I'd rather we stay in house

hope he doesnt as he has done one hell of a job this season.
heck, he has even silenced some of his critics on this board. That is until we lose another game where the offense scores 16 points.

I don't think he'll retire for a while yet...Carnell Lake is here now.. He might be next in line...

Yeah, I don't think he will retire after this year but this eventuality has to be on everyone's mind in the organization. If Carnell Lake could take his place that would be awesome. Great players don't always translate to great coaches but from what I have been hearing Lake may be an exception.

I have changed my mind about what happens when LeBeau leaves...
I think that the Steelers will stay in-house and that they will keep the 3-4 Zone Blitz defense...
This defense is as sound as any in the NFL...normally dependent upon sacks and turnovers, the Steelers were down in both areas yet still finished #1 overall and #1 in scoring defense...if that isn't sound defense, I don't know what is...
Tomlin will promote Butler...
Isn't Raheem Morris a defensive coach?
His ousting is almost guaranteed in TB (his team quit on him, flat-out), and he and Tomlin are good friends. I'm not saying I want it to happen; just saying that I've heard this is something that is bound to happen.

Steve Spagnuolo and Raheem Morris are both 4-3 coaches. No thanks.

I think he will take the organization into consideration and be sure his successor is in line and ready. I hope that is Carnell Lake but wouldnt complain if Tomlin et al feel that Butler is the heir apparent.

Not sure Spags would be a fit here. But don't forget, he's the guy who orchestrated the defensive gameplan that ruined the Pats perfect season. He'll always be a coach that I have a ton of respect for. He won't be unemployed for long.

Butler was lured away at the the last minute from accepting the Dolphins DC job a year ago. I'm sure he was told he would be the guy when LeBeau leaves.

I love Lake as much as the next guy, and I think that he has done a great job coaching the secondary, but no way is he next in line. He has little experience and we have several guys who have been coaches under Lebeau for years.
Keith Butler is in his ninth year on the Steelers’ coaching staff after joining the staff prior to the 2003 season. He remained on staff following Mike Tomlin’s hiring in January, 2007.
John Mitchell is in his 18th season as the Steelers’ defensive line coach, ranking him as the longest-tenured member of the Steelers’ coaching staff. He remained with the team following Mike Tomlin’s hiring in January, 2007, and was promoted to assistant head coach
Butler is next in line, but I wonder if Mitchell would get consideration. I knew that he'd been here long, but did not realize 18 consecutive years. He was the DL coach during Lebeau's first go around as DC, and is still here.
I also wonder if Olsavsky would take Butler's place as LB coach if Butler becomes DC.

John Mitchell may retire before LeBeau. He's already 60, and I believe he stated that he might step aside when the Aaron Smith/Casey Hampton/Brett Keisel d-line was no longer. One down.

Yep, Butler could be next in line, but he could get lured away again, especially if LeBeau stickes around for another 4-5 years...That's why Carnell might be the one who ends up getting the position. Anyways, I hope we have a long time to debate this... :D

My vote is for Lake. Tomlin had no experience and we hired him and it's worked out pretty well. Some guys just have it. I think Lake is one of those guys.

I can't help but think that LeBeau's possible retirement aided in the decision to hire Olsavsky...it was between Jerry and Earl Holmes, IIRC...
If that happens and they can bring in Aaron Smith as an assistant and eventually D-Line coach, it would put coaches who have experience playing in this defense to all three levels...

hood, heyward, timmons and woodley are guys who could make the switch pretty easily IMO

Former players all around.
Chuck for QB coach
Hines for WR coach
DJ for TE coach - just to get him off the field
Farrior to coach the LBs - he's been calling the defense so long on the field, he has to be thinking like lebeau now
Dirt for Oline

Don't forget that former player Joe Greene is our Special Assistant for both Pro and College Personnel, and former player Mark Bruener was recently hired to be our BLESTO scout on the west coast near his native Washington.

While I think DJ is not as bad as people say, (as long as he is the "third" tight end not number 2) I gotta say THAT THERE IS FUNNY.
Nice one Flippy.

I don't get the DJ hate for one. The guy catches the few passes that come his way. I guess he "whiffed" on a block somewhere, so that is all he is remembered for? I don't focus on him but I would bet his overall blocking grades out well.
Maybe it's because he doesn't look graceful and catlike when he is running? I think he seems to be a good team guy. Not pretty but gets the job done. But he is next in the line of selected players for ridicule. There always needs to be someone the fans agree to mock and make fun of.
How is this for one of the past holders of this dubious distinction. My ole pal Nate Washington, got 1,000 receiving yards this season! Take that Nate haters. Way to go Nate!

Great point. He played a part in saving football. Awesome coaching and preparation. great defensive play.

Andy Reid promoted an offensive line coach to DC this past year.
Maybe we'll go a similar route and change Arians from OC to DC. lol

DJ is this offense's version of what Tyrone Carter and Anthony Madison were for the defense a couple of years ago. Players way above his head who isn't really that good at anything.
I'd draft a TE (Rounds 4-6) in this next draft or get a better one in free agency. The reality is that neither Johnson (not good enough) nor Saunders (not experienced enough) could step in for Heath for 2-3 game if he was injured like Spaeth did a couple of years ago. For all the hate Spaeth got he was a good back up TE.

The one guy not in football that I'd talk to before anyone else about being DL's replacement would be Eric Mangini.

He's coached for the Ravens, Jets, Pats, and Browns, four of the most vile franchises in all of pro sports. I could excuse him if he coached for one, or maybe even two of them...but all four??? Keep that Mangina far away from my team. Having him do a cameo on the Sopranos was a bigger injustice than their final episode fade to black.

Just thinking he's drafted and called defenses suited to stopping a passing attack like NE's. Now the NE offense permeates the NFL in GB, NO, etc.
I think his systems and play calling were designed for the new NFL rules favoring offenses.
Magini seems a little more aggressive than conservative, but I'd see him calling a game very similar to the one Lebeau called against NE earlier this year.
I think he's really underrated. And he's done some good drafting and put together several very good defenses.
At least he hasn't coached the Raiders and Cowboys yet.

This job has already been promised to Butler. He refused to even interview with Pittsburgh West for the coordinator job and he turned down the offer from Miami. He knows the system and the players here. This job will be filled before it's even open.

:Agree :Agree :Agree IMO he doesn't turn down the Miami job without getting a "wink, wink, nod, nod" from our front office and senior leadership.
