View Full Version : 2014 Prediction for Our Steelers

What do you guys predict for the Steelers this upcoming season?

I'm going to be a bit bold here and say 14-2.

I think the team we're putting together this year is going to be awesome. Starting with defense, Troy is coming off of his 1st healthy year and into possibly his last year. I see big things from him. Behind him, Mike Mitchell, is a fast and talented FS that will help Troy to be Troy. Timmons in the middle is always a great thing. You know what to expect from him. Shazier is fast and instinctive and the real reason Troy can be himself. Outside you have Ike eager to prove himself after a sub-par season in 2013 and a pay cut that has him "pissed off". Cortez is in his final contract year and has a year under his belt as a starter. Remember, he's the reason (partly) why the Steelers felt they could let Lewis escape to N.O. AT the OLB position we have Worilds ready to prove last year wasn't a fluke. (I do think his sack production came a little easier than most think it did, but thats a conversation for another time). Jarvis is in his 2nd year. If he can put his talent to use this year and just play without thinking about where to line up and what his assignments are he will be a wrecking ball. The D-Line, in my mind, is our weakest link. If we can get them to gel, we will have another #1 defense.

The offense has me excited as well. Ben is smack dab in the middle of his prime and possibly passes for over 5,000 yards this year. The RB's are quite possibly the best group we've had in 10+ years. Bell will rush for over 1,000 yds. Blount will get over 500 yds and Archer will have 300 yds plus 500+ yds receiving. The OLine is going to best we've had since the late 90's. Munchak will coach at least 2 of them straight to the pro bowl. Our receivers will dominate to the surprise of many experts. Brown will put an exclamation point on 2013. Over 1500 yds receiving and 10+ TD's. Wheaton finds his groove and produces more than expected. Lance Moore fills in admirably for the departed, Jerricho Cotchery. Martavis Bryant surprises as well and snags 700 yds and 6 TD's. Then there's Heath Miller. This guy has been a Top Tier TE his entire career, but only Steelers Nation has noticed. However, this year the NFL will take notice as he gets over 1,000 yds and 10 TDs.

I believe we have Super Bowl team just waiting to prove it. What do guys think?

I sure hope you're right. I'll be ecstatic if you are.

To me, the Steelers have made some steps toward improvement, but there are still too many question marks. I'll predict 10-6 ...and I feel like I'm being optimistic!

A decade ago the Steelers were coming off of a 6-10 record and with little expectations came back in 2004 with a 15-1 record. After that season I've become a delusional optimist going into every Steelers season so I'll go ahead and predict 15-1.

11-5, Steelers O becomes top tier and the D recovers some it's old swag.

Pencil me in for 11-5 and an AFC North division title.

homer-tastic in this thread.

But i do think there is a ton to be excited about, especially considering the way they finished and the new additions in the busy FA period and the pretty aggressive defensive draft

My biggest concern is without a doubt #2 WR and Wheatons ability to take that.

10-6 seems reaonable....would have been a 10-6 team or 11-5 team the last two years if it wasnt for some gut wrenching last second losses to the likes of the raiders, titans, dolphins ect...maybe they get over that hump and win the easy ones this year

I think the best we can do is 10-6 but most likely 9-7. I think it will still take a couple of years for the new defensive players to fit in. What has me excited is I believe it will be the offense carrying the team ... finally. After so many years of such promise I think they will be a force to recon with. Ben and Haley on the same page, an offensive line that I believe will gel under their new line coach, and weapons out the ying-yang.

I wish this would have happened a few years ago when the defense was still viable and we could have had a title or 2 more.

With no key injuries (i.e.Ben) I will go 11-5.

Upside would be 12-4 and lowside would be 9-7

12-4 Weak schedule in the beginning of the season which will allow our younger players to learn, Develop, and contribute later in the year.

We have improved nearly all around. Our secondary is going to be much better with Mitchell, with another year underneath Allen's belt and a chip on Ike's shoulder. Shazier will have some growing pains but is an instant upgrade over Williams and Jones should benefit from it being his second year. The OL should be better with Munchak. Running backs...Archer and Blount should add much. The only place of concern I agree is #2 WR and I think that plays itself out in camp...with a possible coup in starting two Brown's. If this team stays healthy 11-5 is very doable.

The thing I love most about or WR situation is the fact that we wont have CRY BABIES who are demanding the ball. We can go back as far as CEDRIC WILSON days! remember that fool was crying about getting more passes thrown his way! Our one weakness can actually be a strength this year. Plug and Play any of our WR's and formations and keep the selfish out of the position. I personally like that about this year and we have some strong SKILL sets for some really cool formations this year.

Actually, Ced Wilson was too busy whining to the refs about pass interference for every pass thrown his way to cry about anything else.

Pouncey - All-pro (and at least 4 inflammatory tweets).
Shazier – Rookie of the year
Bell – 2000 rushing yards
Archer – returns 6 kicks for TD’s (punts and kick-offs)
Brown & Wheaton both go for over 1000 yards receiving
Mitchell – highest INTs for safety in NFL
Tuitt – 12 sacks

10-6
big question marks in the secondary. will ike regress more, can mitchell understand this defense, troy is due for his usually injuries.
ilb corp is counting on a rookie, a second year olb that flopped last year and a way overpriced 1/2 season player with a injury history and franchise tag on him
dline has lots to prove, thin and again counting on a rookie and a scrub FA.
wr#2
can the oline finally get it together
can ben be injury free 2 years in a row?, hasnt happened in his career yet.
this team needs alot of luck to be real competitive this year. an easy schedule should allow us to win the division

I was thinking the same: 12-4 at best, 9-7 at worst, 10-6 most likely.

We will see either 12-4, 13-3 or 14-2.

