to the reserve/suspended list and tight end Paul Lang was waived/injured.

The other cuts are linebackers Travis Feeney, Steven Johnson and Jermauria Rasco; quarterback Bryn Renner; safety Ray Vinopal; cornerbacks Montell Garner, Al-Hajj Shabazz and Donald Washington; offensive linemen Shahbaz Ahmed, Antoine Everett, Matt Feiler and Wade Hansen; defensive linemen Lavon Hooks, Caushaud Lyons and Johnny Maxey; wide receivers Cobi Hamilton and Marcus Tucker and running backs Brandon Brown-Dukes and Cameron Stingily.

That strategy sounds familiar...

Glad Fort n Matakevich made it. Their special team play got them the nod over Johnson.

Sucks for Grant, but Golson has to be on the initial 53 for him to be eligible to return...

Like a number of people, I'm really glad to see Matakevich make the team. I'm also happy for Dangerfield - he's waited a long time to make an NFL roster. I'd imagine that the Steelers are looking hard at the OT and TE cuts, and maybe also looking for another corner.

Happy for Dangerfield too. I didn't know if the team would give him the respect.

Who would be the fourth tackle? I see Villanueva, Gilbert, and Harris. There will be some serious scouring of the waiver wire if that is it. What would happen at this point? Foster move outside and a backup guard replaces him? Can Hubbard or Finney play OT if needed?

That concerned me as well before the final cuts were made (after preseason game #3 when Gilbert hurt his elbow).

Although, when I looked at this, it shows that they entered last season with only 8 OL and only one is a backup T.

Looks like Hubbard is the tackle in case of emergency.

They might bring Grant back after putting Golson on IR...

Grants a Bill now, so that won't play out.

Maybe they won't be putting Golson on IR at all...in spite of the early lis franc diagnoses, perhaps it is not as bad as we think and he comes back in a month or so, Ladarius Green comes off PUP in 6 weeks or so, Bud Dupree comes off IR in 2 months or so (plus Le'Veon Bell comes off suspension in 3 weeks), and all is right with the Steelers again (except for Martavis Bryant, of course).

Essentially, Doran Grant is the "player to be named later" in a corner swap with Buffalo for Ross Cockrell.
