just received a text from Steelers Digest: (kinda disappointed Ivy was released)

Steelers release RB Tristan Davis & LB Mortty Ivy from their Practice Squad to make room for S Cromartie-Smith & DT Elijah Joseph.

Cromartie-Smith was likely re-signed in case Troy Polamalu experiences concussion symptons again while Elisha Joseph is an UDFA DT who spent the pre-season with the Green Bay Packers and started all 12 games at NT for Temple as a senior.

NFLDraftScout report on Elisha Joseph:

Chris Hoke, who has started the past two games at nose tackle, is still experiencing weakness in his shoulder after sustaining a stinger in the Steelers' 17-13 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday.

"His practice and participation is in question," Tomlin said.

If Hampton and Hoke are unable to play against the Cardinals, second-year man Steve McLendon would like make his first career start.

Did anyone sign the kid that we had here in camp? Forget his name, but I know a lot of people were surprised when he got cut.

On early downs, we'll use Hood-McLendon-Keisel as the 3 man line in our 3-4 front. Heywood should get plenty of opportunities to rotate in. If Hampton, Smith, and Hoke are all out, then I'd imagine they'd also consider activating Corbin Bryant from the practice squad.

On passing downs, in the nickle and dime defenses, using a 4-man DL, I'd imagine that we'd give McLendon a bit of a rest and we'd start with something like Woodley-Hood-Heyward-Keisel.

Practice Squad Moves

The Steelers made a series of practice squad moves today as they released running back Tristan Davis and linebacker Mortty Ivy. To replace the two players the Steelers signed saftey Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith and defensive lineman Elisha Joseph.

Tristan Davis, a second year running back out of Auburn was signed to the practice squad on October 5th after being released by the New Orleans Saints. Morrty Ivy is a second year linebacker out of West Virginia. He spent the offseason with the Steelers and was signed to the practice squad after the final roster cuts. Neither player dressed a single game for the Steelers.

Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith was signed as an undrafted free agent out of UTEP in 2010. Cromartie-Smith was a member of the Steelers practice squad until October 5th 2011, when the Steelers released him to make room for Chris Scott after Max Starks took his spot on the active roster.

Elisha Joseph is the new name in all of these transactions. Elisha Joseph, standing 6'2 290 lbs played multiple spots on the defensive line for the Temple Owls from 2007 to 2010. He recorded 95 tackles, 43 of those solo and 6.5 for a loss. Joesph also recorded one sack and two deflected passes in his collegiate career. He spent the off season with the Green Bay Packers before being cut the final day of cuts.

The Steelers practice squad now looks something like this:

Corbin Bryant- DE; Elisha Joesph- DL; John Clay- RB; Tyler Grisham- WR; Jamie McCoy- TE; Da'Mon Cromarite-Smith- S; Trevis Turner- OT; Chris Scott- OG/OT

I remember seeing Joseph tape when I watch Wilkerson. This signing doesn't look like anything now but if he stays in the system and adds some bulk/strength in the lower body...In a year or two...We could all be saying "Nice pick-up!" I think he is best suited at NT and could be some coaching and physical training away from being a productive player at this level. He doesn't lack any upper body strength but be found out he can't throw around OL at this level. I will be intrigued to watch his development.

I like the Joseph signing.

Let's face it, GB has done pretty well in recent years in developing young talent. Joseph was a last day cut so he did hang around awhile in GB.

I'm glad to see Mortty Ivy being re-signed to the practice squad, he really impressed in pre-season.

Since Corbin Bryant was signed to the 53, ILB Mortty Ivy was brought back to the practice squad.

Yep, it worked out okay for the Packers. This may be just what the Steelers need, show the coaching staff and front office that some young guys are ready to take over and play at a high level. Maybe then they will be willing to part with some big money veterans.