Our losses will be from Carolina, Indianapolis, New Orleans and Kansas City.

Yeah. I said it. We sweep the division.

8-8, finishing strong after another weak start, where the team is unprepared, and has the wrong people in the wrong places.

I hope I'm wrong! Will hate seeing another Roethlisberger year go to waste, but this sure looks like a re-building year and Tomlin seems out of ideas......

I agree with Shawn a lot of arrows are pointing up for this team. I will feel better saying that after my week at Latrobe but good f/a moves and a possible special draft along with the return of Pouncey and perhaps Spence has to at least make one excited about the 14 season.
I'll say 10-6. Anything less I would feel we underachieved. Win more then that I would say that a lot of young guys made big contributions.

Nah, I just don't think that it makes much sense to predict outcomes of games months from now, not knowing how both team's season are going, injuries to both sides etc. Most people who predict records base it on how they feel their team will play through the season, but that doesn't help if you don't also what happens with other teams.

ONLY A FEW CAMP CONCERNS

The most harmonious off-season of at least the Mike Tomlin era ends today, but some natural concerns return with the Steelers.

In a few hours, the Steelers will not only begin conditioning drills, they'll claim victory for the quietest off-season of at least the Mike Tomlin era, and perhaps longer.

Grab the checklist:

* No suspensions hanging over the team.

* No holdouts, rookie or otherwise.

* No divisive commentary in the air, like the James Harrison comment about Ben Roethlisberger a few years ago or the anonymous comment about LaMarr Woodley last year.

* No injuries about which to worry, not even Nick Williams, the third-team defensive end who finally got back on the field the last week of spring practice.

* No one's even expected to fail the conditioning test this afternoon -- unless Cam Thomas shows up to his new team out of shape. And even then, Brett Keisel's within earshot of ending his premature "retirement."

Can we call this the greatest off-season in the history of the franchise?

Well, it's as quiet as any. Coaches claim they always hold their breath after releasing their players into the wilds of vacation-land from mid-June until late July. So only a few hours remain until those coaches can breathe again. Of course, they'll just turn their worried heads to other topics, and there are a few:

Will the sophomores make their expected improvement?

The two in question are Markus Wheaton and Jarvis Jones. Wheaton is really the only unproven player on offense and therefore the biggest question mark. But he has pedigree, so, even if his mangled pinky finger makes his hands less than perfect, he had a great college career and was very impressive this past spring. With the line in shape, Antonio Brown in his prime, Heath Miller back in good health, and the stable of running backs looking stronger than any in recent years, what Wheaton can provide on the outside of veteran slot receiver Lance Moore is of utmost importance to Roethlisberger.

Jones, of course, is the biggest question mark for most fans, but even some of us who questioned drafting him in the first round last year liked what we saw even as he floundered around the field as a rare rookie starter last season. He did struggle, but at times flashed the ability to grow into a solid-to-good sophomore pass-rusher.

Is the line really in shape?

Well, the interior of the offensive line is in great shape. There's even depth there this year. There's depth at tackle, too, in the form of Guy Whimper. But the three tackles in front of Whimper are the real question marks here. Will Kelvin Beachum hold up at left tackle when teams actually game plan to run him over? Will Marcus Gilbert show consistency? And can Mike Adams learn how to use his upper body in pass protection? Mike Munchak is the new O-line coach and is considered by many to have been the team's top off-season acquisition. The Hall of Famer showed off his teaching skills and experience last spring. Can he turn this group of emerging high-rounders into the kind of fighting unit that led the team to the 2005 title? It's possible.

Will they need Keisel?

Well, if Thomas shows up out of shape -- or in the shape of a nose tackle instead of a defensive end -- and then second-rounder Stephon Tuitt continues to struggle with his NASA rocket science project (otherwise known as the Steelers' defensive playbook), Tomlin may need to call back Keisel, the 36-year-old defensive end who wasn't re-signed but who isn't ready to retire just yet. The Steelers signed Thomas to a backup's contract to replace Al Woods and then drafted Tuitt in the second round to replace Keisel. So the question really comes down to Tuitt's development. And if the aforementioned Williams or Brian Arnfelt can't handle the No. 4 DE spot, there will be depth issues, too.

Are the inside linebackers too light?

Art Rooney II called for an improvement in the run defense and perhaps that's behind the signing of the 330-pound Thomas, a nose tackle they've put at strong-side end. And with nose tackle Steve McLendon putting on the 30 pounds he lost while overtraining last summer, the line will certainly have size. Will that help the Steelers get away with using two inside linebackers who are more quick than strong? Ryan Shazier (listed at 237), of course, is this year's first-rounder and the staff force-fed him the defense in the spring, to the point of holding the final practice mainly for his benefit. Shazier's lightning-quick, but he ran into a brick wall named David DeCastro on more than one running occasion during OTAs. Lawrence Timmons (listed at 234) had been the playmaking mack inside backer but will now move to the strong-side buck position. Can he hold up? Will he make the calls on time? Minor questions, but natural ones.

Can the little guys come up big?

Dri Archer isn't even 5 feet 7 but he was drafted in the third round because the Steelers timed his combine 40 at sub 4.2. That will make him the fastest player in the NFL. Tomlin wants to make the running back a dual receiving threat, but Archer didn't show much without the ball last spring. "I can get a 4.6 guy to do that," Tomlin hollered as Archer came up short on yet another deep ball. So Archer's receiving skills will certainly be a point of emphasis for the offensive coaches this camp.

The defensive coaches will be looking for one of their small, quick corners to win the No. 4 job as well. While most are questioning the top three corners, it's really only the No. 4 spot that's wide open. And there will be several candidates to sort through in Latrobe, including sophomore safety Shamarko Thomas.
