Predictions since it's early yet today?

I'd like to see the Steelers give Jonathon Banks a try.

I know it was the last round but David Cobb is interesting. Tomlin hasnt dipped into the gopher pool in a while

As of tonight here's a couple names that make me interested:

Cyril Richardson, OG (Could be stashed on the practice squad)
Sterling Moore, CB (Would prefer Banks over Moore...but if it comes down to it, can take him)
Brandon Tate, WR (IF the Steelers needed another wide receiver..Tate could be an upgrade over Rogers..even though Rogers deserve to be on the squad)
Geoff Schwartz, OG (Good veteran with a lot of experience, can be a good back up)
John Sullivan, C (Could be a good back up for Pouncey, upgrade over what we already have)
Terrance Knighton, DT (Could provide better depth than McCullers...I think Hargrave becomes starter)
Bishop Sankey, RB (Would love to have the Sankey/Stanky Leg connection..also an upgrade over Richardson and Toussaint. Toussaint can go to practice squad)

I dont see Tate being anywhere close to being an upgrade on Rogers. Rogers could be our starting slot receiver this year. Tate offers very little as a receiver and is pretty much just a return specialist. You want return specialists who are young, not guys entering their 8th NFL season. I'm fine with Rogers as our PR and Coates as our KR (along with Touissant) since both should also contribute on offense as well and are up-and-coming players.

Eric Rowe is on the block for a 5th or 6th. I liked him a lot, and if you get him for a 6th, it essentially gives you a mulligan on Senquez Golson.

Adding Rowe to the mix with Davis and Burns would add a whole lot of size and athleticism to the secondary from last year.

Are you sure a 5 or 6 is the asking price? That wouldn't be much to give considering we'll likely have a few extra picks in next years draft.

I would give up a 5th or 6th for Rowe...he just isn't fitting in with Philly's new Jim Schwartz defense...

That is the report - or at least the speculation - from Adam Caplan. Highly unlikely now after the Gilbert trade, but I'd still make the move for Rowe. That would leave Gay as the only prototypical slot type CB, but if you take gambles on both Rowe and Gilbert for late rounders, and 1 hits, then you've done well.

I'll be interesting to see the TEs that were released. Jace Amaro was cut by the Jets, Moaki as well.

I'd also look at Dirty Red's college teammate - Matt Ioannidis - as a PS candidate or even somebody to push Walton for a roster spot in a few weeks.

Trade No. 6 selection in '18 in for ex-eighth overall pick Justin Gilbert
The Steelers trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 53 players prior to today’s deadline of 4 p.m., and they also made a trade with the Cleveland Browns to add depth to the secondary.

The Browns sent cornerback Justin Gilbert, once the eighth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, to Pittsburgh in exchange for the Steelers’ sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Gilbert, who played his college football at Oklahoma State, appeared in 23 games for the Browns with three starts during his two seasons in Cleveland. He had 29 tackles, nine passes defensed, and one interception, which he returned 23 yards for a touchdown.

The trade will become final provided Gilbert passes a physical examination, and assuming he does pass the exam, Gilbert will join a 53-man roster that currently includes four other cornerbacks – Will Gay, Artie Burns, Senquez Golson, and Ross Cockrell. The inclusion of Golson on the initial 53-man roster indicates the Steelers are considering him as a possibility to be the guy to fill the IR-designated-to-return role. To do so, Golson will have to remain on the 53-man roster for 24 hours.

As for the other moves, the Steelers released wide receivers Demarcus Ayers, Cobi Hamilton, and Marcus Tucker; running backs Brandon Brown-Dukes, and Cameron Stingily; offensive linemen Shahbaz Ahmed, Antoine Everett, Matt Feiler, and Wade Hansen; cornerbacks Montell Garner, Doran Grant, Al-Hajj Shabazz, and Donald Washington; defensive linemen Lavon Hooks, Caushaud Lyons, and Johnny Maxey; linebackers Travis Feeney, Steven Johnson, and Jermauria Rasco; quarterback Bryn Renner; and safety Ray Vinopal.

The Steelers also waived/injured tight end Paul Lang.

Running back Le’Veon Bell will be placed on the Reserve/Suspended By Commissioner list at 4 p.m. today.

The Steelers can sign up to 10 practice squad players after 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 4

Have the Steelers made all their cuts yet? By my count via nfl.com they've cut 21 and waived Lang, but added Sanchez and Gilbert meaning they need to cut two more right? Or do the Bell and Bryant suspensions mean they are at 53? This would mean Matakevich made the 53. Happy to see it!

Bring him back after putting Golson on IR?

That is probably the most likely option at this point, unless they go outside of the organization again and grab somebody that was cut.

Dee Milliner was cut by the Jets if they want to double down on corners drafted in the top ten within the last 3 years...maybe one of the two actually pans out somewhat.

Ravens save $3 million by cutting Justin Forsett

With the Ravens surprisingly cutting running back Justin Forsett, who rushed for 1,266 yards two years ago in Baltimore, the team will avoid $3 million in salary for Forsett this year.

