Ryan Shazier To Miss At Least One Game

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers got a measure of good news on the injury front when they learned that rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier sprained his right knee but avoided a more serious injury after teammate Lawrence Timmons rolled onto his lower leg in a 37-19 win over the Carolina Panthers.

Shazier won’t play Sunday against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said, and cornerback Ike Taylor is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his broken right forearm.

With Taylor sidelined, William Gay will play right cornerback in the Steelers’ base defense and move to the slot, where the eighth-year veteran normally plays in the nickel package.

Tomlin said Antwon Blake, Brice McCain and B.W. Webb will compete this week for the job of right cornerback in the Steelers’ nickel defense.

"We’ll let those guys sort themselves out on the practice field,” Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Sean Spence will get the first opportunity to replace Shazier at left inside linebacker, but Tomlin did not discount Vince Williams also competing for the starting job while Shazier is sidelined.

Williams started 11 games at left inside linebacker last season, but he has been playing behind Timmons at right inside linebacker.
“We’re not going to close the door on any developments in terms of division of labor,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin is hopeful that the Steelers will get a couple of injured players back for their 1 p.m. ET game Sunday against the Buccaneers.

Rookie running back Dri Archer (ankle) and starting left guard Ramon Foster (ankle) are expected to do more in practice this week, Tomlin said.

Archer hasn’t played since spraining his ankle in the Steelers’ season opener.

Foster didn’t play in the Steelers’ win over the Panthers after spraining his ankle last week in practice.

“Ramon’s got to show that he’s capable of above the line movement with that ankle injury,” Tomlin said.

Good to know Gay will continue to man the slot in our nickel defense. I think he is well suited for that role and didn't want to see him promoted out of it. Also good to hear Tomlins perspective regarding Foster, rushing a lineman back from an ankle injury doesn't help anyone.

Especially when his backup is playing "above the line."

Sean Spences role as a mack should be getting him much more production than he is getting. Spence is actually not playing all that well. They moved Timmons to the buck which traditionally doesn't lend itself to the kind of production you see from the mack position. Spence is below average at this point. He isn't embarrassing himself but he isn't the solution at that spot.

Not playing good offenses, so hard to tell. I'd play it safe with Shazier. Got Spence and Williams to fill in until he's 100%.

I barely notice him out there, which, as an ILB, isn't a good thing (unlike when you are an OLmen). But he is coming off a horrific injury and is virtually a rookie (playing time wise) so I am not ready to conclude that he ain't no good. And to be honest, Shazier wasn't setting the world on fire when he was in there either (but just a rookie and he has to learn LuBaea's 2,000-page, brain surgery play book).

You are right sb. The Mack in the 3-4 should have the most tackles on the team. We barely hear his name called

You'd like to see more production from Spence, no doubt. On the other hand, you also haven't seen the defense getting gashed, which is indicative of Spence (and everybody else) being in the proper lanes.

While I do appreciate the seemingly end to getting gashed as often, seeing Spence' college vids made me believe he would be diagnosing plays and blowing them up. I think he still could become that player, but he isn't right now. He's only avg. about 3 tackles a game. From the Mack?
Paul Posluszny has 53 tackles for the Jags. That's over 10 a game.

Don't rush him back. Give him a couple more weeks and then let him finish the season and grow into the player we need him to be in coming years.

Jags run a 4-3, but still, Spence should be around the ball a whole lot more.
