Cool. I still have my #55 Porter jersey too so I'm gonna have to break it out for opening day.

Maybe he'll fight opposing coaches in pregames :)

I think Joey was a smart player as much as he was talented so this should do well with teaching the players plus, someone they can relate to. With all our 70's Steeler great players, outside of Joe Green was there any other coaches from that teams era ?

The FO must agree. This D lost it's swagger awhile back. There is no intimidation...no fear from opposing teams. I must believe Porter was brought in to inject some attitude.

Can he play DB?

He can probably still rush the QB from the right better than anyone we have on the roster right now.

Is it for off-season and training camp only? Or is it a permanent position?

If he an assistant LB coach on an ongoing basis, does this mean that more defensive responsibility goes to Butler?

As I read the article it is a permanent position. Probably similar to what Jerry Olsavsky was doing...wasn't he reported to be leaving or considering it? He will probably have special emphasis teaching the OLBs techniques.

Doesn't mean Butler get more leadership role...unfortunately

Olsavsky interviewed for the LB coach position in Buffalo, which went to Fred Pagac...

While it may not be publicized, I truly believe that the Steelers are preparing for a transition....if they keep a guy like Hoke around (like they did last year), they will have former players who played for years in LeBeau's defense to teach technique to the new generation...

I just wonder...No...Let me re-phrase...I just hope Peezy will be in the middle of the D huddle on the sidline with the pregame "Who Ride" and get that sound bite. I don't care if he s a coach..His intensity could be injected into the D! Welcome Home Boy!

i put that draft in my sig about 3-4 weeks ago.

i agree. mccullers looked bad
i will have to sit down redo it.

I think that Peezy was just brought in to adjust attitudes. Nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't signify a shift in power for other coaches, it does not mean that we are changing 3-4, or going to the 4-3, it does not mean that Lebeau is ceding power to anybody, or that we are replacing anybody etc...

He is just coming in to kick some butt!

This is great news. I think his impact will be much greater with the 1st and 2nd year guys with instilling that old Steeler attitude. Vince Williams seemed more willing to take a role as emotional leader than Jarvis imo. (Just judging the two rookie LBers). But I hope the whole defense gets a lift.

"CHEAT THAT!!!!"... End of the afc divisional game against Indianapolis 2005.... One of my favorite fired up moments.... That and the locker room after we beat the bengals the game before.... Welcome back PEEZY!!

I love having Porter back. One of my all time favorites. I also think he'll be great for Jones. Like Jones, Porter didn't have the absolute brute strength of James Harrison (who does?). I'd hope that he can really work with Jones. It is also great to see the return of one of my all time favorite Steelers.

Perhaps he was only hired for his disposition (), but he might actually be a decent coach as well, a la Kevin Greene...

Last year, Porter worked primarily with Cory James and Shaq Barrett at Colorado State

Cory James:

2012 (before Peezy) - 10 TFL, 6.5 sacks, 2 QB hurries
2013 (with Peezy) - 12 TFL, 8 sacks, 5 QB hurries

Shaq Barrett:

2012 - 7.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 2 QB hurries
2013 - 20.5 TFL, 12 sacks, 6 QB hurries

Now, is that all thanks to Joey Porter? Probably not...but, considering he worked with them mostly on pass rushing, I would imagine improving their technique helped...

Porter was also impressive in the weight room...if he can help to produce similar improvement in Jarvis Jones, I will be extremely pleased...

He may very well be a great coach but I'm not sure there is any way to know it at this point. But, what I do know is he will infuse some attitude into these guys. I suspect Tomlin will let Porter be a wild card...turn him lose on these guys...show em what Steeler ball is all about. Its obvious on a couple guys on that D even know what that's about.

Best Steeler news i have heard in a long time. Peezy nearly embodied all that it was and should be as Steeler 3-4 outside Linebacker.

The defense is mere smoke and mirrors without hardnosed operators on the field like him, Greg LLoyd, James Harrison, and or Kevin Greene.

Attempting to run 3-4 comprised of just a guy Tampa 2 type backers with one or two guys with the physical tools whom lack heart, discipline, explosiveness and killer instinct is absurd.

Perhaps the Brass is attempting to send a subtle message to everyone it may concern ?
