CFL star Shawn Lemon. He had 13 sacks last year.

I am surprised they signed him...is he good enough to become a star at linebacker? Our replacement for Worilds?

We have another outside LB who has this too. Maybe between the two we can get a 4 cylinder's worth of pass rush.

I like this move. I enjoy watching the CFL when its on. I really think there are more than a few players in that league that could play in the NFL. Im really surprised more teams dont look to the CFL for camp bodies with potential.

What I am concerned about with Lemon is he needs a head of steam and even then doesn't seem like a physical player. He might become a guy you bring in as a pass rush specialist on passing downs.

Slapstick
01-17-2015, 10:56 AM
I don't know if he needs a head of steam as much as CFL defenders line up one yard off of the LoS, so they get a head of steam...also, it looks like he typically lines up in the "wide 9"...

Moving to the NFL will be an adjustment for sure...

This is the only acceptable response.

It's all about the pressure. This team better scour the earth and be prepared to spend some serious cash to upgrade the pass rush...specifically OLB. Other than maybe Ben's contract, it should be the number 1 personnel priority of the offseaon. We can't ignore the back-end of the defense either, but there is no way we can be content with the current crop of OLBs...regardless of their pedigree or promise.

I don't mind them addressing quality depth with a guy like Lemon, but let's hope that this franchise still has its' sights set on chasing down the best possible free agent pass rusher on the market and putting them in the Black and Gold! :tt2

I took a look at some film and here is what jumped out at me:
He showed good use of his hands in countering linemen's hand punch when rushing.
He has a burst and some good closing speed.
Breaks down well and uses his shoulders when tackling and his head stays up.
Has some good pass rush moves. Spin move is okay and has some quicks in his lateral movement giving him some good counters and inside pass rush ability. Can turn the corner but that is mostly from a wide 9. I'll get back to that playing against air scheme.
Shows ability to play with leverage keeping his pad level low. Like that at every level. Sometimes being only 6'2 works to an advantage against tall linemen.
He is more DE then olb. Much more DE. Don't know if he can play backing up. Don't know if he can cover. Not saying he can't he just wasn't in a scheme where he was being asked to do that much.
The quality of the linemen he was going against were no where near NFL line play. Saw him against a bunch of waist benders. The footwork of O linemen at this level is nothing like what he is use to. Again it doesn't mean he can't its just like any rookie stepping in from college where now he will find it more difficult.
43 team would be much better transition for Lemon. Phily wide 9 D where he is a one gap get up the field rusher looks to be where he fits best.
Not a sure thing by any means. Could he compete? Sure.
Since he can flip I would say he could play the roll Moats played in 14 perhaps. He will be an interesting watch at camp if he is signed. Limited look at this guy but he would not be a lock to make our roster or any NFL roster imho.

Agreed. You just have to understand that, whenever you don't leave any stone unturned, you may occasionally come up with a Lemon.

Last year, Cordarrow Law signed with the Chargers and ended up getting a sack...I don't think anyone is declaring Lemon the savior, but if we can get one sack and some depth from a guy signed to a futures contract, isn't that good?

No, Philly wouldn't be better. They play a 3-4 now (since Kelly arrived) similar to ours.

Yeah, but it sure seems like some people are saying that this does not solve the pass rush problem...to which I say, "Duh." I'm all about due diligence. If we've found the next Cameron Wake, fantastic! If we've found a guy who can come in and play some snaps, that's also fine. If he doesn't make the team, oh well...at least the FO did something out of the ordinary...

Sorry a little loose with the term Phily wide 9 just wide 9 would be better. Outside shoulder tech designed to force runs inside and on pass plays allows end to get depth needed to pressure the qb (7,8,9 yds) beyond los. Point was and is he was in a scheme like this. Puts player in good position to rush but when you align outside shoulder a lot of pressure is on inside backers to fill as splits are bigger.
Can he stack and shed? Will need to adapt to the NFL game.

01-17-2015, 05:51 PM
That was what killed the "wide 9" alignment defense in Philly...inside for us, we have Shazier and Timmons (along with Spence and Williams)...I'd be okay taking our chances with that particular alignment on passing downs...

Crazy thinking would be a 3rd & long blitz package with Suh, Heyward, Jones, Lemon(maybe), Timmons, Shazier, Spence wide nine. Give the rushing OLB's a edge over the tackles. And yes I understand I am in fairy land! Still a interesting alignment to try even without Suh. Heyward and McLendon might work well enough.:) Ahh to dream of the defense possibilities. :)

So is this all plans to replace Worilds? No offer at all for him now? JH still on speed dial in case of injury? Does this drop the round when the Steelers could draft a OLB? No FA OLB brought in for a look?

Stir the pot all you want, but I am all in on Suh. Break the bank and sign this guy. You can fill the rest of the holes with CFL players, and Im OK with that. With Suh in the middle the center of our defense would be untouchable. No matter who we put at OLB, they will be that much more effective because Suh will command a double team on every passing down. DBs will also look beter because the pocket will collapse much quicker on opposing QBs.

Offseason plans.

Sign Suh

Keep Offense together

If they let Worilds walk, I'd be okay...

It seems to me that the Steelers like to have all of their personnel gaps covered, with a band-aid at least. Then, they can go into the draft and simply pick BPA...if need and BPA work together, then great. Maybe try to sign a Mike Mitchell level free agent OLB...

One thing we can count on is them not breaking the bank for a big name...

I'd be fine with that if they sign Breaux...but how will he translate to the NFL, just as I ask about Lemon too. If this happens, I am seeing the Steelers drafting a defensive tackle (Danny Sheldon) or a safety (Cody Prewitt) or outside linebacker (Dante Fowler jr....IF he drops, but doubtful)
