Steelers Report Card: Game 3 vs. Colts

Monday, September 26, 2011

QUARTERBACKS B-

It was just the kind of game Ben Roethlisberger and the offense needed, at least in the first quarter. He completed 8 of 12 passes for a personal-best 171 yards in the first quarter alone, including an 81-yard TD to Mike Wallace. But he had three turnovers -- two fumbles and one interception -- in the second quarter that led to all 13 points by the Colts. Roethlisberger finished with 364 yards passing.

RUNNING BACKS C-

The running game continued to sputter, only this time it happened in the first half when Rashard Mendenhall had almost as many runs for zero or minus yards (4) as he did positive yards (5). He had only 11 yards on nine carries in the first half and finished with 37 yards on 18 carries, horrible totals against one of the worst rush defenses in the league. Thank goodness for Mewelde Moore on the final drive.

WIDE RECEIVERS B

Wallace's 81-yard TD was the quick strike the Steelers needed early. Wallace had his sixth consecutive 100-yard receiving game by the first quarter and finished with 144 yards. A big third-down drop by Emmanuel Sanders on the first series forced the offense to settle for a field goal. And he made another bad mistake when he failed to touch down safety Joe Lefeged after an interception.

OFFENSIVE LINE F

It was a long night for LT Jonathan Scott, especially when he got beaten badly by DE Dwight Freeney on the play Roethlisberger's fumble was returned for a touchdown -- tying the game at a point when the Steelers were dominating. The Steelers managed just 10 yards on 10 carries in the first half against a defense that was allowing 136.5 yards per game.

DEFENSIVE LINE B-

The Steelers continue to have problems defending the stretch play because it creates gaps in their defense. And RB Joseph Addai took advantage all game, with 39 yards on 8 carries and finishing with 86 yards on 17 carries. All in all, though, the defense was solid against the Colts until the final drive. They were put in bad positions by three Roethlisberger turnovers.

LINEBACKERS B

James Harrison delivered what the unit has been lacking for several games -- big, game-changing plays. His strip-sack on Curtis Painter resulted in Troy Polamalu's 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown. It was the first takeaway by the defense this season. But, when they needed a defensive stop, the Colts drove 80 yards on 10 plays to score their only offensive touchdown.

DEFENSIVE BACKS B

It was difficult to tell if the Steelers secondary coverage was that good or Kerry Collins was that bad. He was just 10 of 20 for 78 yards in the first half and 3 of 9 for 15 yards in the second half before he was injured. Still, give credit to CBs William Gay and Keenan Lewis for keeping the ball in front of them and S Ryan Clark for several big plays in coverage.

SPECIAL TEAMS B

Shaun Suisham had a 48-yard FG on the opening drive and the 38-yarder with :04 remaining to win the game, though he missed a 36-yarder that hit the upright in the third quarter. The Steelers were not able to take advantage of what had been poor special-teams play by the Colts, who had allowed returns of 79, 52, 46 and 43 yards in the first two games the season.

COACHING C

The Steelers started the way they need to start on the road, throwing the ball and making big plays to quickly take the Colts out of the game. But three first-half turnovers by Roethlisberger let the Colts back in the game and the Steelers spent the rest of the time trying to recover. What should have been an easy victory instead turned into a narrow victory against a team that has been horrid.

Generous grades if you ask me.

Generous grades if you ask me.

I wish my college professors graded on the curve the PG uses.

There's no way in hell you can give our RBs a C-. Even though I do blame the OL for not opening up anything, Mendenhall was outrushed by Mewelde freaking Moore. Pick a hole, Mendy -- you're not auditioning for Dancing with the Stars.

And a B- for a DL that was absolutely manhandled by a scrub OL? Come on.

But the worst grade, IMO, is coaching. Scott looks like a turnstile out there and you don't push a TE over? Ben's got zero time and you don't try to get the ball out fast? Insanity.

We very nearly lost to a team that could be in the race for Andrew Luck. I don't even want to think about the Houston game.

Ben played well all things considered. He made two bad decisions and each cost the Steelers points, so, a B- is probably fair.

RUNNING BACKS C-

The running game continued to sputter, only this time it happened in the first half when Rashard Mendenhall had almost as many runs for zero or minus yards (4) as he did positive yards (5). No bloody way they were a C-, except for the 3 runs in the last drive to make a first down the running backs were pretty bad. D

Too many drops to give this group a B as a whole. Wallace was stellar, the rest were okay. C-

F is being too generous, the offensive line was offensive. XXX

Maybe, but the Colts still had a lot of success running the ball. C

Don't see this one either, Harrison was good, Woodley and Timmons were no-shows and the Foote/Farrior combination isn't working out all that well. C-

Ike was good except for one play, Lewis didn't look ready for prime time, Gay was solid (wow, did I say that out loud?) and Troy took some risks that almost paid off, but didn't. He did defend the fade well in the first half. B-

STs didn't do anything wrong except miss a shortish FG. B is good grade.

COACHING C

But three first-half turnovers by Roethlisberger let the Colts back in the game and the Steelers spent the rest of the time trying to recover. The turnovers can't be placed at the feet of the coaching staff. However, too many other things that make you go Hmmmm happened last night, Troy 30 yards behind the LOS, really? Smith continuing to get reps when he clearly is overmatched. Foote for Farrior, I think saving Farrior for later in the season may cost the Steelers the season, forget the rotation experiment. C-

With Keisel injured and Ziggy starting, I do think that Heyward needs to get some more game snaps...

Smith was pushed around in the 4th quarter...

Running backs? More like Running BACKwards Rashard.

The other 2 RB's made positive contributions and got tough yards when needed. Rashard twinkletoes Mendenhall was pathetic last night. Sure the OL was horrible but this is when you get 3 and go back to the huddle.

This is what I don't get. Mewelde defintely had more success on the final drive. But is it because he was running better than the other backs or were there holes for Mewelde that there weren't for Mendy?

MM showed no hesitation when hitting the line on the final drive.

Mendy is just trying to do too much, much like Ben behind that offensive line. He 100% just needs to hit the holes but he's going for the big gain every time and because of his speed/agility AND I KNOW this may sound crazy. I think he's getting to the line sooner than the other guys and as a result the eventual holes for the other guys are opening up where as they haven't creased enough when Mendy is getting there. He's still dancing too much rather than just smacking the hole.

Smith was also pushed around in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Qs. He is ineffective against the run and pass right now. To the Bench!

Steelers win big in TV ratings too

Monday, September 26, 2011

The last-minute victory by the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Indianapolis Colts gave NBC a national TV ratings touchdown in primetime, even though it was up against the first Sunday of the new TV season.

"Sunday Night Football" averaged a 13.2 overnight household rating/21 share, according to preliminary data released Monday by Nielsen Media Research. The Steelers' 23-20 victory was sealed in the final minute by Shaun Suisham's 38-yard field goal, and that suspense showed up in the ratings with a peak between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. with a 14.4/25.

It was the best overnight rating NBC Sports has received for "Sunday Night Football" in the six years it's had it running up against the first Sunday of a new TV season.
