1. Before I forget:

A regular “Ghost of Christmas Present” I am …

2. There is an old Simpsons episode (Lisa the Vegetarian) in which Homer is heard pathetically affirming the viability of his formerly BBQ-ing pig that had recently gone AWOL thanks to an indignant and recently vegetarian-ized Lisa The pig rolls through some bushes and Homer proclaims it “a little dirty” but “still good”. It falls in a river and homer proclaims it “a little slimy” but “its still good”. The pig goes airborne and before Homer can proclaim it is “still good” Bart points out that it is gone. Every optimistic post I read … I now read in Homer’s voice.

3. Power is out at Candlestick Park … Let the crappy jokes begin!
a. That Bay Area transformer is mowing so-and-so’s grass (blowing on Monday Night).
b. Inevitable Journey "Lights" reference.
c. This is [high profile politician]’s fault.
d. This looks like a job for Tim Tebow!

4. Chris Berman Sucks #6579: This is just like the earthquake! … except there’s no danger … and no earthquake …

5. Early on the 49ers drove 17 plays for a field goal – the announcers claimed that it was “the longest drive by the 49ers since 2008”. It seems like I hear similar “historic drive” comments said way too often in relation to this Steelers defense.

6. But the Steelers turn it over twice and were only down 6-0. If their offense could have woken up long enough to get a first down this game was there for the taking.

7. The 49ers had struggled to protect Smith over the last three games but of course, they don’t have a problem against the Steelers. Against the Steelers they have suddenly fixed all their protection problems.

8. James Harrison simultaneously impresses me with his wit and attention to technology and disappoints me with his flimsy grasp of the queen’s english.

Almost got it ...

9. I honestly thought the Steelers would pull it together long enough to score 7 and get out of San Fran with a win … much like I keep hoping the ship misses the iceberg …

Icebergs totally respond to reverse psychology.

10. The only interesting thing about this game is how they will portray the whole “lights going out “thing on next week’s “Come on, man!”

11. Ben’s security blanket?

12. One thing that is handy to have when your team is truggling to score points or do anything positive on offense is bad clock management at the half. That was some quality coaching there.

13. I am impressed with the 49ers. Decent defense and as long as Alex Smith doesn’t try to be something he is not they should go far.

14. I texted my brother about 2 hours before kickoff and told him the Steelers would lose. He took it in stride because he knows I am a football genius. I figured they would lose because I am not a “real Steelers fan”.

15. This Steelers offense struggles against good defenses. And by “struggles” I mean “can’t figure out which end of the football you are supposed to blow into to make it sound like a trumpet”.

16. The good news is that I didn’t let it get to me.

17. The other good news is that when the 49ers scored their first TD I turned off the TV and went to bed ... no reason to stay up at that point because the 49ers had clearly built an insurmountable lead.

Damn, the gate is locked! This is just like that time we got stuck on the escalator when the power went out during that non-earthquake on Monday night.

19. This Steelers team is much better served with the 5th seed and playing the Texans in Houston than it is with the 3rd seed and having to play the Ravens (and lose) again.

20. Either way the Steelers are not healthy and have been beating up on the worst divisions in the NFL all year long. Credit to them for taking advantage of a soft schedule.

21. Way too many weeks this year I sit and watch this team and what I see indicates that the offensive and defensive strategy meetings look something like this …
http://wtfiswiththis.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/wtf4_things_that_make_you_say_wtf-s352x351-17805-580.jpg
But with a disco ball …

22. The bad news is that I thought I had DVR to allow me to perform the post mortem … but of course, the game went long didn’t it? The dude that creates a DVR that smart enough to read a real-time schedule feed on the channel it is recording will make a fortune.

23. Age and perennially drafting at the bottom of the first round are catching up with this team. If management is thinking that immediate gratification is the way to go (tis the season after all) they will start making some moves to capitalize on the next couple of years while Ben is still in his prime – OR – they will draft a young offensive line and let Ben suffer for a season or two for the same reason (he is in his prime). By the time the line gels Ben will be at the age when he needs it but it could extend his playing career by 5 years.

Perspective: The end result of this season will be an early exit in the playoffs. The Steelers are good, they are just inconsistent and unhealthy. Who is the clear AFC favorite? The answer depends on whether you like brown bumpy warts on your toad or smooth green ones. Let’s just assume that the Steelers are done as are the Texans (largely for the same reasons). The Broncos have crested and the Raiders are undisciplined. The Patriots lack a serious defense so that leaves our beloved Raven brethren. Perhaps this is Joe Flacco’s year.
It hardly matters because the AFC is entering into its period of sucking compared to the NFC. The power is shifting back.

Not sure how you came to the conclusion that the 5th seed plays in Houston and 3rd seed has to play the Ravens again.

In the Wild Card Round, the 5th seed plays at the 4th seed, which means the AFC West Champion is host (likely the Rocky Mountain Tebows) and the 6th seed (it will be either the Jets or Bengals...likely the Jets right now based on tiebreakers) plays at the 3rd seed.

Somewhat humorous yet seems to be lacking in effort compared to previous write ups.

Are you thinking that age or injuries are catching up to Redundant Man ?

Seriously, I enjoyed this edition, as always, from the R-Man.

Too lazy to look it up and not thinking it matters much who the Steelers face. At the end of the tunnel there's still going to be either the Packers or the Saints.