The next question for Forsett becomes whether someone else will pay him anything close to it. The Broncos make plenty of sense, given Forsett’s ties to coach Gary Kubiak. It was Kubiak who lobbied for Forsett two years ago in Baltimore, where he flourished.

The problem for Forsett in Denver is that the position seems to be covered, with C.J. Anderson leading the way and Devontae Booker in position to contribute.

Forsett can pick his next location, since he won’t pass through waivers. Teams may wait until after Week One to sign him, given that his salary will be as a practical matter fully guaranteed if he’s on a team’s Week One roster.

The Ravens will take a $700,000 salary-cap charge in 2016 and another $700,000 charge in 2017 for Forsett, who is still listed as the No. 1 tailback on the team’s online depth chart even after his release.

Packers cut Josh Sitton

Word broke on Saturday that the Packers were planning to cut guard Josh Sitton if they couldn’t find a team willing to trade for him before the deadline.

Sitton wasn’t traded before 4 p.m. ET and the Packers have announced his release.

“We want to thank Josh for his contributions during his time in Green Bay. He has been an important part of the success we have enjoyed on the field,” Thompson said. “While these decisions are never easy, this was done with a focus on what is best for the team and the growth of the offensive line. We wish Josh and his wife, Kristen, all the best in the future.”

Sitton was scheduled to make $5.9 million in the final year of his contract, which might have caused some teams to pass on trading for the three-time Pro Bowler. He made two of those Pro Bowls in the last two seasons and has been named a second-team All-Pro in each of the last three seasons, so it’s hard to imagine that someone won’t be adding him to their roster soon.

A raw rookie corner that I liked in this last draft from SE Louisiana, Harlan Miller, was just released by the Cards (they took him in the 6th round this spring).

I'm updating my list now that the official final cuts were made:

I'd like to see the Steelers re-sign former players Dorian Grant and put Golson on LTIR. I'd like to see Marcus Tucker signed to the practice squad...he seems to be a decent wide out and yes..I'm being a homer, he came from my alma mater. But this won't likely happen since Grant will be taken off waivers like last year. So here's my list that weren't Steelers:

Those who weren't with the Steelers that I hope to have signed:

Carl Bradford, LB- I remember wanting this guy to be drafted two years ago from Arizona State. I thought he decent last year filling in for injured linebackers.

David Yankey, OG- He was suppose to be as good as David DeCastro, I still think he could..get him signed

Aaron Murray, QB- This guy seems to get a lot of hype (or had it years ago coming out the draft) and seems to be a good #4 for now (stashed on the practice squad) in case Mettenberger doesn't turn out (which I hope he does) or if the Steelers go through how many quarterbacks like last year (I sure hope not)

Isaiah Battle, OT- Wasn't this the guy that was drafted in the Supplemental draft a couple years back? I thought I remembered wanting to get this guy drafted..but maybe he hasn't turned out to be the potential he had? I still think this would be a decent stash on the practice squad..more depth for the currently injured.

Jace Amaro, TE- Why would you not want to take a chance on this former second round pick? Nobody knows the truth behind Ladarius Green (which bums me out, I really loved the signing)..whether it's his ankle or head...he's so far behind right now, it actually worries me. Amaro would be another nice stash on the practice squad...or cut Gamble and have Amaro battle with James.

Dee Milliner, CB- As of right now..we have four healthy corners and that's it. A bit worrisome..no? Yes, we have Davis that can go to nickel and Golden to safety..but why take Davis away from the real reason why he got drafted, to be a safety. Since the Steelers just got Gilbert..I'd like to see get better odds with signing Milliner and have five corners (put Golson on LTIR).
(Gay, Cockrell, Gilbert, Burns and Milliner)

Jerrell Powe, NT- Steelers need more depth..all they have is Hargrave and McCullers for defensive tackle, right? Mathews is currently taking over for Hayward with his injury..so who's left after that? Powe had a lot of potential coming out of college, just hasn't found it yet in the NFL.

Jake McGee, TE- If we can't get Amaro, go with McGee..playing for the Gators, he did decent. Same reason as I want Amaro with the Steelers.

Blake Countress, S- Yes...another homer pick (M GO BLUE!), I watched Countress while at Michigan and he was a true corner..he has the experience and maybe becoming a safety in the NFL didn't turn out well which could have gotten him cut. Either way, more depth in the secondary.

Justin Forsett, RB- I'd love to see the Steelers get Forsett...but they don't want to pay anything close to what he was suppose to get from the Ravens..and I'd highly doubt he'd accept a third string role or practice squad.

These guys could be some huge upgrades, if given another chance.

Report: Panthers release cornerback Bene Benwikere
Posted by Darin Gantt on October 7, 2016, 11:45 AM EDT

The Panthers were already young in the secondary, and they are apparently getting rid of one of the experienced ones.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the Panthers are releasing former starting cornerback Bene Benwikere.

The third-year corner had started for them after the post-Josh Norman overhaul, and had an interception in the opener against Denver.

He was part of a secondary that got torched by Julio Jones for 300 yards last week, but he was hardly the only one at fault.

The Panthers drafted three cornerbacks this year, and are apparently content to move on without the 2014 fifth-rounder. They’ve replaced him on the roster with practice-squader Zack Sanchez.
