Just to have a 2nd LS for the kicker competition we are going to have?

Greg Warren signed a 2 year, $1.62 million contract last offseason. We'll likely keep him for the second year of that contract, but if this kid shows promise and could be had for less $$$, there is a possibility he could take over (since we are in cost-cutting mode and all). Plus, you have to figure that Warren's multiple ACL tears works against him at this point in his career (much like Daniel Sepulveda's). Even if we keep Warren, it's always good to have alternate options available to us if he does go down to injury again (like how Kapinos was a phone call away the last 2 times Sep went down).

Warren's on good money for a role player. If he can be outplayed by a cheaper option- make it happen.
don't the Steelers normally take 2 LSers to camp? same as Punters/Kickers?
It's all about options- if the incumbant is outplayed, all's good. If the incumbant holds his spot- you've lost nothing.
Maybe Swiss Army Knife Steeler (Trai Essex) should start Long Snapping. That'd guarentee his spot on the roster, free up a spot for a positional player & make Essex more worthy of his place in the team.

It's either because Warren is hurt or they're afraid of his injury past or just for camp. They'd only save about $100,000-200,000. Not alot of help in the fight against the cap.
