Music at Heinz Field has John Harbaugh upset

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 10, 2011

Ravens coach John Harbaugh knows the rivalry with the Steelers is tough. But Harbaugh thinks that in one respect, the Steelers crossed the line on Sunday.

Specifically, Harbaugh is upset that the staff at Heinz Field played music designed to hurt Joe Flacco’s feelings.

According to Kevin Van Valkenburg of the Baltimore Sun, the Heinz Field sound system blared Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “What’s Your Name” while contrasting the stats of Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger on the scoreboard, and that was somehow a slap in the face to Flacco. Apparently Harbaugh thinks the reference to “little girl” in the lyrics was supposed to be insulting Flacco, and Harbaugh was angry about it.

If that sounds to you like a weird thing for a coach to get upset about, well, you’re not alone. Flacco was baffled by the whole thing.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Flacco said. “They were playing a song?”

This actually isn’t the first time an NFL head coach has been angered by an opposing team playing music designed to belittle his quarterback. When Joey Harrington led the Dolphins against the Lions on Thanksgiving 2006, Dolphins coach Nick Saban complained about the Lions playing Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” on the Ford Field sound system as a jab at Harrington, who’s a pianist in his spare time.

Flacco and Harrington both got their revenge by winning.

Hey Harbaugh - STFU!

I've never seen a coach cry so much...what a wuss! I hope we meet them again in the playoffs...it's on hooker boy!

Next time, play the Sesame Street theme song while the Heinz Field jumbotron shows game replays with Bert's head superimposed on Flacco's body. Let's see how Harbaugh responds to that one.

John Harbaugh needs to just STFU.

Maybe it runs in the family.

He challenges a play where his murdering MLB delivered a clearly illegal shot to Hines Ward, knowing full well that the ball only came out because of his player's cheap shot, and yet he cries about this. :loser

FWIW.....and I dislike Harbaugh as much as the next guy.......

Nowhere in this article is there a quote from him. Considering that we see this kind of BS journalism all the time, I would like to hear him complain about it before actually calling him a whiner.

Did the Heinz Field DJ Intentionally Call Joe Flacco “Little Girl?”

According to several reports, as the Ravens were getting ready to take the field for what would ultimately end up being the game-winning touchdown drive, the scoreboards at Heinz field flashed side-by-side pictures of Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger, along with their stats through the game’s first 57-plus minutes.

No harm there. Ben had, indeed, outplayed his Baltimore rival to that point in bringing his team back from a 10-point deficit to take a 20-16 fourth quarter lead.

However, it was the choice of accompanying music that has people questioning whether or not the Steelers delivered a bit of a low blow to Joe.

Typically, before a big defensive stand, the song blaring through the loudspeakers at Heinz Field is “Renegade” by the band Styx.

A good song to be sure, but I honestly can’t understand how it pumps up a defense or a crowd. Whatever, the Pittsburgh defense is no joke so it obviously works for them.

Maybe they should have stuck with their go-to, instead of (possibly) trying to insult Flacco and the Ravens by playing “What’s Your Name” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, which includes the wink/nudge lyric “What’s your name, little girl, what’s your name?”

According to Kevin Van Valkenburg of the Baltimore Sun, John Harbaugh was none too happy about the choice of music:

It’s funny, but right before the final drive, the Steelers scoreboard flashed Ben Roethlisberger’s stats next to Flacco’s, and the PA started blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “What’s Your Name.” The stadium roared. John Harbaugh, of all people, was livid about this. (The Ravens coach was so fired up in the locker room after the victory, he actually pulled me aside to explain this, unprompted.) Harbaugh said he thought the lyrics — namely, “Hey, little girl” — were intended to be a shot at his quarterback’s manhood, and that made his blood boil. That’s part of the reason he was so fired up when Flacco engineered the game-winning drive, so much so that he cut his chin jumping up and down and celebrating with players.

Joe, as always, was oblivious to anything going on outside of his (no) huddle.

Since Harbaugh was so juiced up about the way he felt Flacco had been disrespected, I asked Flacco whether he had any recollection of hearing the Skynyrd song or felt similar to the way his coach did.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he said, with a look of genuine confusion on his face. “They were playing a song?”

Who knows if there is any merit to this allegation or not? If any of you were at the game, please chime in. Did you feel like the song was a slap in the face to Joe?

Even if it was…meh. If questioning an opposing players manhood is what makes those Yinzers feel better about themselves, it says much more about them than it does about Joe. Who’s the girl now, Heinz Field DJ? The quarterback that has engineered final-minute game-winning drives in your house the past two seasons?

Now that I think about it, maybe “What’s your name, little girl?” isn’t the best thing to be playing with a picture of Ben Roethlisberger on the scoreboard anyway, hmmmm?

Sounds like something he’d say to a chick at a bar before dragging her into a bathroom.

I just had to sit through an online class for coaching youth basketball. One part of the class dealt with sportsmanship. The special guest speaker was John Harbaugh. I about barfed on my computer. I have never heard him say anything in defeat or victory that didn't sound like an excuse or a hollow compliment. And he is constantly making faces and gestures like the refs just stole his wife.

Maybe we'll stick with the Skynyrd theme next time and go with "That Smell" instead.

Maybe next time, they should go with this.

I pray they put up scenes of Bert and Ernie next time we play the Ravens at Heinz Field.

SERIOUSLY?!? Are we to believe that the Ravens have NEVER played anything somewhat derogatory toward the Steelers at their stadium!

What more can this crybaby whine about? I can only guess it runs in the family because Jim's been called out for already too...

"I’m not saying Harbaugh hasn’t done a great job, because he has. But he seems to protest more than those demonstrating in Occupy Wall Street...After watching this game, here’s some advice for young Mr. Harbaugh: We’re only halfway through the season — take some deep breaths and enjoy the ride." - Mike Pereira, Fox Sports

Both Harbaughs are such whiners. It's so annoying.

It was interesting when John had his dad and brother Jim on the bench. John was screaming at the officials and Jim was right beside him screaming too.

Amazed that the League did not take action on that.
