Gerry Dulac's NFL Forecast: Week 9

Thursday, November 03, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pigskin picks from the PG's gridiron guru ...

Last week: 11-2 (.846)

Season record: 82-34 (.707)

Baltimore Ravens (5-2) at Steelers (6-2), 8:20 p.m., Sunday

The Skinny: In his past four games, Joe Flacco has looked nothing like the quarterback who helped beat the Steelers by 28 points in the opener. In the past four games, Ben Roethlisberger and the offense have looked nothing like the unit that produced just one TD in Baltimore.

Prediction: Steelers, 24-14

Who I like, Baltimore version II

Going into their Week 1 loss at Baltimore, the Steelers had a 6-0 record against the Ravens when Ben Roethlisberger was their starting quarterback.

The Ravens forced seven turnovers in that game, including five by Roethlisberger, whipping the Steelers, 35-7.

Since then, the Steelers have turned the ball over six times, including just twice in their current four-game winning streak.

As for the Ravens, they've looked like garbage in six of the past eight quarters they've played - at least offensively.

A big reason for that is the regression of Joe Flacco.

Flacco's 75.4 passer rating and 53.8 completion percentage have him keeping company with the likes of Curtis Painter, Matt Moore and Blaine Gabbert.

Imagine what those numbers would be if he hadn't checked down 33 times to running back Ray Rice.

Rice will be tough for the Steelers to handle, but without Lee Evans in this game, Ike Taylor, who followed Evans all over the field the first time these two teams met, will likely match up one-on-one against Anquan Boldin.

That's going to make life just a little more difficult for Flacco, who has led the Ravens to one win in three road games - that one win being at St. Louis.

Take Pittsburgh to win, 20-16

Player of the Game: Mike Wallace

Games don't get any more in-your-face or hard hitting than a Ravens-Steelers grudge match. And this game lives up to the black and blue billing, as the hit sticks were out in full force for all four quarters until Ben Roethlisberger found Mike Wallace in the end zone on the last play of the game to give the Steelers the come-from-behind 17-16 win. Amazing finish!

Mr Bill says:
Steelers 24
Ravens 17

Mr Bill never picks against the Steelers now. He is afraid of James Harrison. He is not so afraid of T-sizzle, unless it has to do with a Sizzlin' or a Denny's.

Baltimore will put up a good fight but I see the defense producing some TO's this game and it will make the game a lot easier on the offense. BB will have another good game and the Rats will have a tough time handling all the speed on the outside for the Steelers!!!

I'm a little puzzled by this analysis. You could be right, but aren't two of our three biggest defensive playmakers out this week? Does that just not matter? :?: :?

Just because Woodley and Farrior are out doesn't mean there isn't talent on the field and Flacco always plays terrible at Heinz. I just got the feeling the team will play like they want it more than Baltimore tomorrow. Who knows maybe some of the kids that don't get a chance to play will step up and grab the opportunity.

It doesn’t matter who the Steelers start at linebacker this week – they could start Justin Bieber – the Ravens are in for an ugly whuppin’. Steelers by 20.

My father-in-law is from Baltimore (though I did turn his daughter into a crazed Steeler fan - Ha!) and called last night to give me crap about the game this evening. He truly believes that the Ravens are going to destroy the Steelers again. I hope that the entire Ravens team is hitting that same pipe and patting themselves on the back like he is. If it steams the Steelers like it does me, the Ravens are in for a major whooping tonight.

The Steelers are 6-0 when I don't make a prediction. Gotta keep the good times rolling!

No Woodley = very little pressure on Flacco.
